B.Lib.Sc Course Syllabus

Syllabus for Bachelor of Library Science is set by UGC (University Grants Comission). It covers all the important aspects of Library Science. Some of the important topics included in the syllabus are provided below:

Objective

Foundations of Library and Information Science

Librarianship as a profession, Library ethics, User education, Public relation, Extension service, History of libraries, Laws relating to libraries and information centers, Professional associations.

The course is important to set a foundation of library and IT science for students.

Management of Library and Information centres

Essentials of management, Library Management-general aspects, Library authority and library committee, Staffing, Care & preservation of library resources (printed and digital), Financial management in libraries, Resources Mobilization including outsourcing. 

This course teaches a student the methods and ways to manage a library and IT center.

Library and Information Technology (Theory)

Computer technology-History, classification and generation of computers, Programming Languages, Algorithm & Flow Charting, Reprographic technology, Micrographic technologies, Social networking and Library blogs, Concept and need of library automation.

The course tells a student about theoretical aspects of IT and library automation.

Information Users, Systems and Services

 

Information users and their information needs, Specific techniques of user studies– Scenario analysis, Interaction analysis, Delphi method, Repertory grids, Evaluation of user survey, International information systems, Organization of reference section.

Through this concept, scope, content and methodology of user studies is taught to students.

Knowledge Organization and Information Retrieval

Knowledge organization and subject organization, Concept and theory of library classification, Normative principles of library classification, Normative principles of library cataloguing, Subject heading lists and Thesaurus, Concept of Abstract and Abstracting, Keyword Indexing.

Objective of allotting this course is to make students learn the tricks and ways to organize knowledge and subject.

Information Sources

Concept of information sources, Primary sources of information, Secondary sources of information, Tertiary source of information, Human resource, Information centers, Institutional information sources, Mass media, Database.

Through this, different types of information sources are described to a student.
