Discontinue (Apr 2022) - B.Tech + M.Tech in Optical Engineering - Batch of 2026

Absolutely satisfied and happy.
Placements: 100 percent placement till now due to ISRO. Around an 8 LPA package. Till now, only ISRO is the major recruiter. Everyone got internships, mainly in ISRO centers or IIST itself. Roles include optical engineer and various other roles such as system designer, tester, and laser technician.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi, classrooms, and library are all good and present and are really at the top. The library is state of the art, only needing some power backup. Hostel quality is good but very far from the city. The mess food is good and can’t be complained about. They also keep changing the menu regularly.
Faculty: Yes, all teachers are good and qualified. They teach well and concentrate more on understanding than marks. Yes, the course helps in making students industry-ready and helps us learn the standard software. Semester exams are challenging enough, with around a 90 percent pass percentage.
Other: Very good college. Teaches how to live, not only academics.

IIST - Unique or just another IIT?
Placements: One of the main reasons students select this college, other than research, is ISRO placements. Every year, more than 60% of students in the whole batch get placed in ISRO if they meet the requirement of a 7.5 CGPA till the 8th semester. The ISRO interview is generally taken during the 6th semester, in which students must have a CGPA of 7 on a scale of 10. Other than ISRO, other core and non-core companies also visit.
Infrastructure: Since the college started in 2007, hostels have been pretty new and always clean. Since it's not a very populated college, you will always find it calm and peaceful here. In the first year, one has to share a room with 2 other batchmates, which turns into 2 people per room from the 2nd year onwards.
Faculty: Faculty members are good, except for some. They are well-qualified and often explain the subjects well. The curriculum is not difficult but not easy either. You will be grinded for the whole semester with assignments, quizzes, labs, and practicals. Now, quizzes have changed to mid-sems, but still, it's not that easy. Exams are of moderate level, and it's relatively graded.
Other: The only reason I chose this course was because of Aerospace and ISRO.

Learning and enduring platform.
Placements: The recruitment drive is not that strong, and mostly off-campus students get placed. The highest package offered was 10 lakhs per annum, and the lowest was 3 lakhs. However, there are good internship opportunities related to projects that students get, and generally research-related roles are offered.
Infrastructure: The department is huge. We have various types of labs for experiments and research. We have a library and the hostel also provides us with basic amenities. The medical care and help are also available. The food is hygienic and taste may depend upon individual choices.
Faculty: Specialization options are provided to students and accordingly, the curriculum focuses on building the chosen area knowledge in depth. There are various seminars and webinars conducted to help us get industry exposure. The exams are a bit difficult.

A good institute for study and research.
Placements: You can get placed directly in the ISRO organization in IIST after completing your course. Criteria required by ISRO organization to recruit the IIST students. 1. You have to attain a CGPA greater than 7.5 at the end of your course. 2. Maintain the proper discipline throughout the college year; you are going to be placed in a country space organization at the end of your college life, so for that you have to make yourself better to that extent. Information regarding placement. 1. There are 75 seats in our batch (aerospace); from the seniors and the data I got, more than 40 students were able to get the ISRO job by the ISRO organization. 2. For ECE and engineering students, the number is about the same extent. 3. Companies that were visited in previous years other than ISRO: Agnikul Cosmos, TATA Consultancy Service, TATA Elxsi, Artificial Brain, Mercedes Benz, Infosys, and many more. About the package offered: 1. The highest salary package offered last year in the aerospace course is around 13 LPA, and for ECE, the number is around 23 LPA. 2. Median is around 10.5 LPA.
Infrastructure: 1. The infrastructure is really good; the college was set up in 2007, so you can imagine how new the department buildings are: 2. Personally, I am amazed after seeing the lab facilities in IIST. There are more than 30 labs in IIST that are well-functioning. You will find one or two Ph.D. students working in the labs always. (for example, we have a space lab in our college. I personally visited that lab and did some work also. 3. Talking about other facilities, classrooms are very nice (having AC and a digital projector along with a big blackboard). Sitting chairs in classrooms are very comfortable. 4. The library is good; you will get the option to issue the books also (min. 6 in a month). One thing that I don't like is the losing and opening time of the library; actually, it is 8:15 am to 9:00 pm, and I always thought, why is it not 24/7 like one can get the mood of study anytime, right (and I am not joking; I am serious; don't laugh). 5. Wi-Fi is very good throughout the campus with a decent speed. 6. Talking about the hostel room, it is well painted, has three beds, and has three almirahs along with a table and chair. So, rooms are really good. 7. Mess food is okay; personally, I'm from the northern part of India. So, I have the taste problem. It does not mean it is not good; you will get the variety and also the quality.
Faculty: Teachers are really good, well knowledgeable, and qualified. Apart from the professors, there are two assistant teachers in every subject. So, one can get help from the TAs also about the academic problem. You will get the tutorial from time to time, not in every subject, but, yeah, in core subjects you will get it. Talking about the semester exams, it is not that difficult; one can easily get a good CGPA after focusing in the class and giving two hours daily to study. The problem one can face is in core subjects. You have to do hard work to get a good CGPA.
Other: I choose this course because I am interested in space science and wanted to work in ISRO. About the campus life, I will say it is a little bit boring, although we have different fests, such as Conscientia, Dhanak, and events like Konchords Night, but still the social life is boring. The reason I can say it is a research organization is that the institution focuses on the research and study.

Our college is good for students who have an interest in space science.
Placements: The highest salary package offered in the avionics course in 2024 is 23 LPA. The highest salary package offered in the aerospace course is 13 LPA. The average salary package offered in the avionics course is 13 LPA. The average salary package offered in the aerospace course is around 6 LPA - 8 LPA. I don't know much about engineering and physics. I don't think it has much scope from here. If students are coming here, come only for knowledge, not to seek jobs.
Infrastructure: If students want to work in labs, this place is a heaven. Hostels aren't top-notch but they are better than NITs. Wi-Fi has restrictions for games and some websites like other institutes. The mess is not good. It does not provide good food like other colleges.
Faculty: Professors are very helpful. If students are enthusiastic about knowledge, this is the best institution. The curriculum is very difficult. Exams are difficult. Most of the work is lab-based so students can get industry-ready. The only bad thing here is the attendance. The attendance percentage is 80%.

It is a good college in terms of education.
Placements: About 80% of students got placed in the last year's batch. A few students choose to study further. The main recruiter is ISRO, so there are no highest package criteria. Along with ISRO, there are a few other companies like Skyroot and Agnikul Cosmos. Everyone got internship offers in ISRO and a few other companies and institutions.
Infrastructure: Apart from sports facilities, all facilities are available like labs, classrooms, a library, etc. The hostel facilities are good. The quality of the food is good. The taste is not good. I don't know what the staff says. It's South Indian food. I am a South Indian but I don't like the food. Medical facilities are good. There is only one small canteen in the entire campus. It is open only from 8 AM - 11 PM. It is difficult to find a canteen facility during exam time, so we need a night canteen.
Faculty: Teachers are well qualified and exams conducted by them also little challenging.Frome 2024 they made few changes is curriculum..they kept few credits for extra curricular activities it's good thing for future students.academics wise no complaint. IIST Is mainly focused on academics so study wise no problem
Other: Since my childhood, I wanted to be a scientist, so I chose this course. The easiest way to join ISRO is IIST, so I opted for this college. Sports facilities are good. The crowd in our college is very small. Due to less crowd, a few problems arise during college fests and events. Our college is far from the city. We have to depend on KSRTC. The connectivity is the main issue. Extracurricular activities are not supported by our college management. I am from a dance club IIST. There is no support from the management. We ask for permission for everything that we require.
