Students seeking admission to PhD must have completed their masters' degree with at least 60% aggregate (For General category candidates). In addition to this, they are required to go through an entranc exam and interview round conducted at the institute level for final admission. Candidates preparing for IITs are only required to appear for the JEE Advanced entrance exam after qualifying JEE Main. Students who who secure above the 98th percentile in JEE Main 2024 Session 2 should start preparing for JEE Advanced 2025 immediately. Those who score between 95th and 98th percentile should focus on improving their JEE Main score by taking multiple mock tests and practicing previous year's question papers. By analysing their strengths and weaknesses, candidates can identify their areas of proficiency and topics where they need improvement. If they can achieve full marks in their practice sessions, they can start preparing for JEE Advanced. However, if they cannot score full marks, it is recommended that they appear for multiple mock test series for more practice. 

There are seven departments in total at NIT Nagaland. Civil engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Science and Humanities, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electronics and Instrumentation engineering are some of these fields. NIT Nagaland considers the scores of IIT-JAM for admission to the MSc programme. Followed by IIT JAM, students have to go through the CCMN counselling for final seat allotment to the institute. In addition to the exam, students must also meet the minimum eligibility criteria set by the institute which is to have a bachelor’s degree, namely BSc (Hons) in Physics with first class or 6.5 CGPA for General and OBC candidates and 55% aggregate or 6.0 CGPA in 10 scale grading for SC and ST candidates.

Well-equipped dorms are available at NIT Nagaland. There are four dormitories for boys with 64 seats, one for ladies with 56 seats, and one for PG boys with 32 seats. Excellent meal services that cater to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food choices are also provided on campus.
