CLAT Exam Analysis 2019 by Expert - Know difficulty level & expected cutoff

A bout of jitters comes to a halt with the successful conduction of CLAT 2019 across the country on May 26, 2019, by CLAT consortium. The exam, which acts as a gateway to 21 National Law Universities (NLUs), was conducted in single slot of 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Unlike last year, this year the exam was held in offline mode (pen-paper based test), keeping all the technical glitches faced by the aspirants last year at bay. Students were supposed to mark the answers on an Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet by filling in the appropriate bubbles. For students’ ease and to make the subsequent process hassle-free and transparent, a carbon copy of the solved OMR was furnished to each aspirant.

Barring NLU Delhi, which conducts its own exam – AILET (All India Law Entrance Test), all other National Law Universities and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (five year law program)  and a few private law schools namely UPES-Dehradun, Nirma University-Ahmedabad etc., will be accepting CLAT scores as a part of their admission procedure.

CLAT Exam Pattern 2019

The pattern of this year’s paper was very similar to that of last so many years’. It incorporated a total of 200 multiple choice questions unfurled across five sections-English, GK, Elementary Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and Legal Aptitude. For every correct answer, one mark is awarded. However, for every wrong option selected by the candidate, 0.25 marks is knocked off from his/her total score. This makes imperative for the candidate to attempt only those questions of which s/he is sure to answer correctly.

The paper doesn’t come out as bolt from the blue. Rather being unconventional, questions were skewed on traditional lines, neither tricky nor time consuming. If not for a few questions here and there in Math section, the paper surfaced out as a non-controversial and well framed attempt by CLAT committee.

CLAT Exam Analysis 2019: English Section (40 questions)

For most of the students this is one such section which gives the heebie-jeebies. But this year it turned out to be a cake walk. It had 8 questions based on a Reading Comprehension, 10 questions on sentence correction, that were basically carved out from the topic of Subject Verb Agreement, 4 questions on Parajumbles, 2 questions on Vocabulary in the form of Synonyms and Antonyms, 5 questions each on foreign words and misspelt words. Remaining questions were based on Idioms and Phrases, the meaning of which were too deduced from the statements in which they were imbibed. 35 around attempts will be considered a good attempt, ensuring a minimum of 30+ score.

CLAT Exam Analysis 2019: General Knowledge Section (50 questions)

This year GK section was inundated by current affairs questions, with the discounting of one question from static GK. Questions were rolled out across various events of national and international importance on Science and Technology, Economics, Books and Authors, Important Dates, etc. Any candidate who kept himself in constant touch with current affairs of last 6-8 months, if not more, could have made a decent attempt of 35+ questions, with a manageable score of 30+.

CLAT Exam Analysis 2019: Reasoning Section (40 questions)

Much expected critical reasoning questions found no mention in this year’s paper. The questions were framed around analytical reasoning skills. Topics like Directions, Blood Relations, Puzzle, Syllogisms, Seating Arrangement, Coding-Decoding, Odd One Out etc, found profound room in the reasoning section. 35+ questions will be considered a good attempt with a score of 30+.

CLAT Exam Analysis 2019: Legal Aptitude Section (50 questions)

This section is considered as one of the favorites among law aspirants. But much to our surprise, there were no experiments done in this section too. All the questions were summed up around legal reasoning, resting on direct facts and principles. None of the questions fell under the purview of legal GK. Also this time, principles were not too wordy. They were kept short and precise, which in turn commanded a good attempt of 40+ questions from the students. A score of 35+ can be easily expected from this section.

CLAT Exam Analysis 2019: Mathematics Section (20 questions)

The vibrant feel of the entire paper was well carried by this section as well. Questions were in sync with conventional topics like Clocks, Calendars, Profit and Loss etc. Arithmetic and number system based questions also found a mention, like always. Leaving aside one question which has been termed as erroneous, remaining questions were easy to solve. 15 + questions will be termed as a good attempt with a score of 14 +.

By and large, CLAT 2019 was one of the easiest papers ever held. Keeping all the facts in mind, the expected CLAT cutoff for this year is going to be very high. It will fall somewhere around 150 + for top 3 National Law Universities and 130 + for the next NLUs in league. GK will certainly act as a deciding factor with a prerequisite of good score in Math.
