UPES Student Holds The Distinction Of Being Youngest Google Open-Source Mentor

January 10, 2022: Jaskirat has always been a researcher with a passion for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Robotic Automation. His technical brilliance got him a full scholarship at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies [UPES] in 2020 to study an integrated BTech in Computer Science and Engineering.

At the age of 14, Jaskirat's failure in the Google Code-In contest (GCI) encouraged him to jump right into free open-source software learning platforms like Sugar Labs' Turtle Block. He spent a year learning, contributing, and developing the skills that enabled him to join Sugar Labs' open-source community development and outreach team.

In 2016, he also launched Codeuino, a "volunteer-driven non-profit open-source social networking organisation that aspires to transform the way other communities utilise and produce open-source social-environment tools to better line with end-user expectations," according to him.

Walter Bender, the creator of Sugar Labs, invited him to serve as a GCI mentor in 2017. Jaskirat, never one to pass up an opportunity, jumped at the chance to engage on a variety of research projects aimed at finding practical solutions to business difficulties.

He got the chance to mentor pre-university students in open source here, which aroused his interest even further.

Jaskirat obtained a fully-sponsored invite to Google Summer of Code (GSoC) and Google Mentor Summit in Sunnyvale, California, a year later, and had quickly risen to the position of youngest mentor at Google open-source programmes.

"My path from losing at a Google Code-In contest to becoming the youngest mentor at Google open-source initiatives has been fantastic," he says of his tough climb to the top. “I've learned a lot from industry professionals, and I'm excited to keep contributing and developing outstanding technologies around the world."

He is a Research Intern at IIIT-Delhi and has participated in UPES research. He also mentors students through Google Summer of Code, Google Code-In, Google Season of Docs, Rails Girls Summer of Code, Major League Hacking, and The Linux Foundation's Community Bridge Mentorship program.

UPES Invites Founder And Host Of Popular Channel ‘The Deshbhakt’ To Deliver A Power Talk

September 14, 2021: UPES invites business leaders to share their experiences and useful ideas with students as part of its comprehensive Pre-Semester Learning Sessions. Akash Banerjee, a famous journalist and humorist, spoke at one of the UPES School of Modern Media's courses. Professor Nalin Mehta, the school's dean, mediated the discussion.

Banerjee talked about the difference between satire and stand-up explaining “Stand-up comedy is where you go to laugh, perform caricatures, and then go home. In India, satire is a relatively new genre. This isn't a comedy. It discusses data, facts, and current events. It makes fun of people in positions of power and usually has a deeper message expressed with comedy and sarcasm.”

He also talked about the genesis of ‘The DeshBhakt’, “Because Indian law prohibits commercial FM radio from broadcasting news, the convergence of important news with the frivolous and irreverent occurred when I was working in radio. That's where my satirical passion began. With ‘The DeshBhakt,' I hope to move this genre forward by demonstrating that it is acceptable to mock politicians.”

There were other questions too regarding how does he produce videos and deal with the criticism that comes his way to which he simply answered, “If you are swayed by criticism, you are in the wrong sector, for the kids who are listening. If criticism affects you and you want to be a journalist or do anything else that involves interacting with the public, you're done. People will discover something wrong with a two-day-old infant or a kitten.”

UPES Student Wields Technology to Design Interactive Plants

February 24, 2020: Prateek Vishwakarma, a student of MDesign specialising in Industrial Designing at UPES - University of Petroleum and Energy Studies recently developed a project Trixie, a technology that aims to build a relatively new kind of interaction with plants.

Talking about the motivation behind the invention, he says, “As a child, I remember paying a visit to my uncle’s house during vacations and spending time in nature. My uncle was immensely fond of plants and liked to keep various varieties in his farm. Any time I met him, I would watch how he managed his lovely garden. He will still search for fresh roots, seeds, and buds. Gradually, I have developed an interest in plants. My uncle showed me how to cultivate a plant from seed, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

The project that uses Tangible User Interface (TUI) is a clear example of how we can easily use technology to help us communicate with plants in unusual ways.

The idea was inspired by ‘Botanicus Interacticus’, the work of Ivan Poupyrev and his team at Disney Research. The view of the world where digital technologies are not created but are living, growing species inspired students to collaborate in this domain towards a healthy, biological future where expressions are not limited to humans and animals but are applied to plants as well.

The plant ‘Trixie’ can be used as an extension for functional uses in day-to-day lives with the incorporation of three basic features:

  • Trixie responds by shaking whenever one greets it by calling out ‘Hi Trixie’.
  • Trixie monitors the real-time moisture content of the soil and gives reminders to pour water by blinking LED lights whenever the moisture level of the soil drops below a certain specified level.
  • By simply touching Trixie, one can turn on the LED lamp and Trixie will turn itself into a lamp.

Absolutely satisfied with the faculty members and campus area.

Placements: Yes, there are a considerable number of students being placed at the university. However, the packages the students receive are not what they expect at the time of joining the law school. Recruiters like JSA, LKS, and Khaitan, etc., conduct interviews from the 9th semester onward.

A lot of people view our university as one we see in movies, and somewhere that's true.

Placements: Less than 50% of the students get placed. Students mostly lack basics about the subject. Though teachers prepare you well for the interview, students tend to mess up. As a student, you cannot solely rely on campus placements only. You need to have a backup plan as well.

Not worth it as the fees is high.

Placements: Around 60% of students secured internships, primarily with leading tech companies and startups like Tech Mahindra, Capgemini, and Cognizant. The average package range was between 6-8 LPA. Common roles included Software Engineer, Data Analyst, and Cloud Engineering.

Overall it was fine but not what I expected from this college.

Placements: They have been promising us to provide 100 % placements since the beginning but the package is very low. Top recruiting companies are not so known. Only 10 from 100 students do get good placements. And not so many global opportunities are being provided.
