1. National Technology Institute, Srinagar

One of the top engineering colleges in Jammu and Kashmir has to be NIT. Spread in an area of 67-acre, the college was established in the year 1960 and is located at Hazratbal in Srinagar. 

Entrance exam: Admissions to various postgraduate and undergraduate programs are done through national level examinations entrance exams. For instance, if you want to pursue UG courses, you need to qualify and secure a good rank in JEE Mains.

Courses: NIT, being one of the top engineering colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, offers full-time B.Tech in IT, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical, Communication & Electronics, Electrical, Computer Science, Civil and Chemical Engineering. 

Fees: The tuition fee per semester is Rs 62,500. This amount increases to Rs 70,900 (inclusive of all other charges).

Placements: All these years, the CS department has recorded 100 percent placements, core branches inclusive of mechanical, electrical, ECE and Civil have had 80-90 percent placements. Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering branches secure 40-50 percent placements. The highest package offered has been INR 72 LPA. One of the students got a salary package of INR 28 LPA.

2. Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET)

GCET is one of the top B.tech colleges in Jammu and Kashmir. Itis a reputed institution under state government’s aegis. Established in 1994, the college is affiliated to the Jammu University. The college is located at Jammu’s canal road while the new campus is also located at the 869 Kanals area land in Jammu in Chak Bhalwal and nearby Amb Ghrota. It is 25 kilometre away from the campus of the old university.

Entrance Exam: To make it to the best engineering colleges in Jammu and Kashmir such as GCET, you need to secure a good rank in JKCET (Jammu and Kashmir Common Entrance Test). Applications are submitted through BOPEE J&K website.

Courses: Courses offered by GCET are Electrical, computer, communication and electronics, mechanical and civil engineering.

Fees: For B.Tech programme, GCET charges Rs 74,730. In the first year, you have to pay Rs 20,580 and for the rest of the years, the amount is confined to Rs 18,050.

Placements: Many software companies visit the campus. Some big names are CTS, Wipro and TCS. Students can easily bag jobs with a package of INR 4-5 LPA.

3. Model Institute of Engineering and Technology

Model Institute of Engineering and Technology was established in 1998. An AICTE-approved institute, MIET is affiliated to the Jammu University. It is the first college to file for technical patents. It is located at Balwal in J&K.

Entrance exams: Admission for B.Tech is done on the basis of score you have obtained in JKCET, an exam which JKBOPEE conducts every year.

Courses: Courses offered are B.Tech in Civil, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication and Computer Science and Engineering.

Fee: The course fee is around Rs 60,000. Total amount inclusive of all charges is Rs 1.9 lakh. 

Placements: MIET’s placement division is active and students have been placed in their final/pre-final semesters in some reputed companies. The highest package offered was INR 3.8 LPA while the average package offered is close to INR 2.4 LPA.
