Q: Which is better among TOEFL and IELTS?
The "better" test depends on your specific needs and goals. Both TOEFL and IELTS are widely accepted English proficiency tests, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
The TOEFL exam is widely accepted in all the universities present in major study-abroad destinations such as the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The mode of the TOEFL exam is computer-based and it focuses more on the academic English. The exam takes 2 hours to complete in which it assesses all four skills of the test taker namely - speaking, listening, reading and writing.
On the other hand, the IELTS exam covers modeules from both academic English and general training English. However, the IELTS exam format differ entirely from that of the TOEFL exam. The IELTS exam takes a total of 3 hours to get completed in two different sittings. Students have to take the speaking section (11-14 minutes, with a real examiner) of the test up to 7 days either before or after taking the main IELTS exam in which the reading, listening and writing skills are assessed in the time frame of 2 hours and 44 minutes.
The other main points of difference between the IELTS and TOEFL exams are given below. Students can choose the exam that suits them the best based on the following and above-mentioned information.
IELTS Vs TOEFL | ||
---|---|---|
Feature | TOEFL | IELTS |
Format | Computer-based | Computer-based or paper-based |
Focus | Academic English | Academic or general English |
Speaking | Computer-based | Face-to-face with an examiner |

Q: What is PTE Academic Exam pattern?
The pattern of the PTE exam which lasts for two hours is very simple. The PTE exam pattern is designed to assess the English language Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening skills of the test taker in three parts. Since the PTE Academic exam is an integrated skills test, more than one skill gets tested by the medium of each of these 3 parts. The patterns of Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 of the PTE exam are given below:
- Part 1- Speaking & Writing: This section takes around 54–67 minutes to get completed and contains 7 different question types. This part assesses the English speaking and writing skills of the test taker in an academic environment.
- Part 2 - Reading: This section takes around 30 minutes to get completed and assesses the reading and writing skills of the test taker. This section contains 5 different types of questions.
- Part 3 - Listening: Taking around 30 minutes for its completion, the listening part of the test assesses the listening, reading and writing skills of the test takers and contains 8 different question types.
Q: What is the format of the Duolingo English Test?
As mentioned earlier, DET will measure your hold in the domains such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Adaptive Test: The first part, i.e., the Adaptive Test will be of 45 minutes duration and your English skills will be tested with the help of different types of questions which are administered randomly. Also, the difficulty level of these questions will change on the basis of how you’re performing.
Writing and Speaking Samples: The second part is the Writing and Speaking Samples, the duration of which will be 10 minutes. A prompt will be provided and candidates will have to give a good length response to it. For the speaking part, you will be able to record your response for a maximum of three minutes (minimum 1 minute), and for the writing sample, a 3-5 minute long response has to be recorded.
In DET, similar question types won’t be clubbed together and after every question, a different one will appear which the candidate will be unaware of. There will be questions with difficult levels more or less than the previous ones. The probability of getting the same question more than once is highly unlikely irrespective of the number of times you attempt DET.
