Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) is a public collegiate university, established in 2000. Formerly known as Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) is a ‘University of National Importance’, specially for the UG and PG courses offered in the field of Engineering and Science. AKTU was established on 26 July 2000 as the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) through the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
To ensure proper management and administrative ease, the university was divided into Gautam Buddh Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU), from 1 May 2010.
In 2013, as the new government came into power, UPTU University, Lucknow was merged as a single university combining the two on 5 January 2013.
In 2015, UPTU Lucknow was renamed Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU).
Currently, AKTU is in its newly inaugurated campus in Jankipuram, Lucknow. Additionally, AKTU Lucknow remains one of the largest technical universities with more than 700 affiliated colleges.

The total course fee for the BTech programme at AKTU ranges between INR 35,600 and INR 12.5 lakh. AKTU BTech admissions is offered based on JEE Main scores. However, UPSEE scores will be considered to fill the vacant seats after JEE Main Counselling is over. The counselling process of shortlisted candidates is managed and regulated by AKTU based on which the candidates are allotted seats. AKTU admission 2024 to various courses offered at UG, PG, and doctorate levels are granted either based on merit in previous qualifying degrees or national-level entrance exams such as CUET, NATA, JEE Main, etc. The mode of application is online. For admission to its BTech programme, APJ Abdul Kalam University Lucknow accepts the JEE Main scores.
