The course structure of the M.A. programme in English at IIT Bombay is as follows: First Year: Semester I: Literary Theory and Criticism, British Literature from 14th to 18th century, American Literature, Indian Writing in English Semester II: British Literature from 19th century to Contemporary times, Literary Genres (Poetry, Drama, Novel), Commonwealth Literature, Language and Linguistics Second Year: Semester III: Optional Papers (choose from a range of electives), Indian Aesthetics, Literary and Cultural Studies Semester IV: Dissertation In the first year of the programme, students are introduced to the foundational concepts and theories of literature, along with the history of literature in Britain, America, and India. They also study the different literary genres such as poetry, drama, and novel. Students are expected to carry out a successful programme of research within the duration of the programme.
