IITs Cutoff FAQs

Q. What is the cutoff rank in IITs for CS?

A. IITs offer admission to various BTech courses based on JEE Advanced scores followed by the centralised JoSAA Counselling. JoSAA Counselling is conducted round-wise across various categories. Based on competitive ranks, BTech in Computer Science Engineering can be considered the most popular course amongst the students aspiring for IITs. Tabulated below are the Round 1 and the Last Round closing ranks for JoSAA 2023 cutoff for the top five IITs for the General category candidates for All India Quota:

Q. What is the basis for the IIT cutoff?

A. IIT cutoff for BTech, BArch, Integrated BTech and BSc courses is based on JEE Main ranks, followed by JEE Advanced. The final selection of candidates is done based on round-wise JoSAA Counselling. JoSAA Counselling is generally conducted up to six rounds for IITs. Every year the cutoff for IITs varies based on several factors including, the total count of students who have appeared for the exam, the difficulty level of the JEE Main and JEE Advanced, the total number of seats available in the IIT across categories through All India Quota.

Depending on the aforementioned factors, IIT cutoff may witness an increase or a decline in their cutoff ranks.

Q. IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi, which one is better for Computer Science (CS)?

A. Both IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay are considered as the top Engineering colleges. Getting admission to either of the IITs requires a lot of hard work. The first and foremost criterion for IITs is to meet the cutoff. Seen from a perspective of cutoff, only the candidates, who qualify for JEE Advanced and meet the cutoff are eligible for admission to these IITs. As per the NIRF Ranking 2023, IIT Delhi stands at 2, whereas IIT Bombay stands at 3. Tabulated below are the round-wise closing ranks for IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay cutoff offered through JoSAA Counselling for General All India candidates:

Analysing the closing ranks for IIT Bombay, the cutoff ranged between 66 and 67, whereas for IIT Delhi the cutoff ranged between 104 and 105. On analysing the round-wise cutoff, IIT Bombay can be considered more competitive for BTech CSE as compared to IIT Delhi.

Q. What's the safe score, CRL rank, and category rank for an OBC student to get an EE branch in the top 7 IITs?

Apart from the General category, IITs offer admission to various other categories including OBC, SC, ST, PwD and EWS as well. As per the last three years, the safe score for the top 7 IITs for BTech EE as per JoSAA R1 seat allotment for OBC-All India Quota is mentioned as follows:

  • For IIT Madras, it must range between 427 and 513
  • For IIT Delhi, it must range between 355 and 449
  • For IIT Bombay it must range between 268 and 349
  • For IIT Kanpur it must range between 659 and 716
  • For IIT Roorkee it must range between 917 and 983
  • For IIT Kharagpur it must range between 772 and 831
  • For IIT Hyderabad  it must range between 937 and 1039

Q. Why are cut-offs for BTech + MTech dual degree courses less than those for only BTech, for any stream in general at IITs?

A. IITs offer BTech as well as 5-year Integrated BTech courses in the field of Engineering. The cutoff for only BTech and Integrated BTech varies on a large scale because of the demand for the courses. The ranks of only BTech courses are more competitive than the five-year integrated BTech courses because of the high demand of the course. Candidates who have passed Class 12 look for the UG BTech courses only as they are not sure of what to pursue for PG. It is because of the low demand that the five-year Integrated courses have less competition as compared to BTech for any other stream for the General category students.

  • +4 ONLY if (all) the correct option (s) is (are) chosen
  • +3 If all four options are correct but ONLY three options are chosen
  • +2 If three or more options are correct but ONLY two options are chosen, both of
    which are correct
