NExT Step 1 exam

9 Feb '28

A. Upto Class 10th, I did my education in Kundal, my hometown in Konkan. For further studies, I moved to Mumbai. I joined Seth GS Medical College for MBBS in 2017 After my NEET UG. My father is an Obstetrician and Gynecologist so I have always had exposure to the medical field and that inspired me. Also, I have always been highly interested in science, especially Biology. I enjoyed it more than maths and physics. I also looked up to my brother who was doing his MBBS in LTMMC at the time. So I felt like this was the right field for me.

Q. How did your family support you in your journey?

A. My brother and my sister-in-law were there to guide me throughout the year on how to study and how many revisions to do, how many tests to give etc. They have already given this exam and done really well before joining LTMMC for their Obstetrics and gynecology residency.

Q:   How many candidates appear for NEET PG?

A:

Around 2 Lakh candidates appear for NEET PG every year. The number varies every year. This year 2,28,540 candidates appeared for the exam. In NEET PG 2023, around 2,06,541 candidates appeared for the exam. In 2022, approximate number of candidates appeared for NEET PG exam was 1. 8 lakh. NEET PG 2024 exam was held on August 11 in computer-based mode in 170 test cities at 416 test centres.

Q:   How many times can we appear for NEET PG?

A:

Candidates can appear for as many times as they want. There is no cap on the number of attempts in NEET PG exam. As per the experts, candidates may appear twice for the exam to improve the score or to do away mistakes in the first attempt. NEET PG exam is held in computer-based mode. Candidates who qualify the exam with the minimum cut off can participate in the counselling process. They have to register and declare choice for college to participate in the seat allocation process.

Q:   What are NEET PG tie breaking criteria in case two candidates score same score?

A:

In case of two students secure the same score in the NEET PG merit list 2023, then the following tie-breaking criteria will be considered for providing admission:

  • More number of correct responses
  •  Lesser number of incorrect responses
  • Candidate who will be older than his/her counterpart will be preferred
  • Higher aggregate marks

Q:   Can I opt for Hindi in NEET PG exam?

A:

No. There is no option of any other language other than English. According to the existing NEET PG pattern, the exam is conducted in English language only. While NEET exam is conducted in 13 languages, NEET PG is conducted in only one language. NBE releases exam pattern along with the official information brochure. According to existing exam pattern, the exam is conducted in computer-based mode. Total 200 multiple choice questions are asked of 800 marks. Total allotted time for the question paper is 3.5 hours.

Q:   Can I apply offline for NEET PG?

A:

No. Candidates will have to register on the official website for NEET PG exam and submit application form. Offline and other mode of application will not be accepted. NBE, the exam conducting body will be releasing the application form online. Candidates will have to complete registration first to submit application form. NEET PG 2024 application form was released on April 16, 2024.

My father has motivated me to aim high since day one of MBBS and he believed I could achieve such a great rank when even I didn't believe in myself. He also took time off from his busy practice and came to cheer me on two days before the exam. My mother was my emotional support and my mental strength pillar throughout this journey. She stayed with me in Mumbai entirely for the last two months before the exam and looked after my health and made sure I didn't have to do any household chores. Her contribution was the most instrumental in this result. My entire family was there to drop me off at my exam centre and they gave me words of encouragement, reassurance and kindness up to the very last minute. I am deeply grateful to all of them.

Q. Where did you complete your rotatory internship?

A. I am currently doing my internship from Seth GS Medical college and KEM hospital. I still have roughly three months left.

Q. Did you appear for any other PG medical entrance examination?

A. NEET PG is the first pg entrance exam that I've appeared for and this was my first attempt.

Q. What are your thoughts on the NEET PG 2023 postponement that many candidates requested? Do you think the exam should've been postponed?

A. I did not feel it was right to ask for a postponement so close to the exam. It created a lot of chaos and uncertainty for all aspirants. There are many different types of candidates who appear for NEET PG, not just interns. And a postponement of three months would have derailed the process of bringing back the original academic year schedule which the NMC has been trying to do.

Q. How did you prepare for NEET PG 2023?

A. I had finished making notes and watching lecture videos of a majority of subjects before final year, I did a major chunk during the lockdown. In my final year, I only studied for my university exams. Once the internship started I solely focused on reading notes and solving MCQs, with no more videos and lectures, because there is very limited time. I used to plan out my entire month in my diary, including which subjects to do and what tests to give. I would try my best to stick to this plan.

Q. How much time did you devote to self-study vs. coaching and how do you manage to do both?

A. I think in the internship year there is only enough time to do self-study. There is no time to now start coaching and start from scratch. So I only focused on self-studying and improving on my own. Self-Analysis of my mistakes and which subjects I needed to improve upon was important.

Q. Did you take any mock tests to prepare for NEET PG 2023 preparations?

A. Yes, I had given a lot of tests throughout the year since the very beginning. Initially, I gave two tests a month after every 14 days. Then after December, I increased this frequency. It was really good practice. You cannot avoid giving tests if you want to do well on the exam. It's an absolute must.

Q. Did you have any specific exam day strategy?

A. I tried my best to get as much sleep as possible the night before, on exam day I tried to stay calm and cool. I did some self-talking before the exam started and I told myself that I would give this exam just like all the other mock tests I've given. No overthinking and no silly mistakes- that was my priority. And I also tried to be as aggressive as possible with my approach, I solved 199 MCQs and left only 1.

Q. What are your hobbies and did you find time to engage in your hobbies throughout your NEET PG 2023 preparations?

A. I really love singing, painting, and dancing. But unfortunately, as the months went by, I found lesser and lesser time to devote to my hobbies. I did do some painting to relax and take my mind off of things. But as the exam got closer I tried to focus only on studying and resting my mind in the remaining time.

Q. Any message or advice for future medical aspirants?

A. Do not set a limit on your goals. Don't underestimate yourself. Aim really high and just work hard to get there. Your subconscious mind needs to know that you're capable of achieving much more than you realise. You will have to make some sacrifices during this one year of preparation, but it all becomes worth it in the end. Don't give in to the temptations of spending your time doing what everyone around you is doing. Focus on your personal goals and personal objectives to achieve those goals.
