Q:   How successful is the placement cell in securing jobs for M.Sc. students at CUSAT?

    A:
    {Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

    Placement Cell

Unfortunately, there is no placement cell in the M.Sc. programme at CUSAT. According to the students' reviews:

    * "Companies have stopped coming to our department since 2018 because most students were going for higher studies like Ph.D., M.Tech., MS, etc."
    * "Students are working as scientists, professors, and engineers. interested students can go for internships if they get the chance."

This indicates that there is no dedicated placement cell or efforts made by the institution to secure jobs for M.Sc. students. Students seem to rely on their own initiatives to find employment opportunities.

Average college for M.Sc. in Oceanography course.
Placements: I think this college is greatly underappreciated, and the general quality of instruction is excellent. Placements are also rather strong. These alumni hold very important jobs. Large corporations like IBM, TCS, Infosys, and others are hiring students.
Infrastructure: The entire CUSAT college experience is fantastic. There are numerous chances for students to pursue their interests at the college. TedX and SEDS are only two of the numerous clubs and organizations on campus. Also, CUSAT hosts a sports and arts festival every year. The college has cafeterias, a library with a large selection of study materials, and a gym. The library is a great resource.
Faculty: Although we rely on YouTube courses and an AI model for the majority of our tasks, the instructor members are excellent. Although the semesters are challenging, the instruction is of high quality. You can succeed if you dedicate at least an hour each day to studying.

The infrastructure and lab facility is also good.
Placements: So many companies come to campus, including TCS, Deloitte, HCL, and the Aditya Birla group. They offer a variety of positions, with salaries ranging from an average of 5 lakhs to a high of 15 lakhs. The placement rate for human resources is 50%, which is higher than the average of 70% for finance and 95% for marketing.
Infrastructure: The overall college experience at CUSAT is awesome. The college provides a lot of opportunities for students to explore their interests. There are many clubs and organizations on campus, including SEDS and TedX. CUSAT also has an annual arts and sports festival. The college provides a gym, cafeterias, and a library with a wide variety of study materials. The library is very helpful.
Faculty: The faculty members to student ratio is 15:1. The faculty members are approachable, but we have to build the interactive relationship with the professors ourself. Each faculty member is good at teaching their subject and providing knowledge. There are three internals (20+20+20) and the best two of the three count. After that, there is an end-semester exam of 60 marks each semester. We have to complete at least one internship to be eligible for placement programs.

MCA is better than M.Sc.; the companies prefer MCA.
Placements: 60% of students were placed in our course. 7.3 LPA was the highest, 3.6 LPA was the lowest, and the average package is 3.6 LPA. TCS, Rently, Cognizant, Turbolab, SOTI, Tata Elxsi, etc. No one got an internship from our course. Everyone did the project. System engineers and AI developers are the top roles offered by our course.
Infrastructure: The classrooms are limited. The labs are very good. But the department can't accommodate everyone in one lab. There is a shortage of classrooms. Food, medical, and sports facilities are all good. Many sports events will be hosted for the department, and it's nice.
Faculty: The teachers are highly qualified and helpful. All the teaching staff were professors. Yes, the course curriculum is relevant. But I won't guarantee that students will be industry-ready because it's a state-owned autonomous college. The semester exams' difficulty depends on the faculty members. The pass percentage in our class was 100 percent.

    Great placement with world-class facilities.
Placements: Placement for students was eligible from third year. About 60% of the students were offered placements. The entire selection process was based on how they were interviewed. Last year, students could participate in the admissions process. Top recruitment agencies visited our campus. The salary package offered ranged from 3 LPA - 4 LPA. I wanted to work in the government, so I was studying for the PSC exams.
Infrastructure: All hostels in our college were good. Our university had good services. Each room had three beds, a desk, and a ceiling fan. Food in the hostel was good. There were no special dishes, but the food was very delicious and hygienic. The registration process was simple. Priority was given to hostel accommodation for students from remote areas. Hostel cost, including meals is Rs. 2300 per month.
Faculty: Faculty members were very friendly and talented. They know how to teach and have extensive experience helping students succeed. Course curriculum a bit more complex as it covers all the core subjects, so it is more challenging. Semester exams were easy and pass rate was around 70%.

Well-rounded campus, hygienic food, and great faculty members.
Placements: CUSAT is known for helping engineering students find jobs, while a master's degree in Physics focuses on research and teaching. About 20% to 30% of students find jobs outside of college, mostly in visualization, software, and data analysis. However, most students need a master's degree (about 40-50%) or a research position at a reputable university. Universities provide good resources for students, but if departments could do more to connect Physics students with other disciplines, their chances of finding a job could improve.
Infrastructure: The CUSAT campus has well-equipped classrooms, a well-equipped library, and adequate facilities for all departments. The Science department has advanced research equipment, but classrooms and labs need upgrading. The food is excellent, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, and hygiene is excellent. The college has sports facilities, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, football, and a playground.
Faculty: CUSAT faculty is highly qualified and experienced. They have the ability to explain complex real-life examples easily. The courses are carefully structured and tailored to industry and academic needs, which helps students develop new skills. Their clear way of teaching helps students understand basic and advanced concepts, which is why the program has a success rate of 85-90%.

Want to choose M.Sc. in Forensic Science - Come to CUSAT.
Placements: For our course, the amount of placement support provided was below the expected level. The placement cell should have some concerns about the course. When we sought help from the placement cell they were not even concerned that they had such a course in CUSAT. It was very disappointing.
Infrastructure: Best classroom infrastructure and air-conditioners were provided. Classrooms were smart. All things were above our way of expectations. Hostel was government-provided by this college by allotment which was somewhat disappointing. Mess food was really disappointing.
Faculty: Our syllabus was the best. I was able to achieve UGC NET before even completing the course itself. Faculty members were somewhat supportive, and they conducted exams which were very much satisfying. They were very punctual in conducting exams and publishing the results.
Other: I chose this course out of my interest. At first, I thought it was a bad decision but the way they led me to the subject made me fall in love with the course. We have a lot of opportunities outside Kerala as forensic science is an emerging course.

    FAQs

Q:   Is CUSAT good for M.Sc.?

    A:
    {Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

Is Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) Good for M.Sc.?

Based on the reviews and feedback from students and alumni, here are the key points that highlight the strengths and weaknesses of CUSAT for pursuing an M.Sc. program:

    * Teaching Quality: The faculty members are highly qualified, knowledgeable, and responsible. They have good teaching skills and use modern technology to explain concepts.
    * Infrastructure: The college has good infrastructure, with modern laboratories, libraries, and computer facilities. However, some students mentioned that the hostel rooms could be better maintained.
    * Placement Opportunities: While there may not be a dedicated placement cell, many students have been able to secure placements in reputed organizations, both within India and abroad. The average salary package is around INR3.6 LPA, with the highest package being INR7.3 LPA.
    * Research Opportunities: CUSAT has a strong focus on research, and students have the opportunity to pursue projects under the guidance of experienced faculty members. This can lead to publications and presentations at national and international conferences.
    * Course Curriculum: The course curriculum is relevant and updated regularly to meet industry requirements.
    * Internship Opportunities: Although there may not be a formal internship program, students have mentioned that they have secured internships in central government institutions and private companies.

However, some areas where CUSAT falls short include:

    * Limited Classroom Space: Some students mentioned that the number of classrooms is limited, making it difficult for all students to access them simultaneously.
    * Internet Connectivity: While Wi-Fi connectivity is available, some students reported slow speeds and occasional disruptions.
    * Hostel Facilities: While the hostel rooms are comfortable, some students felt that the food options could be improved, and the Wi-Fi connectivity could be better.

Overall, CUSAT seems to offer a good environment for pursuing an M.Sc. program, with supportive faculty members, adequate infrastructure, and opportunities for research and placements. However, students should weigh these benefits against the potential drawbacks before making a decision.
