The NEET 2024 re-revised scorecard and merit list were released by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on July 26, 2024. The revision of scores was made based on revoking the bonus marks on the controversial Physics question, based on the Supreme Court verdict. Only those candidates who selected Option 4 for that question got 4 marks and selection of any other option resulted in a negative marking of -1. On the other hand, no marks were awarded or deducted for those who did not attempt the question.
Notably, as many as 44 candidates got full marks of 720 after receiving the bonus marks. The revision of scores led to the revision of the entire NEET 2024 rank list. According to the revised NEET 2024 merit list, the total number of toppers reduced to 17. As many as 13,15,853 candidates qualified for NEET 2024 out of 23,33,162 test takers. NTA identified 135 unfair means (UFM) cases and disqualified them from the NEET 2024 exam, reducing the total number of test-takers from 23,33,297 to 23,33,162.Â

Q: Â What is the marking scheme of NEET?
The marking scheme for NEET has been stated by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is expected that the marking scheme will remain the same for the next year's NEET as well. Four marks is awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for each wrong answer. The complete marking scheme is given in the table below.
Response Type | Marks awarded |
---|---|
Correct answer | +4 |
Incorrect answer | -1 |
Question with more than one response | -1 |
Unanswered question | 0 |
Extra attempted question | 0 |
Since the total number of questions in NEET question paper is 200, out of which 180 questions have to be attempted, the total marks of the exam is 720.
Q: Â What is the procedure to calculate the NEET percentile score?
A percentile refers to the comparison between the score of one candidate vis-a-vis the other test takers. It is the percentage of scores that a particular score surpassed. NTA has stated the formula to calculate the NEET percentile, which is given below:
100 multiplied by the Number of candidates with their raw score equal to/ less than the candidate divided by the Total number of candidates who appeared for NEET.
As per the NEET 2023 result data, the highest percentile obtained was 99.9999019.
Q: Â What is the difference between NEET score and percentile?
The NEET score and percentile are two different entities, and they serve distinct purposes. Here's the difference between them:
NEET Score:
The NEET score is the actual mark obtained by a candidate in the NEET exam. It is a raw score that reflects the number of correct answers a candidate has attempted. The NEET score is used to determine the qualifying status of a candidate for admission to medical and dental colleges.
NEET Percentile:
The percentile score, on the other hand, indicates the candidate's performance relative to other examinees. It is a measure of how many candidates have scored equal to or below the candidate's score in the exam. The percentile score is calculated by dividing the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam into 100 equal groups, with each group representing a percentile.
For example, if a candidate scores 600 out of 720 in NEET, their percentile score would be around 90, indicating that they have scored higher than 90 per cent of the total candidates who appeared for the exam.
In summary, the NEET score reflects the actual mark obtained, while the percentile score reflects the candidate's relative performance compared to others. Both scores are important, and they serve different purposes in the admission process.
NEET Result 2024: Tie-breaking Protocol
What happens when two or more candidates secure the same marks in NEET UG results? Owing to a large number of test-takers, it is not rare for two or more candidates to secure the same marks in this examination. However, such candidates will not share the same rank on the NEET merit list. Hence, NTA has a tie-break mechanism in place for such situations. The following parameters are considered in the case of tie-in scores:Â
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the Test,
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the Test, followed by
- Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the Test.
- Application Number in ascending order. Â
The last factor has been added later by NTA.
Also Read: NEET 2024 Tie-Breaking Criteria Reversed to Last Year's Factors
Initially, NTA had stated a change in the NEET 2024 tie-breaking criteria, wherein instead of considering the proportion of correct answers, the draw of lots was slated to be considered. However, the criteria were reversed within a month. The original NEET 2024 tie-breaking criteria are given below.Â
- Candidate obtaining higher marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks in Chemistry in the Test, followed by,
- Candidate obtaining higher marks in Physics in the Test, followed by,
- Draw of lots by using the computer or IT with no human intervention.
Till 2022, NTA considered factors like candidates older in age and application number in descending order. These criteria have been removed for NEET 2023.Â

NEET 2024 Result and Merit List
NTA releases the merit list of the candidates based on the NEET result. Multiple lists are released based on the category of the candidate. An overall NEET merit list is also released which carries details of all the candidates who cleared the examination. Based on these lists, MCC and various counselling authorities will prepare their merit or seat allotment lists.Â
Types of Merit ListsÂ

What after NEET 2024 Results?
Candidates who qualify for NEET will be considered eligible to participate in the NEET counselling process, which is conducted at both state and national levels. The national-level counselling for admission to the 15 per cent All India quota seats was conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
The actual admission process begins after the announcement of the NEET results. Candidates must then prepare themselves for the NEET counselling process by researching the top medical colleges to which they can take admission. After the NEET 2024 results are announced, every candidate will know their All India Ranks (AIR). These ranks can be used in the NEET College Predictor to get a list of medical colleges for which they are eligible. Â
Candidates can then check the NEET 2023 cutoff for admission to these colleges. They can then visit the official websites of the respective colleges and check the infrastructure and fee structure of the colleges. Being prepared with a list of medical colleges to which one plans to apply can prove beneficial during the counselling process.Â
