CEED 2021 Part B Exam Analysis

The drawing paper (PART B) comprised of FIVE questions that tested students on various aspects of creative ideas and visualisation, design thinking, critical thinking, problem identification and problem-solving, storyboarding, pictograms & product design.

Question 1 had a character is drawn (boy). The students were asked to maintain the continuity of the character and exhibit into visual storytelling format depicting the character in two situations (a) the boy shooting mango & (b) the character playing in mush in the rain. This was the visual storyboarding question where the activity showed had to be reminiscent of the character in terms of its mood, his stance, expressions, the back ground, and the props.

Question 2 came from the category of creative visualisation where the given incomplete visuals had to be completed into recognisable elements/images in black and white only. This is truly ‘do-you-have-it-in-you’ question type as it tests the students for their creative imagination, a prerequisite must for design! The trick here would be to view the block each time as fresh irrespective of the other blocks and the students should use the block from any direction as it would fuel their imagination differently each time, do zoom, mid and long shots and keep changing the themes.

Question 3 was based on pictogram design with a few signs like ‘Cardiology’, ‘Male’, Female’ was made in a certain style and the students were asked to draw more in accordance with the design pattern followed in the given examples so as to make a seamless series. The required signs were: ‘Cancer ward’, ‘Maternity ward’ & ‘Pediatric ward’.

Question 4 was based on product design where an image was given and building on the same a water bottle and lunch box for kids had to be designed. In this case, besides incorporating the image into the 3-dimensional structure for product design was the obvious requisite, it was important to define the age of the used segment, take client appropriate creative inspiration, product function and value addition in the same with size mention and material rendering as per the material defined were equally important.

Typical to CEED, question 5 was based on problem identification and solution finding from the social design sector. Befitting the concerns of the current time, as the schools are about to open for students, one very sensitive safety concern can be the community taps for drinking water/ wash place, in a school, that most students drink straight from, thus making it a potential hot spot. Provided was an image of the same. Keeping in mind the Corona norms, list the flaws and measurements to be taken and illustrate any three with description.  This aims at testing the critical thinking abilities of the aspirants.

CEED result will be declared on March 8, 2021. Following the scores, the merit will be drawn and the calls sent out.

Wishing All the Luck once again!
