Q:   Which is better among TOEFL and IELTS?

A:

The "better" test depends on your specific needs and goals. Both TOEFL and IELTS are widely accepted English proficiency tests, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

The TOEFL exam is widely accepted in all the universities present in major study-abroad destinations such as the USA, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The mode of the TOEFL exam is computer-based and it focuses more on the academic English. The exam takes 2 hours to complete in which it assesses all four skills of the test taker namely - speaking, listening, reading and writing.

On the other hand, the IELTS exam covers modeules from both academic English and general training English. However, the IELTS exam format differ entirely from that of the TOEFL exam. The IELTS exam takes a total of 3 hours to get completed in two different sittings. Students have to take the speaking section (11-14 minutes, with a real examiner) of the test up to 7 days either before or after taking the main IELTS exam in which the reading, listening and writing skills are assessed in the time frame of 2 hours and 44 minutes.

The other main points of difference between the IELTS and TOEFL exams are given below. Students can choose the exam that suits them the best based on the following and above-mentioned information.

IELTS Vs TOEFL
FeatureTOEFLIELTS
FormatComputer-based
Computer-based or paper-based
FocusAcademic English
Academic or general English
SpeakingComputer-based

Scoring0-1200-9

Q:   How can I register for TOEFL exam?

A:

Candidates are required to visit the TOEFL login page and create an online profile. Then they’ll be required to pay the TOEFL exam fee of INR16,900 INR (test takers who register online can choose to pay in Indian Rupees, based on that day’s exchange rate, as calculated in the registration system.). Online registration on the ETS website is the fastest and the easiest method. Through the online method, you can register anytime and on any day. Be sure to spell your name exactly as it appears on the identification you will bring on the test day, which for Indian students should ideally be their Passport. You will be required to pay with a credit/debit card.

Steps to apply for TOEFL Exam:

  • Go to the official website of ETS and create your profile.
  • Fill in all the information like your name, address, email id, etc.
  • Make sure the information you provide is the same as it is on your passport ( Most important, your name must match your ID exactly.)
  • Select your TOEFL test date  and TOEFL test centre
  • Confirm your selection
  • Proceed to pay the application fee
  • Print out your acknowledgement form for future reference

Q:   What is the pattern of the Duolingo English Test?

A:

The Duolingo English Test has two parts. The first one is a 45-minute adaptive test in which series of questions appear that evaluate one's English skills. The other part consists of a 10-minute Writing and Speaking test that has open-ended prompts. These along with one's scores are shared with institutions. The first 5 minutes is an introduction in which the test takers are made familiar with the test rules and requirements. DET is conducted online and is an English proficiency test which analyses one's abilities in the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Q:   How many times is GRE Exam conducted in a year?

A:

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) conducts the GRE General Test throughout the year. Students can choose a test date that suits their schedule. ETS releases monthly test dates for specific exam centres in Indian cities. However, students do have the option to take the GRE at Home test, which allows them to take the exam from the comfort of their own residences.

Note that,  You can only take the GRE General Test once every 21 days and maximum 5 times in a year.
