Review of IIT Kharagpur - Indian Institute of Technology (IITKGP).
Placements: Cryogenic engineering is a department which doesn't offer any bachelors degree course. It offers only a masters degree and PhD. The department mainly focuses on providing a platform for research in the premium areas of science like liquefaction of the atmospheric gases, superconductivity, vacuum technology and very basic plasma-related operations. However, operation of the companies like Air Liquide and LINE are directly related to the courses taught and hence sometimes recruit students from this department. The salary package offered is generally more than 7 LPA.
Infrastructure: Laboratories available includes an introductory lab to cryogenics, heat transfer lab, vacuum technology lab, cold electronics and control lab, advanced superconductivity lab, process and instrumentation lab superconductivity and cryophysics lab. Laboratories are well-equipped with high-quality equipment, and desktop computers are also loaded with high-end simulation software to provide a broad and deep knowledge about the recent operations which are going around the world related to cryogenics. Besides, there is a liquid nitrogen plant in the centre with a production capacity of 25 litres per hour and a liquid helium plant to be set up very soon. Hostels are well-equipped with all the facilities. Rooms are spacious, and single, double and triple sharing rooms are available in various halls. Food quality is good, though sometimes it may not be delicious. Wi-Fi speed is low in some sections, though separate LAN facility is available for each border in their respective rooms.
Faculty: All the faculty members in our college are highly qualified with either a degree or some certification from renowned foreign universities. Also, faculty members are in close contact with various industries and are specialists in their respective domains. Courses in this department are quite relevant for getting an insight into the activities of the industries. But students must be willing to learn through participation in various lab-related activities.
Other: Being from an electrical engineering background, I was fascinated by activities and research works which are going on in the area of superconductivity and its various applications. The only thing that I found missing in the students taking admission in this course was the lack of zeal to take up new challenged areas and prosper in those domains. The campus life of the institute is very active with some or other festivals being a routine activity.
