Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) is a two-year graduate degree program that enables students to become school teachers in India. Earlier, only graduates were eligible for this course. However, after looking at the increasing demand for the teaching profession, the Ministry of Human Resources turned B.Ed into an integrated course. This integrated course can be taken after 10+2 education. You can thus become a graduate and B.Ed-qualified professional in just 4 years. Otherwise, going by the traditional route, you would need 3 years to graduate and 2 years to complete the B.Ed course.

According to the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE), professionals aiming to teach in primary and secondary schools must have a B.Ed degree, allowing them to teach science and arts from a teacher’s perspective.

Syllabus – Important Facts for B.Ed

B.Ed is a four-semester course: In the four-semester-long course, you get to learn about subjects such as Learning Resource Project, Childhood and Growing Up, Creating an Inclusive School, and Current Affairs, among others.

Typically, B.Ed is a two-year-long program: Commonly, B.Ed is studied as a two-year program after graduation. Admission to colleges for this program is based on merit or the entrance test scores. For joining Navodaya Vidyalayas or Kendriya Vidyalayas, you must appear for the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

The syllabus remains almost similar throughout India: The syllabus for the two-year professional B.Ed courses remain almost similar throughout the country with some variations. It focuses on Perspectives in Education, Pedagogic Studies, and Engagement with the Field to provide a comprehensive understanding of the field.

Students are graded for Summative and Formatives: Every semester, you will be graded based on the assignments. Additionally, the end-semester exams will include 70% marks for the summative tests and 30% for the formations.

Although B.Ed is a Bachelor's course, it requires a graduation degree: Entrance to B.Ed courses can either be based on merit (through lists released by every university) or on the candidate’s performance in the entrance examination. In some cases, universities or colleges also conduct a personal interview and group discussion round to further assess the candidate’s potential before granting admission.
