The national-level counselling processes such as JoSAA, CSAB, and DASA are based on JEE Main / JEE Advanced ranks and are administered by the central government. Meanwhile, state governments in various Indian states conduct state-level counselling, with many states in the north, west, east, and centre using JEE Main ranks and/or class 12 marks for admission to state government-run universities and affiliated colleges. Many states, particularly in the southern and northeastern regions, conduct their state-level entrance exams and counselling processes for BTech admissions in the state. Examples of these exams include KEAM, TS EAMCET, AP EAMCET, KCET, Assam CEE, TJEE, NERIST NEE, and MZUEEE.

BTech Admission in India

The allocation of BTech seats is carried out through counselling sessions conducted at both state and national levels. Below, you can find information about the specific counselling processes used by different states and the scoring criteria for the allocation of BTech seats.

There are two types of counselling held in India for BTech admission: National level and state level.

National-Level Counselling for BTech Admission via JEE Main: The national-level JoSAA counselling, organized by the Ministry of Education, oversees joint seat allocation for admissions to 121 institutes. These institutes include 23 IITs, 31 NITs, IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 40 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs). Additionally, national-level CSAB and DASA counselling, based on JEE Main scores, are also conducted.

State Counselling for BTech Admission via JEE Main

TNEA Counselling for Tamil Nadu State BTech Admission

In Tamil Nadu, JEE Main or any state-level entrance exam marks are not considered for BE/BTech admission. The state only takes into account the class 12 marks of the candidates for allocating BTech seats in State Government and State Government Aided Engineering Colleges, University Departments, and Constituent Colleges of Anna University, and Annamalai University. The online TNEA counselling is conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE), Chennai.

Admission based on: The TNEA counselling is based on class 12 marks only. 

Eligibility: The TNEA eligibility criteria is given below - 

A pass in the HSC (Academic: both +1 and +2) or its equivalent with a minimum average percentage is given below:

  • General Category - 45%
  • Backward Class including Backward Class Muslim - 40%
  • MBC & DNC - 40%
  • SC/SCA/ST - 40%

OR

A pass in any one of the HSC (Vocational Subject: both +1 and +2) as given below with any one of the Engineering subjects namely Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry with a minimum average percentage put together as given below:

  • General Category - 45%

UPTAC Counselling or AKTU Counselling for UP State BTech Admission

UPTAC, short for Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling, is an online state-level counselling process aimed at facilitating admissions to the first year of the BTech program in institutions affiliated or constituent to AKTU and other state universities. The counselling is conducted by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh Technical Education Department.

Admission based on: The UPTAC BTech counselling is based on JEE Main ranks only. 

Eligibility: Candidates who pass the 10+2 examination with Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Computer Science / Electronics / Information Technology / Biology / Informatics Practices / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational subject / Agriculture / Engineering Graphics / Business Studies/Entrepreneurship can apply. Also, candidates must have obtained at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates of reserved category) in the above subjects taken together.

OR

Candidates must have passed a minimum of 3 years of Diploma examination with at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates of reserved category) subject to vacancies in the First Year, in case the vacancies at lateral entry are exhausted.

Q:   Can I participate in JEE Main counselling next round if I do not accept the seat allotted to me in previous rounds?

A:
The process of JEE Main counselling and seat allotment consists of several processes. Once a seat is allotted to a candidate, he/she has the option of Accept and Freeze and Accept and Float. If a candidate is satisfied with the allotted seat and selects the first option, he/she cannot participate in the next round counselling. If the candidate is not satisfied with the allotted seat, he/she can select the second option trough which he/she can participate in the next round counselling with the current seat.

Q:   Do I need to pay any fees once seat is allotted in JEE Main counselling?

A:
Candidates will need to pay a certain amount of fees once the provisional seat allotment is made. The details of fees to be paid will be mentioned in the provisional seat allotment letter. Once the candidates pay the required fees, the seat allotted to the candidate will be confirmed and final allotment letter will be issued. The amount of fees will vary for various category of candidates.

Q:   What documents are required to participate in JEE Main counselling?

A:
To participate in the JEE Main counselling, candidates will need to upload the following documents at the time of JoSAA registration. Class 10 mark sheet/certificate Class 12 Certificate of category (if applicable) PwD Certificate (if applicable) After the seat allotment, while reporting to the institute, candidates will also need to submit documents like JoSAA seat allotment letter, JEE Main/Advanced admit card, Gap Certificate (if gap after class 12).. .

JAC Delhi Counselling for Delhi State BTech Admission

The Joint Admission Counselling (JAC) Delhi is a program designed for students seeking admission to BE/BTech and BArch degree programs in Delhi. It facilitates admissions to five prominent technical universities/institutes under the Government of NCT Delhi, namely Delhi Technological University (DTU), Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW), Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-D), Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU), and Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT).

Admission based on: The JAC Delhi counselling is based on JEE Main ranks only. 

Eligibility: The eligibility is given below:

JAC Chandigarh Counselling for Chandigarh BTech Admission

The Joint Admission Committee (JAC) administers admissions to BE and Integrated BE (Chemical) courses based on JEE Main scores and the pass percentage obtained in Class XII or equivalent examination. This admission process is commonly referred to as JAC Chandigarh admissions.

REAP Counselling for Rajasthan State BTech Admission

REAP stands for Rajasthan Engineering Admission Process and is overseen by the Centre For Electronic Governance (CEG) established by the Rajasthan government. REAP is an online centralized counselling procedure for admission to the first year of BE/BTech and BArch programs offered by government and private institutes in Rajasthan. The counselling process encompasses registration, choice filling, registration fee payment, merit list publication, seat allocation, and reporting to the allocated institute for admission.

Admission based on: The REAP counselling is based on JEE Main / Class 12 marks.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria is given below - 

  • Passed 10+2 examination with Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Computer Science / Electronics / Information Technology / Biology / Informatics Practices / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational subject / Agriculture / Engineering Graphics / Business Studies / Entrepreneurship.

MP BE Counselling for MP State BTech Admission

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Madhya Pradesh organizes the MP BE Counselling for admission to undergraduate engineering courses in the state. This admission process is for Government, Autonomous, Aided, Self-Financing, and Private Institutions in Madhya Pradesh. Admission is based on JEE Main and class 12 marks. The 2025 MP BE counselling will consist of two rounds, with seat allotment in rounds 1 and 2 based solely on JEE Main scores. Any remaining vacant seats after counselling will be filled based on the 10+2 scores of the candidates.

Admission based on: The MP BE counselling is based on JEE Main / Class 12 marks.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria is given below - 

  • Passed 10+2 examination with Physics/Mathematics/Chemistry/Computer Science/Electronics/Information Technology/ Biology /Informatics Practices/ Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject/Agriculture/Engineering Graphics/Business Studies/Entrepreneurship.

Bihar UGEAC Counselling for Bihar State BTech Admission

The Bihar UGEAC is an online counselling process for admission to BE/BTech courses in Government Engineering Colleges of Bihar, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Women's Institute of Technology, Exalt College of Engineering & Technology, and Buddha Institute of Technology. The admission process consists of two rounds of seat allotment based on JEE Main ranks. Any remaining vacant seats after the two rounds are filled based on the scores of the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (BCECE).

Admission based on: The MP BE counselling is based on JEE Main / Class 12 marks.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria is given below -

HSTES Counselling for Haryana State BTech Admission

HSTES, or the Haryana State Technical Education Society, is established by the Haryana Government to oversee state-level counselling for admission to a range of graduate and diploma programs in Engineering and Technology. The counselling process is conducted online and serves as the centralized admission channel for these programs.

Uttarakhand BTech Admission Counselling

The Uttarakhand BTech Admission counselling is a centralized online process conducted by Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technical University. Through this process, candidates are admitted to the first year of the BTech course in various institutions in Uttarakhand. The seat allotment is based on JEE Main ranks and class 12 marks, with priority given to candidates with JEE Main scores. Candidates with class 12 marks only are considered after the JEE Main candidates have been accommodated.

Similar to Tamil Nadu, Punjab has decided to base admission to BE/BTech courses offered by affiliated/autonomous colleges of IKGPTU Jalandhar, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, and MRSPTU Bathinda solely on class 12 marks. IKGPTU conducts the centralized state-level counselling known as the PTU BTech counselling.

Admission based on: The PTU BTech admission is based on class 12 marks only.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria are as follows -

  • All those candidates who have passed 10+2 examination from a Board recognized or established by the Central/State Government can register for PTU BTech admission.
  • Candidates must have studied Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Computer Science / Electronics / Information Technology / Biology / Informatics Practices / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational subject / Agriculture / Engineering Graphics / Business Studies / Entrepreneurship.
  • Agriculture stream (for Agriculture Engineering): Obtained at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in the above subjects taken together.

OR

  • Those candidates who have passed a minimum 03 years Diploma examination from Punjab State Board of Technical Education & Industrial Training, Chandigarh or Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal (SLIET), or any such examination from any other recognized State Board of Technical Education with at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) subject to vacancies in the First Year, in case the vacancies at lateral entry are exhausted.

OR

  • The candidates who have passed two years certificate course from Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Longowal (SLIET) shall be eligible.

JCECE BTech Counselling for Jharkhand State BTech Admission

The Jharkhand Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (JCECEB) conducts centralized online counselling for admission to BE/BTech courses offered by government-recognized engineering institutes in Jharkhand. Admission and seat allocation are based exclusively on national level JEE Main ranks.

Admission based on: The MP BE counselling is based on JEE Main ranks.

Eligibility: Candidates are eligible to apply for JCECE BTech counselling if they:

  • Have passed 12th standard or equivalent examination from a recognised board.
  • Have studied Mathematics and Physics as compulsory subjects as well as Chemistry or Biology as optional subjects.
  • Have secured a minimum aggregate of 45% in their qualifying exam if they are from the general category. However, reserved category candidates have to secure a minimum aggregate of 40%.

Odisha BTech Admission Counselling

In Odisha, admission to the BTech program is primarily based on JEE Main ranks. Any remaining vacant seats are then filled using special OJEE ranks. The OJEE Cell conducts the Odisha Joint Entrance Exam (OJEE) - Special, a state-level entrance exam specifically designed for filling these leftover BTech seats.

Admission based on: The Odisha BTech admission counselling is based on JEE Main ranks and Special OJEE ranks.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria are given below -

Goa BE Admission Counselling

In Goa, JEE Main ranks are utilized for admission to BE/BTech courses at state Universities. The admission process involves a centralized state-level counselling known as the Goa BE Admission counselling, which is based on JEE Main ranks.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria are given below - 

  • Candidates should have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (Std.XIIth) examination of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination with English, Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects with one of the following subjects Chemistry/Bio-Technology/Computer Science /Biology, and secured not less than 45% marks in the aggregate of subjects of Physics & Mathematics with one of the following subjects Chemistry/Bio-Technology/Computer Science/Biology. (40% for the applicants belonging to SC, ST and OBC only).
  • Candidates should have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (Std.XIIth) examination of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination with Mathematics as one of the subjects and secured at least 50% marks in aggregate (45% aggregate marks for applicants belonging to SC/ST/OBC).

OR

  • 10+3 Diploma (any stream) recognised by Central/State Governments with 50% aggregate marks.

OR

  • International Baccalaureate Diploma, after 10 years of schooling, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate and with Mathematics as a compulsory subject of examination.

Q:   Who can participate in JoSAA Counselling?

A:
All the candidates who have qualified JEE Main or JEE Advanced can participate in JoSAA counselling and seat allotment process. The eligibility criteria for JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams are set by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), respectively. JoSAA Counselling is the centralised counselling process for admission to the participating institutes in India, which include the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs).

Q:   What is the fee to participate in JEE Main Counselling?

A:
There is no fees for JoSAA counselling registration. Candidates can register for the counselling and participate in the counselling without any fees. However, candidates need to pay the seat confirmation fees once the seat is allotted to them. The fees for seat confirmation would vary for various categories and has to be paid online.

Q:   Can I participate in JoSAA counselling if I don't have 75% marks in class 12?

A:

It is mandatory to have minimum 75% marks (65% for reserved category) in class 12 to take admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Candidates should apply for JoSAA conselling only if they fulfill all the conditions of eligibility. However, many institutes admit students on the basis of JEE Main where there is no requirement of minimum marks in class 12. 

Q:   How many rounds are there in JEE Main counselling?

A:
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority JoSAA will conduct at total of six rounds counselling and seat allotment process. Earlier, up to 2021, JoSAA were conducted in seven rounds in 2022 the counselling was conducted in six rounds. It is expected that JEE Main counselling 2023 will also have a total of six rounds. The exact schedule with the number of rounds will be announced soon on the official website JoSAA. Nic. In.

Q:   Where can I check round-wise cutoff for all rounds of JEE Main counselling?

A:
The round-wise cutoff ranks for JEE Main counselling can be checked on the JoSAA portal at jossa. Nic. In. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority is the organizing body of JEE Main counselling. The cutoff for each round for all the participating institutes and branch/specializations are made available on the JoSAA portal. Candidates can also check JEE Main cutoff for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs on the Shiksha page.
