BPT, also known as Bachelor of Physiotherapy, is a medical course that involves the study of human anatomy for rehabilitation. Here, students learn about exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques to aid several diseases. Through the knowledge gained from a BPT course, one can assist many people in coping with their illness and improve their physical and mental health.

BPT is only available as an undergraduate course. Students interested in studying physiotherapy post their BPT degree are encouraged to seek a Masters in Physiotherapy (MPT) degree. BPT is perfect for those interested in helping rehabilitate people healing their trauma and injuries.

Entrance Exams for BPT

Though some colleges offer direct admission to students, most base it on the candidate's performance in an entrance exam, some state-level and national-level entrance tests can qualify one for the BPT program. Only students who have cleared their 10+2 examination and scored at least 50% aggregate marks in biology, chemistry, and physics are eligible to appear for the exams. These exams are:

  • Common Entrance Test (CET)

  • JIPMER All India Entrance Exam

  • Guru Govinda Indraprastha University Physiotherapy Entrance Exam

  • IEMJEE

  • BCECE

The difficulty level of these exams is not very high. All of the examinations are objective, i.e., the questions are Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). The candidate must choose one option out of the four shown. The exam has a maximum of 200 questions to answer. The fees for these exams vary; some are cheaper while others are more expensive.

It is important to revise important topics relating to the exam before writing the BPT entrance exams. The candidates’ knowledge in physics, chemistry, zoology, and botany is tested the most. English is also tested. Each subject has an equal number of questions allotted to it. There is no negative marking in any of these exams.

Candidates who perform well in these entrance exams have the edge over the other applicants. Performing well also improves one’s chances of getting into some of the best BPT colleges in India, such as Manipal University, DY Patil Vidyapeeth, Ramaiah Medical College and so on.

Syllabus for Distance Programme in BPT

BPT can be studied via a distance/correspondence program. For those who cannot attend regular classes, this is an alternative they can consider. Here are some important points regarding distance learning or correspondence program in BPT in India:

  • The duration required to complete the course via distance learning is 4 years.

  • To be eligible for the course, students must have completed 10+2 education with a minimum aggregate of 50%. An entrance exam for qualification may also be held.

  • The average fee for the course ranges from INR 15,000 to INR 1,00,000 annually. The fees are usually lesser than the same course through regular means.

  • The syllabus for distance learning is the same as regular learning, minus the mandatory six-month internship that is part of a regular course.

However, it should be noted that the BPT Distance Program is not valid. BPT requires intensive practical training, not just theoretical knowledge. The final six months of a regular BPT degree is solely dedicated to practical work experience in a hospital or clinical setting. As this is not possible in a correspondence program, the University Grant Commission (UGC) does not consider it a valid program.

Top Colleges for BPT

The colleges recommended for the BPT course list are all top-ranking colleges and universities that have appeared in multiple ranking lists. These colleges provide their students with a top-tier education, state-of-the-art facilities, well-developed infrastructure, and other services and facilities. For any student wishing to pursue a BPT degree in India, these colleges are the cream of the crop. One can blindly choose from any of them.

BPT Syllabus: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. What is studied in BPT?

A. BPT, also known as Bachelor of Physiotherapy, is a course that involves the study of human anatomy for rehabilitation and physical therapy. Students learn about exercises, manual therapy, and other techniques to aid several diseases.

Q. How long does a BPT course take?

Q. How is the BPT mandatory internship structured?

A. The BPT program includes a six-month mandatory internship. This internship is rotary, i.e. the students must work in different clinical settings for each month of their internship. These clinical branches must be involved in Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, General Medicine, Gynaecology, and other medical specialisations.

Q. How are you graded in a BPT Course?

A. The general examination pattern in a BPT degree is structured similar to most courses. Students are graded based on their assignments, mid-semester examinations, and end-semester examinations. Practical examinations also play a critical role.

Q. What are the core subjects in BPT?

A. Student will take several core subjects when pursuing a course in BPT. Among these, some of them are as follows: • Human Anatomy • Neurology • Exercise Therapy • Orthopaedics and Traumatology • Physiology (of different fields).

Q. What are the possible specialisations in BPT?

A. BPT has no specialisations of its own. Students who pursue a Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) can opt for specialisation. Some of these include: • Sports Physiotherapy • Paediatrics Physiotherapy • Neurology Physiotherapy • Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

Q. Is there an entrance exam for BPT?

A. The main entrance exam students enrolling in a BPT program must take the CET examination. To be eligible for the exam, students must have cleared their 10+2 examination focusing on physics, chemistry, and biology. Some colleges also conduct their entrance exams.

Q. Can I do distance learning with BPT?

A. Yes, a BPT degree can be obtained via distance learning. The syllabus for the distance program is the same as a regular BPT program. However, as BPT requires practical knowledge and work experience via their mandatory six-month internship, a distance learning course is not valid.

Q. What are the documents required to enrol in a BPT degree course?

A. The main documents needed to get an admission in a BPT course are: • Birth Certificate • 10th and 12th mark sheet • Migration certificate • Character certificate

Q. Is doing a BPT course worth it?

A. This greatly depends on the person's interests. Students interested in learning more about human anatomy and how to help treat injuries and trauma through rehabilitation will be interested in this course. Those interested in healing others through surgery and other means will also enjoy this course.

Q. Are BPT degree courses tough?

A. BPT requires intensive study and research. Practical work is also a critical part of the course. Empathy is a critical skill needed as physiotherapists usually deal with patients in crises. However, while the course is quite challenging, those interested in this field should opt for it.

Q. Is doing a postgraduate degree (MPT) compulsory after BPT?

A. While it is recommended to do a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy, one can go without one as well. Though the career options are limited with only a BPT degree, graduates can work as lecturers, osteopaths, assistant physiotherapists, etc. A postgraduate degree lets one specialise in a field and opens more options.
