M.Tech life in CET Trivandrum.
Placements: I am for Structural Engineering in CET Trivandrum, now studying for 1st semester. Basically, for M.Tech, placement is less compared to B.Tech. Only a few get placed in civil core companies, others some get placed in IT companies. Our batch has 37 students, which is for the first time. We are a batch whose strength in Structural Engineering has increased from 18 to 36. Top recruiters are L&T when it comes to civil.
Infrastructure: Wi-Fi is available for our department. And labs also have adequate facilities. All classrooms have projectors and there is a big library. There are 2 libraries: department library and central library. There is only 1 hostel for ladies and only a few seats for M.Tech, so most of the PG students have to stay as paying guests outside the campus. The breakfast in the college canteen is good, but lunch is not so tasty. But food is provided at affordable rates. In hostels, each room accommodates 4 students and has a dormitory type of B.Ed. 2 tables and bathrooms are common. For PG, it's in the new block, which is a five-story building, and there is a lift in the hostel. Food is also good in the hostel.
Faculty: Teachers are very sincere and engage in every class hour. Most of the faculty members are senior with years of experience. But I feel some teachers’ classes are not easy to understand. No, I don’t think the course curriculum is relevant and makes the students industry-ready from my first semester experience. Now we are learning theories without having an actual understanding of what it is. In the first semester, the subjects are a bit difficult, especially Structural Dynamics and Theory of Elasticity.
Other: I chose Structural Engineering because I think it will have better job opportunities compared to other streams in civil engineering. The thing that needs improvement is that the M.Tech level syllabus should be updated from theory-based teaching in the classroom to practical-level field learning. Then only we will know what we are learning, how we can apply it, and where to apply it. Still learning the theories and knowing nothing is annoying. There are a lot of fests and events in CET. There are department fests for all the departments and common fests like arts, sports, Onam, Xmas, Drishti, and all, along with many programs conducted by different clubs like IEEE, EDC, etc. And Teach Fest. E-Grants, National Scholarship, and AICTE Stipends are the scholarships available. The chance of getting the NSP scholarship is less. For GATE students, a stipend of 12,400 per month and E-Grants for non-GATE students are provided.
