The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducted All India Bar Examination (AIBE) 14 on September 15, 2019, in more than 40 test cities across India. The exam was held in pen-paper based test mode for a duration of three hours i.e. 10 am to 1 pm. Candidates with physical disability and blindness were given 20 minutes extra to attempt the examination. AIBE question paper carried 100 multiple-choice questions based on 19 law subjects and it was available in 11 languages for candidates’ suitability.

AIBE is an open book exam, which means candidates have carried study material including books, previous years solved papers as well as hand notes to attempt the examination. As per AIBE cut off criteria, candidates need to obtain at least 40% marks to clear the exam, if they belong to General/ OBC category and, at least 35% marks if belonging to SC/ ST category.

AIBE 2019 Paper Analysis and Student Reviews

Gaurav Tiwari enrolled with Delhi Bar Council, shared that AIBE question paper was a bit confusing because many questions were based on landmark judgements that candidates were not able to solve. However, with the help of magazines, internet research ( done while preparing for the examination) he could recall the popular cases and attempt the questions easily. He said, the trickiest part was to find the sub-sections of the topics but overall the question paper was good.

Chirag Gupta who is enrolled with Delhi State Bar Council shared that the question paper was of moderate level. However, the majority of the questions were based on case studies, and he carried a bag of books for attempting the exam. He said, his practising six sets of previous years papers to understand the exam pattern and syllabus proved helpful as 18 questions were from the previous years' papers.

Another candidate, Shivani also enrolled with Delhi State Bar Council, shared that the paper was as expected and, similar to previous years. Like other candidates, she also brought a bag of books including Bare Act, which was accessible for the majority of the question paper, and commentaries for evidence, institution, administrative law that proved helpful in attempting case laws questions. She added there were a few tricky questions but these were attemptable with cognitive skills.

Hritik, who is enrolled with the Bar Council of Jammu and Kashmir shared that the question paper was somewhat difficult. In addition, the question paper must have been easy for those candidates who are practising law or are involved in some sort of legal work. However, for recently graduated candidates, it would have been difficult to attempt the paper by finding answers in the books. He feels BCI has designed AIBE Question Paper from lawyers’ prospects and not from students’ viewpoint.

Virendra Sharma associated with Delhi State Bar Council said, ‘AIBE 2019 question paper was a good mix of the Law subjects including Hindu Marriage Act, Muslim Marriage Act, case studies from popular cases of India, and also some recent law cases from Supreme Court of India'. He said the question paper was completely from AIBE Syllabus and, since only 40% is the passing criteria and no negative marking is done in case of wrong attempts, therefore it is easy to clear the exam.

Prashant Singh Gaurav, who appeared for AIBE 14 at this test centre is associated with Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh and had recently graduated from National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi (NLU Ranchi). He said the exam was easy and all the questions asked in the exam were related to the syllabus only. He added the question paper carried case studies latest as well as old, landmark questions which he was able to solve with study material including Bare Act. Moreover, the exam pattern was well defined including the sections, meaning, as well as internal conflicts between the sections.

Another candidate pointed out that the question paper carried too many judgements based questions which were neither mentioned in the syllabus nor heard of. Besides, it was difficult to find answers from the study material. He also expressed that even though the AIBE application fee is too high, the exam centre did not provide even the basic facilities like water bottles.
