Since there is no change in the CAT exam pattern this year, your mock test practice strategy should not change either. The CAT exam will be of 120 minutes and for each section there will be a sectional time-limit of 40 minutes. By now, most of you would have completed the CAT syllabus and be ready to move to practising CAT mock tests. In the CAT 2024 exam, candidates will have to solve 66 questions. So, to be able to utilise every minute of those two hours, practice the time-bound online mock tests prepared as per the pattern of CAT 2024 exam.

Q:   What are the benefits of CAT mock test?

A:
Practicing CAT mock test is beneficial for improving speed and accuracy in solving the question paper in the actual exam. It also helps the candidates in identifying gaps in their CAT preparation to work upon them. Practicing sample questions is the best way of any exam preparation. Mock Test is even better as it helps you in solving questions correctly in a time bound manner. Practising CAT mock test also provides with the experience of actual exam environment beforehand, which is immensely helpful in smooth navigation on the exam day. Sectional mock tests for CAT help candidates in timing themselves accurately for each of the three sections of CAT. There is sectional time-limit in CAT. Which means every section of CAT is allotted a certain duration (40 minutes). The moment that duration is over, the computer screen moves to the next section. If the candidate hasn't completed the section and saved answers, the entries will be lost. This is why, sectional mock tests for CAT exam are important. They help in mastering the art of time-management.

Q:   From when should I start solving CAT mock test series?

A:
Ideally, candidates should start solving mock tests after completing the CAT syllabus. CAT exam is held in the last week of November and aspirants usually start exam preparation by March. Even if they start later than March, the syllabus is completed by August end. So, September is the ideal month to start solving CAT mock tests as it gives them over three months to attempt, analyse and assess their preparation level. Those who have appeared for the CAT before can directly start solving mock tests. Their motive should be to SEE if they are doing better than last year or not. If they are not, then they can go back to the topics that are posing challenge. They can study the chapters and practice mock tests simultaneously too as they do not have to start studying from scratch. Solve one CAT mock test in a day and analyse it in details. Check your accuracy level, time taken and knowledge of questions individually. It will help you in understanding which type of questions are easy for you and which are tough.

Q:   Is the structure of CAT mock test same as the actual exam?

A:
CAT mock tests are a replica of the actual CAT exam. It is so because the purpose of the mock test is to prepare the candidate for a speed based test which requires quick decision making and quick calculation with 100 per cent accuracy. This can be achieved only if the candidates has been in such an environment multiple times. In the CAT mock test, candidate has to solve equal number of questions as the CAT exam, in the same time limit. This, helps them in mastering the art of solving 66 questions in 120 minutes with much ease and confidence. The CAT mock tests have questions of same or higher difficulty level than the actual exam. In many unofficial mock tests, the questions are of previous CAT exams. Candidates must solve a variety of mock tests so that they are well versed with CAT questions of all types and varieties.

  1. You have already finished the basic materials required in all four areas of aptitude
  2. You have enrolled for a CAT Mock Test Series
  3. You have the knowledge of format of CAT 2024 including, number of sections, number of questions asked in history, time duration, colleges accepting their scores

How to use a CAT Mock Test Series?

You are advised to write approximately 20 mock CAT papers in next two months. Good percentiles are the outcome of aptitude skills and testing skills. 20 Mock CAT papers will help you optimize your score with the knowledge you have acquired. Spend one hour in analysis/introspection of learning from the test.

Every CAT mock test will help you understand your weak areas of aptitude and possible improvement in testing skills. Moreover, 20 should be a sufficient number of CAT mocks to develop appropriate stamina required to make best use of last two sections of the paper, as well.

Q:   Where can I get official CAT mock test?

A:

Official CAT mock test 2023 has been released. The website is: iimcat.ac.in. Candidates can access the official mock test at the official website and take a walk through of the CAT online test environment through it. The official CAT mock test is the replica of the actual CAT exam indicating the structure and pattern of the test for that year. The questions asked in the CAT mock test are of same difficulty level as the actual exam allowing candidates to get the experience of the actual test environment. Once the CAT Mock Test 2023 is live, aspirants must attempt it as part of their exam day preparation.

Q:   What is the best time to practice CAT mock test?

A:

Candidates should practice CAT mock test during the day. Once, CAT admit card is released, they should practice CAT mocks at the same time as their exam slot. This will help them align their mind and body to 2 hours of rigorous test so that they can utilize their time in the CAT exam well. For example, CAT exam starts are early as 8:30 am. So, those who are not used to studying early morning will face difficulty in performing optimally if they get morning slot.

Q:   How important are sectional mock tests for CAT preparation?

A:

CAT exam has sectional time limit of 40 minutes per section and as soon as the time gets over, the test screen moves to the new section. So, it is very important that a candidate uses 40 minutes to attempt the questions correctly and optimally. RC passages are long and dense. Sometimes, DI or LR questions turn out to be lengthy, Quants questions are often time taking. By practicing sectional mock tests, candidate will get the practice of how to manage 40 minutes irrespective of the type of question.

Q:   Is it wise to practice a CAT mock test, just before the exam?

A:

No, it is not wise to attempt a CAT mock test, just before the exam. Candidates must practice only one CAT mock test just before the exam; not to check his control over topics but to keep the confidence of time management high. Any candidate who has practiced a good number of mock tests will be able to score 98-99 percentile by the last week of the CAT exam, so they need to just go with the same confidence.

CAT Preparation 2024: How to improve Speed?

If accuracy is always the first target to be achieved while preparing for the MBA entrance exams, speed is the second. The continuous trade off between the two is experienced by all the aspirants. Practice of standard variety of questions enables you to solve many of them with minimum rough work. This certainly adds to speed in long run. Moreover, a good number of questions in Quantitative Aptitude are of standard set of varieties. More practice of such varieties increases the number of questions which look familiar while solving a test paper.

Regular practice helps you to develop more comfort with the topics and keep the stamina perfect even towards the end of the test. This ultimately gets you enough fuel to get more attempts and score in the last section.

CAT Preparation 2024: How to Make Reading Comprehension Stronger?

There is no alternative to Reading in CAT 2024 preparation. 24 per cent of the CAT question paper is made up of Reading Comprehension (RC) questions. It’s highly recommended that you solve RCs for at least an hour on the days you are not practicing mock tests. Find the areas of reading you are uncomfortable with. Read RCs related to such topics to increase comfort with them. Read on a variety of topics regularly. A 100-hour reading till CAT should take care of speed and accuracy in RCs in the actual test paper. Check out RC passages of last 10 years' CAT question papers. Practice those and similar passages.

How to Manage Form Filling of Various MBA Exams and Colleges?

That’s exactly your job in these two months before CAT 2024.

  • Keep analyzing your ongoing performance of Mock CATs. Envision where you can reach in two months.
  • Do basic research of colleges available through various MBA entrance exams and their cut offs
  • Depending on your probable range of percentiles, your interest of specialization and the cut offs of the colleges, prepare a list of MBA colleges and exams you should apply for
  • Manage a diary or an excel sheet of application deadlines of all these MBA colleges and entrance exams
  • Fill application forms of those MBA entrance exams before the deadline

How to Manage Other MBA Exams?

CAT kickstarts the MBA exam season. It is followed by SNAP, NMAT, IBSAT, MAT, XAT and CMAT. All of these exams are speed tests but have slightly different marking scheme and questions from CAT. It’s advisable that your planning includes writing at least three to four mock tests of each of these exams before taking them.

Overall, these two months would be the game changer. If you started late, going aggressive is the only option now. If you are on track, ensure that you don’t lose momentum for a single week.

All the Best..!!
