BMLT is a course studied for over three years. There are six semesters which are instinctively compulsory. There are classes for both practicals and theory in order to furnish an understanding of laboratory techniques.

Detailed Syllabus for BMLT Subjects

The syllabus of BMLT may vary from one university to the other, but the BMLT subjects are more or less the same. Students are introduced to the concepts of Necrosis, Hyperplasia, Hypertrophy, and Atrophy. Besides, they are introduced to inflammation and Neoplasia. Hemodynamics and the process of correlation with laboratory diagnosis are taught as well.

 

Clinical Pathology & Hematology

Hematology

Students are briefly introduced to the concepts of haematopoiesis and related illnesses like Anaemia. Normal and abnormal Hb with special reference to Thalassemia is discussed and causes of leukocytosis and leukopenia along with WBC production is looked upon. Platelets, anticoagulants and bone marrow are studied in more detail. It teaches the students the process to select the correct repertory and how to use it as a tool for making effective and correct conclusions. By using the practices effectively, students will be able to better diagnose clinical cases of complex diseases and would possess an in-depth understanding of medical cases. They will also be able to practically apply the techniques.

 

Practical (Paper-101)

Practical

Estimation of Hb and total count of RBC, WBC and platelet

PCV determination, RBC Indices calculation along with various estimations is done. The students learn to prepare a stain and recognize related cells. Bone marrow smear is taught as well along with iron stain in bone marrow.

 

General and Systematic Bacteriology

Microbiology

History of Microbiology is taught and students are introduced to Microbial Cells, Nutrition, Growth and control of Microorganisms. They learn about Bacterial Genetics and systematic bacteriology. Waste disposal is also researched.

 

Practical (102)

Practical

Microscopy and Microbial media is researched. Methods of inoculation and Staining Techniques are studied for observation of morphology and isolation and Identification of common Pathogenic bacteria and Serological tests.

 

Biochemistry

Biochemistry

Knowledge of general chemistry and lab organisation along with common laboratory hazards is studied while various laboratory equipment are introduced. Metabolism of various nutrients is taught along with Ketogenic metabolism. Enzymology and roles of vitamins and fats is studied.

 

Practical (103)

Practical

Phlebotomy, Preparation of Solutions and Qualitative analysis are thoroughly taught. Validation of Lambert’s Beer’s law and principles and operations colourimeter and Spectrophotometer is importantly introduced.

 

 

Anatomy and physiology

Anatomy and physiology

Basics and advanced introduction to anatomy and physiology is given along with the acclaimed laboratory techniques. After the completion of this subject, the student should be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and applied anatomy. They should also be able to describe the physiological functions of various systems accordingly. They should be able to define various medical terms.

 

PRACTICAL (Paper-104A)

 

Demonstration of Major organs, determination of Blood pressure, body density and fat percentage are included in the practical curriculum. Measurement of respiratory rate is also done.

Histopathology and Cytology

 

 

Cytology

Introduction to histopathological techniques and related laboratory experience is taught. Experiments in Cytopathology are to be done alongside Liquid Based Cytology.

Students will be able to understand the consequences of practising medicine as a profession. In addition to this, they will be able to point out the basic symptoms of toxicology and poisoning. The study of forensic medicine would be introduced; forensic medicine is generally used in the investigation of a crime and establishing the cases of injury or death. Using this medical knowledge, the students can help many governmental institutions.

Pathology

Preparation of blocks, Section cutting and Stain preparation are introduced. Extensive analysis and CSF examination are also done.

 

 

Medical Parasitology, Mycology & Entomology

 

Parasitology

The basic definitions of Parasitology along with study of important parasites is done. Concepts of Virology and Entomology are introduced in laboratory coursework.

 

MICROBIOLOGY

PRACTICAL (202)

 

 

Stool examination for Ova, Parasite, cyst and examination of Pathogenic parasites along with collection, preparation and identification of haemoparasites is done. Viral diagnosis and related procedures are also done. By the end of the program, the students will also possess a basic knowledge of pathology, microbiology and parasitology. These would help them in the study of chronic diseases and in understanding practical applications. A better understanding of pathogens and learning how infections happen by the end of the program will be clear to the students.

 

 

Biochemistry

 

The workings of hormones, electrolytes, enzymes, protein and other biochemicals in the body are studied. Tests done to maintain healthy biological chemistry are studied.

 

BIOCHEMISTRY

PRACTICAL (PAPER-203)

 

Estimation of Glucose, Urea, Creatinine and Uric acid, Albumin, and Globulin along with Total protein in blood is efficiently done.

5 & 6

Blood Banking & Special haematology

 

Collection and Handling of Blood is mainly dealt with. The principle of Blood grouping, component separation and laboratory aspects of Blood Transfusion is explained. Related disorders are studied and connected with laboratory diagnosis as well.

 

PATHOLOGY

PRACTICAL (PAPER-301)

 

 

Training at blood banks, doing ABO blood grouping and Rh typing along with Coombs test and other procedures is taught. AT, CT, PT, APTT & INR are also included.

 

 

Clinical immunology & Mycobacteriology

 

 

Introduction to the cells and components of the immune system is done. The structure and functions of the related cells are paid special attention to in this subject.

Techniques of Mycobacteriology are studied in a laboratory setting.

 

(MICROBIOLOGY)

PRACTICAL (302)

 

 

Mantouxtes, ELISA test, VDRL/ RPR Test along with other procedures are to be done in this practical. Immuno chromatographic devices are introduced along with procedures to prepare the LJ medium. Drawing of blood from animals is done as well.

 

 

Biochemistry

 

Separation & Identification of Techniques, Instrumentation and biochemical techniques and Principles of Isolation of human DNA & RNA are paid attention to. Various Biomarkers, Enzymes and isoenzymes of clinical importance are studied as well.

 

BIOCHEMISTRY

PRACTICAL (PAPER-303)

 

Using the ELISA technique for the assay of T3/T4/TSH/LH/FSH/Insulin/Glucagon/ Estrogens/ Progesterone/Prolactin hormones/ SGOT/SGPT in blood and estimation of Amylase, Lipase, Creatinine kinase, LDH is to be explained. The students will be able to effectively diagnose any surgical diseases. In such surgical cases, the students will be able to use the principles they were taught and apply therapeutics to better understand and solve the problem at hand.

At the end of the program, the students will also be able to diagnose any commonly occurring disease as well as provide lab diagnosis and treatment for the disease. Moreover, the students will be able to properly manage the various healthcare principles and apply the therapeutics for treating the patients.

In the programme, students will be taught to be well versed in one-sided diseases. This will test their skill of management and make them able to treat any such diseases with ease. Thus, these students will be able to master the skill of management.

At the end of the program, the students are expected to possess diagnostic and treatment knowledge and how to practically apply the techniques in real-life situations. The student should be able to replicate laboratory practices in actual real-life situations by this time.

BLMT Syllabus for Distance Learning Programmes

Distance Education is available for BMLT subjects if someone intends to choose this route. The curriculum remains the same and the students get to learn as much as they get through the courses. The expertise needed in Laboratory Technology is taught at a deep level to help the students become skilled in the field. The skills that the students learn from the programme can be used to work and collaborate in advanced Medical Technology Labs.

The Admission Process:

Any distance programme offered in BMLT is done on the basis of merit and how deserving the candidate is. It is compulsory for the student to possess the certificate of completion for Class 12. Moreover, students can get access to the course even if they possess a related diploma in any such related field. One should realise that the concept of entrance exams is not really viable when it comes to BMLT admissions. One could consider going with IGNOU for a renowned distance learning programme in BMLT.

Entrance Exams for BMLT

Listed below are the exams to secure seats for BMLT courses at the premier institutes in India. The minimum eligibility condition for these exams is passing the Class 12 examination with a score at least above 60 per cent. Individually, every exam has different cutoff requirements for those scores.

  • JNUEE: Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Exam is conducted once a year to offer Admission to BMLT and other various courses. Other than JNU’s main campus, this exam provides entry for its 14 affiliated schools. The applications for JNUEE will be issued in July 2022.

  • PGIMER: This entrance exam is conducted for various medical degree courses such as BMLT.

  • JIPMER: For various medical courses, JIPMER has now been replaced by NEET and is conducted every year by NTA.

  • BCECE: It is held for enrollment in engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and architecture.
