No, it is not mandatory to appear for both PSTET (Punjab Teacher Eligibility Test) Paper 1 and 2. Candidates can choose to appear for either Paper 1 or Paper 2, depending on their desired teaching level. The PSTET exam is conducted in two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is for candidates who wish to teach classes I to V, while Paper 2 is for candidates who wish to teach classes VI to VIII. However, candidates who wish to teach classes I to VIII have to appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Candidates can choose to appear for either Paper 1 or Paper 2 depending on their teaching preferences. For example, if a candidate wants to teach only classes 1 to 5, they can choose to appear for Paper 1 only. Similarly, if a candidate wants to teach only classes 6 to 8, they can choose to appear for Paper 2 only.

Punjab Teacher Eligibility Test (PSTET) levels are as follows: I. Primary Level (Class I-V) II. Upper Primary Level (Class IV-VIII) Educational Qualification: 1. Minimum educational qualifications for becoming Teacher for Classes I-V (Primary Level): Degree with Minimum 50% from a UGC recognised university/ SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ freedom fighters will be given for 5% in Degree & 02 years Diploma (DEd) from NCTE/ Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or Degree with 02 years BTC, CT (Nursery)/ Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) (02 years) from Established by Law and UGC recognised university. or Degree with qualify in Special BTC Training from a UGC recognised university or 4 years Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd) 2. Minimum educational qualification for becoming Teacher for Classes VI-VIII (Elementary Level): Degree with BTC from a UGC recognised university & National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) or Degree with 50% from a UGC recognised institution/ Degree (BEd)/ BEd Special Education from Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) or Intermediate with 50% & 4 years BA/ BSCEd/ BAEd from recognised by NCTE / UGC or Intermediate with minimum 50% & 4 years Bachelor’s degree in elementary education (BElEd). or Degree with minimum 45% from established by Law and UGC recognised institution (SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ freedom fighter candidates will be given for 5%) & BEd.

Q:   Is there any negative marking in PSTET?

In the PSTET exam, papers 1 and 2 contain 150 objective-type multiple-choice questions (MCQs) each. Paper 1 comprises 5 sections i.e. Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies. Paper 2 comprises 4 sections with a choice in the fourth one i.e. Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language-II, and Mathematics and Science or Social Studies. PSTET Marking Scheme: 1 mark is allotted for every correct answer and there is no negative marking in the PSTET exam.

Q:   How many papers does one need to give to qualify the PSTET exam?

Candidates planning to teach Classes 1 to 5 need to qualify PSTET Paper 1. Candidates planning to teach Classes 6 to 8 need to qualify for PSTET Paper 2. Candidates planning to teach Classes 1 to 8 need to qualify both papers. The candidates have to apply for the papers according to their eligibility set by the board. The educational qualification criteria has been given below for the candidates:

  • Paper 1 
    • Class 12 with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in the final year of 2 years Diploma in Elementary Education
    • Class 12 with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in the final year of 4 years Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd)
  • Paper 2
    • Graduation with a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education. Graduation with minimum 50 per cent marks and passed or appearing in one-year BEd

PSTET Syllabus 2023

PSTET syllabus includes topics from Child Development and Pedagogy, Language, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies subjects. The level of questions in PSTET Paper 1 is of secondary level and in PSTET paper 2, the level is of senior secondary level.

Yes, you can apply for the PSTET once you complete your M.Com and B.Ed. Any way, the eligibility criteria for the PSTET is a Bachelor's degree and a B.Ed. qualification. Since you have both, you can target the different teaching jobs available in PSTET.
