Marine Engineering: Top Entrance Exams

In marine engineering, several exams are conducted by universities at national and university level for UG and PG degree courses. Some of the top entrance exams for admission to marine engineering are provided below. Admissions to some institutes may also be based on merit. One thing to be noted here is that the selection process might vary from college to college. The main selection process for admissions to Marine Engineering courses involves two steps:

- Admissions solely based on the candidates' entrance exams or/and

- Releasing a merit list based on a candidate’s performance in the entrance exam and their qualifying exam.

This is followed by group discussion (GD), personal interview (PI), psychometric test, or medical examination depending on the institute one is applying for. Some colleges also offer admissions via direct entry.

Some of the popular exams for marine engineering are:

For UG Level

IMUCET

JEE Main

JEE Advanced

TMISAT

HIMT Entrance exam

Generally, the syllabus for the above given exams include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and English.

For PG Level

One of the most popular exams for admissions to marine engineering programmes at the PG level is GATE. Though there is no separate exam for ME in GATE, interested applicants can opt for GATE papers such as Electrical Sciences or Mechanical Engineering.

In GATE, all the papers will have a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks. Of those, 10 questions out of a total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA). The paper comprises Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), which carry 1 or 2 marks each, as well as Numerical Answer Questions, also carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.

Marine Engineering: Course Curriculum

In marine engineering, the curriculum focuses on the construction, manufacturing, designing, and gaining in-depth knowledge of machines of sea-related engines. During the course, students will learn about all the insights of ships; how they function; the types of machines used; the process of manufacturing, all engines associated with ship making; the installation of the harbour; and more.

The course is more practical in nature. Students participate in generating small micro-machines for different machine-making projects. This course in marine engineering makes an individual capable of performing in the local and international shipping industry.

The main aim of the marine engineering course is to ensure that the subjects that were studied during the course develop all of the related concepts, processes, research, and practicals that are necessary to develop a better scope for the future.

Marine Engineering: Career and Upcoming Trends

The marine engineering course has a wide range of future scope in the fields of seaports and seacraft sector job profiles. Nowadays, with the rising importance of preserving marine life and the need to mitigate marine pollution, employment opportunities for individuals with marine-related courses are valued for helping them in the sustainable balancing of the marine ecosystem by using non-toxic ship oils and resorting to solar energy as their source of power generation, which are friendly to the sea.

Professionals in marine engineering also have a scope in this field with their skills in machinery management, manufacturing and monitoring. They can also work on navy ships as navy personnel or officers, mechanical ship generators, ship managers, port managers, maintenance engineers, and much more in government and private shipping and ports.

Marine engineering courses usually offer a high-paying starting salary as they deal with high-in-depth knowledge of technology and engineering.

Upcoming Trends

From time to time, new trends and topics are introduced with the rise in technology and the need for machine making in the study of marine engineering. Because the course focuses on seacraft and all mechanical works associated with seaports, the topics that are introduced are up to date and also in the subjects and practises of the course.

The main focus of the topics related to marine engineering highlights the involvement of robots and the use of solar and wind power in the manufacturing of ships and management of ports. Heavy machines are cared for in engineering work, and support machines in the form of robots are required to fulfil the work requirements and management of ships and ports for the construction or installation of machines.

Therefore, the main aim includes concepts and the use of robotic technologies in the management of seaports and sea crafts.

Marine Engineering: Job Profiles and Top Recruiters

As per the reports, marine engineer employment and naval architect employment is expected to grow 12% from 2016 to 2026, which is faster than the average for all occupations. The jobs of marine engineers are land-based in shipping firms, the Indian Navy, shipyards, engine manufacturing companies, shipbuilding firms, ship design firms, maritime universities, research institutions etc.

Check below some of the types of job profiles that marine engineers can expect to bag after completing the course.
