The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has organized an “Interdisciplinary SciFest 2024” on February 7th, 2024 from under its Subject Association at Ramanujan Block of the university.
The Fest highlighted interdisciplinary research areas like science presentations, quiz competitions, debates, essays and also cultural & fun activities. The overall objectives of the SciFest 2024 were to to provide a vehicle to encourage students to exchange research ideas, and applications and provide an environment where they can learn and enjoy.
The Fest was inaugurated by Prof. Eqbal Hussain, Officiating Vice Chancellor of JMI. As a Chief guest, he appreciated the Centre’s effort in popularizing science among students. He emphasized that the Centre has a key role in the area of research and academics of the University. He believed that the faculty of life sciences shall have a bigger role in days to come.
Professor Rajan Patel, the Director of the Centre, delivered introductory remarks about the SciFest and an overview of the progress of the Centre. More than 200 people from various departments of Jamia participated in the event. The major representation was from Department of Biotechnology, Department of Biosciences, Department of Chemistry, Centre for Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Multidisciplinary Centre for Advance Research and Studies, Department of Fine arts, Department of English, Department of Mathematics, in addition to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences. Folk songs, poetry, food stalls representing delicacies from Kashmir to Kerala, Tug war between students and teachers, were major attractions. The
Centre believes that the best way to spread and popularize science is through fun activities and science festivals.
Prof. Zahid Ashraf, Dean, faculty of Life Sciences, highlighted the unique nature of the Centre where faculties from different disciplines of science, like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Biological Sciences are working on various aspects of life sciences with an interdisciplinary approach. Prof. Seemi Farhat Baseer, Dean, Student’s Welfare, emphasized the importance of the Centre in the ranking of JMI in NIRF.
