Shiksha: How was your day on June 9 when IIT Madras announced the result, what was yours and your family’s reaction?

Aditya: I was overjoyed and a bit overwhelmed. It was a moment of pure excitement and relief after years of hard work and dedication.

Shiksha: What motivated you to pursue engineering and thus appear for JEE Advanced 2024?

Aditya: From an early stage in my schooling, I had a strong inclination towards science, particularly Physics, which naturally led me to consider engineering. Knowing early on that I wanted to get into one of the Indian Institute of Technology, I was very clear about my goal. Consequently, I enrolled in the 4-year classroom program at FIITJEE Punjabi Bagh to systematically prepare for this path.

Q:   What will happen without ST caste validity Certificate at the time of JoSAA document verification?

A:
If you belong to the ST category and do not have a valid caste Certificate at the time of JoSAA document verification, you may face some challenges in the admission process. The ST category Certificate is one of the essential documents required for the admission process, and not having a valid Certificate may lead to the rejection of your admission application. In case you do not have the ST caste validity Certificate at the time of JoSAA document verification, you may be given a provisional admission subject to the condition that you provide the Certificate at a later date. However, the admission will only be confirmed after you submit the valid Certificate. It is advisable to obtain the ST caste validity Certificate well in advance before the admission process to avoid any last-minute hassles. You can apply for the Certificate at the designated authorities in your state, and the process may take some time, so it is recommended to initiate the process as early as possible.

Q:   Should I take a drop for JEE Advanced?

A:
If you feel that you are not fully prepared for JEE Advanced and need more time to study and improve your skills, then taking a drop and preparing again can be a good option. This will give you more time to focus on your weaknesses, take additional coaching classes or online courses, and practice solving more problems. On the other hand, if you feel that you have prepared well and are confident about your abilities, then appearing for JEE Advanced this year may be the right decision for you. It is important to weigh the benefits and risks of each option and consider factors such as your academic goals, financial situation, and personal circumstances. Ultimately, the decision to take a drop or appear for JEE Advanced should be based on your individual situation and goals, and it is advisable to seek guidance from a trusted mentor or advisory to help you make an informed decision.

Q:   What is the JEE Advanced tie breaking policy?

A:

If the JEE Advanced aggregate marks scored by two or more candidates are the same, then the following tie-break policy will be used for awarding ranks: Step 1: Candidates having higher positive marks will be awarded higher rank. If the tie breaking criterion at Step 1 fails to break the tie, then the following criterion at Step 2 will be followed. Step 2: Higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Mathematics. If this does not break the tie, higher rank will be assigned to the candidate who has obtained higher marks in Physics. If there is a tie even after this, candidates will be assigned the same rank.

Shiksha: Can you walk us through your study routine and JEE Advanced 2024 preparation strategies?

Aditya: My study routine and preparation for JEE Advanced 2024 revolved around effective time management. I had a solid foundation in Mathematics and Science from an early age, which helped me grasp advanced concepts quickly. Participation in Olympiads and competitive exams further honed my problem-solving abilities and time management skills. My approach involved dedicating six hours each day to self-study for JEE Advanced, with flexibility depending on various factors. For instance, on holidays, I extended my study time, while on school test days, I prioritized productive study sessions. To maintain focus and productivity, I took a five-minute break after every hour of studying. Even during the exam, I aimed to attempt all questions, without categorizing them and tackled them in chronological order, fundamentally.

Shiksha: Can you share any strategies for balancing exam preparation with other commitments or responsibilities like board exams and school?

Aditya: Create a detailed JEE Advanced study plan allocating time for each subject and topic based on weightage and difficulty. Schedule regular revisions and practice mock tests to identify areas needing improvement. Prioritize time management and self-study. Maintain perseverance and faith in yourself, analyzing test results for improvement. Develop examination temperament and seek guidance from teachers. Focus on understanding basic concepts, solve problems regularly, and stick to your study schedule. Stay motivated, and resilient, and don't hesitate to ask for help when needed.

Shiksha: How did you maintain focus and discipline throughout your preparation period?

Aditya: To maintain focus and discipline during my preparation period, I allocated time for activities I enjoyed, such as reading beyond textbooks and taking walks in the park to refresh my mind and rejuvenate my spirit. While consistency in studies posed a challenge, the guidance provided by my mentors at FIITJEE enabled me to stay focused and disciplined throughout the preparation period.

Shiksha: Were there any specific challenges you encountered during your preparation? How did you overcome them?

Aditya: Study, study, study, so sometimes you feel like living a monotonous life, although during preparation that’s our only job to do, but still sometimes it is hard to manage the jungle of questions. The pressure to perform well was immense. Regular exercise, meditation, and short breaks helped me stay calm and focused. Certain topics were particularly challenging. I tackled them by seeking help from the FIITJEE Faculty and practising extensively. Staying consistent with my studies was hard. Setting small, achievable goals and rewarding myself upon completion kept me motivated. Constant support from my parents and teachers helped me overcome challenges.

Shiksha: Were there any resources or study materials that you found particularly helpful for JEE Advanced?

Aditya: For the JEE Advanced and Physics Olympiad, I found "Krotov" to be an excellent book for JEE Advanced. The FIITJEE study material was my primary resource and proved to be the best for my preparation. The FIITJEE curriculum is meticulously designed to comprehensively cover the JEE Advanced syllabus. Regular tests and quizzes played a crucial role in assessing my understanding of each topic. The All-India Test series was very helpful in evaluating and analyzing my performance at the national level. Furthermore, the faculty at FIITJEE was exceptionally supportive and always available to clarify any doubts I had.

Shiksha: Which IIT and course are you pursuing?

Aditya: My dream is to take Computer Science at either IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi because it aligns closely with my interests and aspirations.

Shiksha: What role did practice tests or mock exams play in your IIT JEE preparation?

Focus on building a solid understanding of basic concepts. Regularly solve problems and take mock tests to improve your speed and accuracy. Create a study schedule and stick to it, balancing all subjects. Stay motivated and don't get discouraged by setbacks. Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance from teachers they are best.
