About Genetic Engineering

Genetic engineering is also known as genetic modification. It is a process in which laboratory-based technologies are used to alter the DNA makeup of an organism. This process may involve changing a single base pair (A-T or C-G), deleting a region of DNA, or adding a new segment of DNA. In genetic engineering, a gene from one species to an organism is added from a different species to produce a desired trait. It has been applied to the production of cancer therapies, brewing yeasts, genetically modified plants and livestock, etc.

Over the years, genetic engineering has changed; that is, from cloning for analysis and laboratory use to truly synthetic biology for understanding and new biomedical capabilities.

Genetic engineering techniques have led to the production of medically important products like human insulin, human growth hormone, and hepatitis B vaccine, and also to the development of genetically modified organisms like disease-resistant plants.

Genetic Engineering Courses

The course is studied at the graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Genetic engineering is one of the newest fields of engineering that deals with the manipulation of DNA and genes of an organism via biotechnology. Due to the advancement in biotechnology and the interest of scientists in genetic engineering, the course has been studied in almost every major science university. On the other hand, the B.Sc in Genetics or B.Tech in Genetic Engineering course deals with various types of problems related to the medical field, including the human genome and agriculture. Genetic Engineering as an elective course is also offered in various institutes to study B.Tech Biotechnology programmes. Also, genetic engineering has done some groundbreaking research in the field of agriculture and was also one of the important factors in the green revolution.

Genetic Engineering Course: Required Skillset

It is basically not a theoretical field but is highly practical and has a very high demand for professionals who are not only good in the academic part but also have the ability to handle the practical aspect of the field. Check below some of the skills that are demanded in the field of genetic engineering are:

- Patience is important as several techniques and methodologies that are involved in genetic engineering require substantial amounts of time and precision. A candidate should be able to perform these techniques without any errors.

Genetic Engineering Course: How is a B.Tech (Genetic Engineering) course different from a B.Sc in Genetics?

- Firstly, the duration of a B.tech course is 4 years and a B.Sc in genetics is 3 years.

- Admission to the B.Sc in genetics is based on 12th class marks; on the other hand, admission to the B.Tech in genetic engineering is based on entrance test scores.

- Fees in B.Sc as compared to B.tech are less.

- The curriculum of B.Sc in genetics consists of traditional methods of breeding of characters and the study of principles of modern techniques. On the other hand, B.tech in genetic engineering includes the study of the application of genetic engineering in various sectors in day-to-day life. The B.tech in genetic engineering consists of more of the engineering aspects of genetics.

- The scope of the job is higher after pursuing graduation in B.Tech in genetic engineering and the salary trend is also larger as compared to that of graduation in B.Sc in gnetics.

- The B.Sc. in Genetics is a general science course, whereas the B.Tech in Genetic Engineering comes under one of the engineering courses.
