What is Skip Counting?

Skip counting deals with counting non-1 amounts, such as skip counting by 2, skip counting by 3, skip counting by 5, 10, or 100. It is a method of counting numbers by adding a number to the preceding number each time. For example, skip counting the numbers by 2, we get 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and so on. There are three things you need to remember.

Skip count is possible by any number.

It helps to count the sum easily.
In multiplication tables, skip counting has a massive use.

Skip Counting Forward

Using this concept, you add the same number over and over to skip count.

You can start with any number. If you normally count (like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), add 1 to get the next number. If you want to count by 2s, add 2 to get the following number.

You can skip 1, 2, 3, 5, n numbers.

You can subtract the number over and over to skip count and move backwards.

You can start with any number. If you normally count (like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6), subtract 1 to get the next number. If you want to count by 2s, subtract 2 to get the next number.

As skip counting always returns a sequence of numbers, you might find it useful in the chapter sequence and series. The weightage of this chapter is 5-6 marks.

Illustrated Examples on Skip Counting

1. How to skip count by 10?

Solution. Skip count by 10 gives a multiplication table of 10 if we start counting from 10. Hence we get:
10
10+10 = 20
20+10 = 30
30+10 = 40
40+10 = 50
50+10 = 60
60+10 = 70
70+10 = 80
80+10 = 90
90+100 = 100

2.Skip counting by 2s, starting from 67. 

Solution. Add 2 to 67 

67 + 2 = 69 

Add 2 to previous number 69 

69 + 2 = 71 

Keep on adding 2 to the previous number we get 67, 69, 71, 73, 75, 77, 79....so on. 

3.Skip counting by 5s, starting from 119. 

Solution. We will start the series by 119. 

Add 5 to 119 

119 + 5 = 124 

Add 5 to previous number 124 

124+5=129 

Keep on adding 5 to the previous number we get 119, 124, 129, 134, 139, 144, 149, and so on.

Q; How can you describe the skip 10 counts?

A: Skip counting by 10s implies adding ten or jumping by 10 to the previous total. Each number is 10 more than the number before. If the 1st number is odd, the next number will be an odd number after adding 10.

A: An individual will count to 10 by skipping counting by two by calling only any other number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. The method is called counting by twos in older textbooks.

Q: Can you count fives?

A: You will count fives by adding the previous count to five. If you began with 0 and counted fives, the numbers you'd count will be: 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100.

A; By 7: 7 + 7 = 14 ; 14 + 7 = 21 ; 21 + 7 =28 ; 28 + 7 = 35 ; 35 + 7 = 42 and so on. So if the 1st number is 7 then after counting by 7's we will get 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42,... To find the next number by counting by 7's , add 7 to the given number.
