SRM Doctors Battle A Rare Tumor To Restore Normal Life For A Humble MTC Driver

November 20, 2022: Mahadevan (name changed) has been able to return to normal life thanks to a great effort by a group of doctors from SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur near Chennai. Mahadevan, a driver for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), underwent surgery lately, lasting ten hours. A rare throat tumour called a hamartoma was removed, allowing Mahadevan to return to his usual life.

In a kind gesture, the procedure to remove the unusual tumour was provided without charge. According to Col. Dr A Ravikumar, who led the medical team who operated on Mahadevan, hamartoma is a rare type of tumour, with just 25 to 30 examples known globally. According to Dr A. Ravikumar, the patient, a Kundrathur resident, started to notice a change in his voice and breathing pattern all of a sudden.

“My voice changed from how it had previously spoken, which had been unclear.” The patient reported that their breathing had become loud. He went to the Teynampet and Ambattur health centres, but nothing happened.

According to Mahadevan, the patient sought conventional medication (Ayurveda) in the hopes of improving his health, but the intended outcome was not attained. "At that point, I went to the SRM Hospital in Kattankulathur, close to Chennai."

According to Dr Professor Selva Rajan, the tumour was in the trachea, or windpipe, and measured 2 cm in size. He emphasised that the operation was difficult and that the tumour was in the area of the neck where the windpipe passes.

The difficulties were far from finished; it was difficult to get to the tumour, and a sample was required to determine whether it was cancerous or not. For the purpose of measuring the tumor's size, an endoscope was inserted. The treatment started as soon as we discovered the tumour wasn't malignant, according to Dr. Selva Rajan.

We had to take extreme care to ensure that the food pipe was not harmed because the trachea where the tumour was placed was close to it. Food pipes are delicate, and any kind of breach can cause them harm. The patient's windpipe was carefully removed during surgery, and it was then reattached.

Medical Saga At SRM- Rare Nasal Tumour Removed From 4-Year-Old Girl Child In Two Precision Surgeries

August 19, 2021: A rare nasal tumour in a four-year-old girl child, which had blocked both nasal passages and was threateningly extending into her left eye, was miraculously removed in two well-spaced precision surgeries at the SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Kattankulathur, near here, in a first-of-its-kind medical feat.

This was a six-month medical saga that began when the female child's parents brought her to the Hospital's ENT Out-Patient Department with complaints of nasal blockage, snoring, left eye protrusion, and excessive tears from the left eye from infancy.

A biopsy performed on the girl when she was 10 months old in another hospital revealed that she had been diagnosed with a rare tumour called Myofibroblastic tumour and had undergone 30 cycles of chemotherapy.

The tumour had grown and obstructed both nasal passageways despite the medication. It had also reached the unfortunate girl's left eye, dislodging it "outwards and downwards."

Expert doctors at SRM conducted more investigations, which found a large tumour in the left nasal cavity that had spread into the left eye, swallowing the left eyeball and displacing it outwards.

On February 5, 2021, a team of doctors led by Prof. Lt. Col. Dr A. Ravikumar, Dr Shivapriya, Dr B. Gayathri, and Dr Radhakrishnan from the Departments of ENT, Anaesthesiology, and Opthalmology at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre performed a very fine procedure on the girl child, in which the tumour was 'debulked' using a nasal endoscope and only a small incision externally

The first procedure was required because the tumour had hardened as a result of the treatment, making dissection harder. After expanding the nasal airway, doctors opted to postpone the second procedure until histological testing of the removed tissue confirmed the diagnosis.

The histological analysis revealed it to be a 'Myofibroblastic tumour,' a very rare type of cancer, especially in children, and especially in the nose. So yet, just 23 such cases have been reported.

The team of specialists then performed the second operation on the girl kid on July 6, 2021, to remove the tumour expansion into her left eye, which was causing pressure and displacing the eye. The surgeons at SRM successfully completed an extremely sensitive treatment.

SRM and Taiwan Collaborates for Smart Pandemic Prevention Technology

March 30, 2021: SRMIST - SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai recently entered into an agreement with National Chung Cheng University (CCU), Taiwan to introduce the Smart Pandemic Prevention Technology. The Taiwan-India Joint Collaboration Effort has been launched in order to mitigate the impact of the ensuing global pandemic problem.

CCU and SRMIST collaborated to develop smart and emerging technology, which resulted in the creation and introduction of the Smart Pandemic Prevention System (SPPS), which involves smart face detection, thermal body temperature control, and real-time social interaction processing.

Automatic body tracking and recording, smart face identification, face mask recognition, and social touch analysis are among the four key features of the Taiwan-India Smart Pandemic Prevention System. Not only did CCU and SRMIST students collaborate on cutting-edge AI technologies, but the system was then implemented on both campuses, providing secure entrance/exit control to both universities' employees. A thermal camera was used to automate body tracking, but students and professors worked to enhance the programme testing accuracy. This cut back on the number of workers expected to monitor body temperatures at each and every entry and exit.

Face recognition uses the most current deep neural network versions, such as MTCNN and MobileFacenet, with Indian face optimizations. The SORT algorithm was used to accomplish face monitoring. On the Nvidia Jetson Nano board, an edge-based version was also produced.

Addressing the students of SRMIST he said, "A few years ago, only people who were born in manufacturing or commercial houses could dream about starting a company because they had the financial condition to do so. He elaborated on the main characteristics of being a successful entrepreneur who is excited about the project, merciless about implementation, capacity to stretch money, appetite for excellence and eager to execute.

In the social process of entrepreneurship, he elaborated on the idea of social entrepreneurs (which is not new to India). "Most companies have practices of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Our Government further emphasises that businesses invest approximately 2 per cent of their annual profits on CSR programmes.

Good infrastructure and very good placements, but placements are only for those who perform well.

Placements: About 800 people are studying my course. The highest salary package is 39 LPA and the lowest salary package is 4.5 LPA. Top companies like Google, Accenture, Amazon, PayPal, and Microsoft recruit from our course. Around 80% of students will get internships. Embedded, software, and hardware roles are very good in my course. Top companies offer higher salary packages, but they hire only a few members.

Only join this college if it is your last resort.

Placements: You do have companies visiting the campus for placements but they barely hire 2-3 students from a pool of over 4000 applicants. We had companies like PayPal, Dell, Barclays, jp Morgan, Philips and Siemens that came to recruit interns but they barely hired 5 interns out of which 50% were girls. It’s almost impossible to get past the initial resume screening, most people are rejected even before they write a test. So unless your resume is truly exceptional, getting an internship is close to imposs...

Good college, with ample opportunities to enrich skills. Placements are good.

Placements: Around 85% of students got placed from SRMIST. I got to know from seniors and college faculty members, that the average salary package offered is 8 LPA. There are both product-based companies and mass recruiters at our college, offering many opportunities. Placements depend on how well you develop your skills. The highest salary package offered is 50 LPA. There are internship opportunities if you join a club. Last year, Microsoft visited campus and around 2 students got their chance.

Life of a girl in SRMIST.

Placements: My course is B.Tech CSE with a specialization in Data Analysis. There are around 200 students in my course. The highest salary package offered is 15 LPA, and there is no information regarding the lowest salary package. However, our course is great if one is opting for higher studies.

The worst college for subjects and placements. I don't recommend you to join this college.

Placements: A very few students were placed in my course due to lack of knowledge regarding the subjects, this is all because of the faculty. We have raised complaints against them but the management doesn't care about it. If any one is interested to join this college only for placements, it’s better to choose another course in this college because this course is not the correct one to choose for getting placed. Some companies used to come here to hire us but that was a waste of time as they conducted inter...
