1 min readUpdated on Jul 20, 2021 11:45 IST

The National Centre for Geodesy (NCG) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) has started a short-term course in geodesy (the science of measuring the earth) for senior level Survey of India (SoI) officers who have been nominated by the Surveyor General of India. The two-week course began on July 19  and will continue till July 30.

The course will cover fundamental topics on geodesy such as space geodesy, adjustment computations and physical geodesy. Geodesy is the science of accurately measuring and understanding earth’s geometric shape, orientation in space and gravitational field.

The science of geodesy has applications in monitoring earthquake, volcanic, landslide, and weather hazard recognition and response; soil health, water resources, and drought surveillance; climate change, including monitoring the polar ice cover; oil spill clean-ups; GPS timing and autonomous vehicle development. Scientists, including geologists, meteorologists and oceanographers, use geodetics to better understand what is happening on, under and inside the earth.

Online course for 20 pariticipants

The course is being conducted online for 20 participants. The lectures will be delivered by Prof Onkar Dikshit, Prof B Nagarajan, and Prof Balaji Devaraju from the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur. The participants will be provided remote access to desktop machines at the NCG laboratory, where all necessary software is pre-installed. The NCG is the first of its kind in the country to support education and research in Geodesy. Alternatively, participants can also complete laboratory exercises on their computers if they wish to.
