Q:   What minimum marks are required in JEE Advanced to get a seat in IITs?

A:

It's difficult to predict the minimum marks required to get selected in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in JEE Advanced as it depends on various factors such as the difficulty level of the exam, the number of students appearing for the exam, and their performance. However, to give you an idea, the minimum marks required to get selected in the IITs vary from year to year and also differ based on the category of the candidate. In general, the cutoff marks for the general category candidates range between 80-90 marks out of 360, while for the reserved categories, it may range from 45-70 marks out of 360. It's important to note that the cutoff marks are just an indication, and the actual cutoffs may vary depending on the factors mentioned above. It's always advisable to aim for a high score in the JEE Advanced exam to increase your chances of getting selected in the IITs.

Q:   What is the total number of seats in IITs?

A:

In 2024, the IITs are offering a total of 17,740 seats across various courses and categories through JEE Advanced 2024. With 48,248 candidates qualifying for IIT admissions this year, the number of aspirants exceeds the available IIT seats by almost threefold.

Compared to the previous year, the number of seats in the IITs has increased by 355 seats. Among the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, IIT Kharagpur leads with 1,899 seats, followed by IIT BHU with 1,589 seats, IIT Bombay with 1,368 seats, IIT Roorkee with 1,353 seats, and IIT Kanpur with 1,210 seats.

On What Factors the Demand of a Course in the IITs Depend?

As per the AISHE report, the core engineering branches are still the most popular choices among engineering candidates. Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering are the top 5 engineering streams with the maximum number of enrollments at the undergraduate level over the past few years. But, slowly this trend is declining. With Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) entering our everyday lives the demands for streams like computer science, Data Science, AI, etc have increased. The same is evident as per the date above.

Steadily, the engineering streams that are growing in popularity are Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Agriculture Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering. One of the major factors of demand for a course among the candidates is the job market.  Also, as per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report, Computer Engineering is one of the most popular engineering streams.

Factors that define the demand for a course are:

  • Job prospects
  • Career scope
  • Placements
  • Future prospects
  • Salary prospects
  • Interest of the candidate
