Q:   What is the effectiveness of the placement cell for M.Sc. programs at IISER Thiruvananthapuram?

A:

Effectiveness of the Placement Cell for M.Sc. Programs at IISER Thiruvananthapuram

Based on the reviews and feedback from students and alumni, here's an overview of the effectiveness of the placement cell for M.Sc. programs at IISER Thiruvananthpuram:

* Limited Placement Opportunities: Many students mentioned that there is no dedicated placement cell, and students need to explore opportunities on their own. While some companies visit the campus for recruitments, the scope is limited, especially for M.Sc. students.
* Few Recruitments: According to some reviewers, only a handful of students get placed in industries, mostly in research-oriented organizations like Hindustan Unilever, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and Asian Paints.
* Ph.D. Route Dominant: Most students opt for higher studies, either in India or abroad, rather than entering the workforce immediately. This indicates that the primary focus of the institution is on preparing students for research careers.
* Placement Cell Still Developing: Although a new placement cell has been established, it seems to be in its early stages, and many students reported receiving limited support in securing jobs.
* Good Internship Opportunities: On the positive side, many students mentioned getting internships at renowned institutes like IITs, IISc, and foreign universities like Harvard, Stanford, and Max Planck.

In summary, while there are some limitations and challenges in terms of placement opportunities, IISER Thiruvananthpuram focuses mainly on preparing students for higher studies and research careers, with a smaller proportion opting for industrial placements.

Best institute for research.
Placements: IISER Thiruvananthapuram has a median salary package of 18 LPA. Top companies that recruit students are Adobe and TCS, as well as many research institutions. About 75% of students are placed for higher studies, and the remaining students are employed. Approximately 100% of the students get internships, and the top roles offered are scientist, research associate, and data scientist.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure at IISER TVM is very good. The Wi-Fi speed is 3 Gbps, the labs are well maintained, and construction of the library is ongoing. The hostel has good facilities, including double occupancy rooms with beds, study tables, and almirahs. The food is of good quality and overall the hostel is very hygienic.
Faculty: The teachers are well qualified. They all have Master's degrees and Ph.D.s from great universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and Stanford. The course curriculum is relevant, and the course is helpful for those who are interested in research, academia, and industry. The semester exams are easy if you study continuously. The overall pass percentage is 90-95%, and the subject-wise pass percentage is 80-90%.
Other: I chose this course because I wanted to learn data science as well as mathematics, and only IISER offers data science with research. From 2024 onwards, IITs started offering it, but I had to choose a college in 2023, so I chose IISER. The things that could be better at this college are the placement cell, the salary packages, the finance department, the coding clubs, and the entrepreneurship cell. There are many scholarships available.

Professors are really nice, they are well qualified and provide the best knowledge.
Placements: Students are eligible for the placement in their final year of the course. We have BS-MS, MSc, IPhD and PhD currently. Students from BS-MS are more likely to be placed. Though placement is less as students mostly go for research after masters. We have a placement cell that notifies about the opportunities in industries and academia. As my plans are to pursue a PhD after getting this degree, I never got interested in a placement opportunity.
Infrastructure: The room is too good; the balcony faces beautiful mountains, clouds and greenery. We got a cupboard mounted on the wall, a rack, a table, chair and bed in the room. Rooms are double-seater. We have washing machines in the hostel. Food is too good in both terms of quality and taste too. It's a student-organized mess and they always make sure to provide the best. Hostels are very affordable and the registration process was smooth along with the admission process. Matrons are very kind.
Faculty: I have a clear picture of what I want to pursue in the future. I really want to do research and that in chemistry. Choosing an MSc is the starting point of my career. And the course work is really good and the majority of that is relevant for GATE and CSIR NET also. Faculty-student ratio is good; we have a nice number of faculty (around 50) in the school of chemistry. The majority of the faculty have postdocs in their respective fields, and they are, no doubt, well qualified for the papers they teach. They use boards, digital boards and projectors to present the slides for better demonstration.

Professional behavior of Dr. Rajendra Kurapati of IISER TVM.
Placements: Only a few students from Physics or Math are given opportunities to work in companies and most of them apply for a Ph.D. The new placement cell that was set up in 2022 offers internship opportunities. The credentials of each student are the most important factor in them getting a Ph.D. position abroad. The titles of the institute, IISER, might not help if the student has low grades, and they must strive to keep their CGPA above 7.0 at least for a chance to get admitted into universities in the US. I felt that the average students (CGPA 7.5–8.5) in each department would get admitted to universities in the US with a QS rank of 300–900, which is pretty low. There is a high level of competition among students and achieving good grades is very difficult.
Infrastructure: The hostels had good facilities and were kept clean. There were problems with Wi-Fi connectivity in the past, but now new routers have been installed on every floor. The BSMS students reside in hostels that are located far away from the academic section and the rest of the campus and therefore accessibility to other places is limited.
Faculty: The professors are knowledgeable but the teaching quality depends on each professor. Some are good and some are not. If you want to pursue pure science, then this place is very good and has a good curriculum. I don't think it makes a student industry-ready, but it prepares them for Ph.D. applications. The exams are extremely competitive and students pass with a D grade. Depending on the course, the number of students who didn't pass could be around 20% for the toughest to 4% for the least toughest courses. Course difficulty depends on the professors; some give previous-year questions, some don't.
Other: The courses are affordable, and the crowd is alright, with extremely helpful seniors who don't rag or bully. There are some professors who display abusive behavior. For example, Dr. Rajendra Kurapati. I worked under this professor for a year and experienced instances where I was bullied, publicly humiliated, targeted and abused. I was harassed by a Ph.D. called Mahesh ML in this lab and the proof not only victim-blamed me but also gaslit me and tried to suppress me. He would have fits of range for the smallest of mistakes and always stir up drama. The Ph.D.s in the biomaterials lab are extremely gossipy and almost never talk about science. This lab was the worst in terms of a healthy work environment. The proof always engages in favoritism, where he assigns one student to get credit for many papers but bullies and lashes out at the rest of the people.

The companies offers stipends according to the work done by the students. The project are done according to the need of the companies. The internship provide you a experience of the industry.
Infrastructure: The annual fest is ENTHUZIA held typically in March. The Annual techfest is ARMAGEDDON which is a gaming fest more and tech fest less. The library has many facilities from accessing e resources to reading different kind of journals and thesis apart from regular book reading. As many as 15 clubs are there which are run by students and governed by Dean of student affairs. They have a great impact on students by reducing their academic pressure to an extent.
Faculty: The faculty-to-student ratio is very good. They also provided for the betterment of the students. The coordination between the students and teachers is very good. The teachers are very friendly. There is always a good interaction between the staff and students. The faculties are approachable every time when we want. There are various highly educated faculties in the college. There are various exams taken in the college. The exams are unit tests other than the in semester and end semester examinations.

IISER TVM - A beautiful place to pursue your scientific interests.
Placements: At IISER TVM (and generally across all IISERs), placements are not the primary focus. Students do not enroll here merely to secure a job, but to genuinely explore their passion and pursue a deep understanding of various scientific disciplines. While placements in Data Science are notable, not many students opt for direct placements. Most choose to pursue higher education, such as Ph.D. programs, after completing their BS-MS degrees. A significant number of students secure admissions in prestigious institutions both within India and internationally.
Infrastructure: The campus of IISER TVM is well-equipped with modern infrastructure. Free Wi-Fi is accessible everywhere on campus, including hostels, mess, academic blocks, and the library. Hostel accommodations are clean and spacious, with shared rooms (initially for 2 students, later increased to 3). Classrooms are primarily located in the Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), with capacities ranging from 250 to 300 students. Separate buildings exist for Physical, Chemical, and Biological Sciences, with another dedicated building under construction for Mathematical and Data Sciences. The library, though limited in physical books, offers a vast collection of e-books and online resources, including research papers and journals in various fields such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Data Sciences, Environmental Science, Economics, and Literature. The mess provides good quality food, and several affordable eateries within the campus offer a variety of options. The campus also has a 24x7 health center to cater to students' medical needs. Sports enthusiasts have numerous options, including volleyball courts, cricket nets, a football turf, an indoor stadium for badminton and table tennis, a basketball court, and dedicated grounds for football and cricket. Most sports facilities are equipped with professional coaches. For extra-curricular activities, there is a music room, a dance room, and a student recreation center.
Faculty: The faculty members at IISER TVM are highly qualified professionals who are approachable and friendly. The courses are designed to be flexible, preparing students to face competition in the scientific world. The grading system is fair, with multiple quizzes, one mid-semester exam, and one end-semester exam, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation.
