What is a Certificate of Practice for lawyers? After the Bar Council of India issues the Certificate of Practice to all AIBE qualified candidates so that they can continue their legal practice. The Bar Council of India has mandated all lawyers to obtain a Certificate of Practice (COP) within two years of provisional enrollment. Only those advocates who will qualify for the All India Bar Examination will be issued COP to continue practising in the court of law in India. The process of obtaining AIBE COP begins as soon as a person enrolls with their respective state bar council on a provisional basis. Lawyers have to fill Bar Council of India registration form 2024 for Bar Council of India certificate download. The BCI will conduct the AIBE 19 Exam Dates 2024 on December 22, 2024. However, it is expected that AIBE 19 will be conducted in September. AIBE 18 Result 2023 was released on March 26, 2024 on the official AIBE website, allindiaexamination.com. AIBE 18 (VIII) COP was released on August 27, 2024.

Q:   Are Bare Acts allowed in AIBE 19 (XIX) 2024?

A:

Yes, Bare Acts will be allowed in the AIBE examination. All India Bar Examination website stated that " Bare Acts without notes are allowed. In case of unavailability of Bare Acts without notes, Bare Acts with least short notes will be allowed subject to the discretion of the Examiner/Invigilator".

Candidates were not allowed to carry books, any electronic items to the exam centre. AIBE is no more an open-book exam. The exam was held in 50+ cities across the country.

Q:   What is AIBE 19 (XIX) Exam Date?

A:

AIBE 19 Exam 2024 date has been revised. The AIBE Exam 2024 will be held on December 22, 2024. Only those candidates who are enrolled with any state bar council are eligible to apply. AIBE 19 Exam will be conducted in 11 regional languages including english. The AIBE Exam 2024 will be conducted in offline, pen-and-paper mode acorss the country.

Q:   How to get previous years papers for AIBE 2024?

A:
Earlier, the exam authority provided the question paper of AIBE English language) on the official website. However, after vernacular languages have been included in the question paper, the exam authority no longer uploads the question paper on the official website of AIBE. Rather, it is available only with those who attempt the examination. Candidates who take the examination are only able to view it when raising objections on it at the time of answer keys objection process. Candidates can, however, obtain previous years papers for AIBE as available on Shiksha website - https://www.shiksha.com/law/aibe-exam-question-papers The question papers available here are official papers as collected from the past 3-4 years. What is COP?

The Certificate of Practice commonly known as COP is a written permission or license given to advocates so they can practice the legal profession in India. From 2009-2010 onwards, candidates are required to obtain COP from their state bar councils after they have qualified AIBE. Candidates must qualify AIBE within two years of their provisional enrollment, or they will have to renew their enrollment with the state bar council and appear in next session of the bar examination. Since there is no limit on number of attempts one can make to take AIBE, candidates can appear until they qualify it as per the minimum qualifying marks. All candidates obtaining above minimum marks will be considered as qualified/ Pass, and those who are not able to secure the minimum marks will have to take next session of AIBE. Those who qualify AIBE will be able to obtain the COP as mentioned below.

How to obtain COP from State Bar Council?

Earlier, the Bar Council of India released a notification for all the qualified candidates informing them about the availability of COP at the state bar councils. Candidates then would obtain the COP by visiting their respective state bar council. In 2021, the bar council launched a mobile application AIBESCOPE so that candidates can obtain a digital copy of their COP until a hard copy is provided to them. Now, candidates have to fill and submit an application form as available either on the official website or on the official address of the state bar council. 

Q:   Is there any dress code for AIBE exam?

A:

No, Bar Council of India has not prescribed any dress code for this examination. However, candidates are expected to wear comfortable clothing on the day of the examination. Candidates are advised to read all the guidelines mentioned on the AIBE 2024 admit card carefully so that there is no hassles at last moment at exam centre. Candidates are advised to arrange important documents to be carried at the centre in advance. AIBE 2024 Exam wil be held in pen-paper based mode.

Q:   When is the next AIBE exam in 2024?

A:

The next AIBE exam in 2024 will be AIBE 19 (XIX). The Bar Council of India (BCI) released the official notification for the exam on August 24, 2024. The AIBE 19 exam will be conducted on December 22, 2024. AIBE (All India Bar Examination) is a certification exam that assesses an advocate’s capability to practice law in India. Q:   What are the important subjects for AIBE 2024?

AIBE question paper will carry 100 objective-type questions, however, there are some subjects with higher weightage over the others, For example Constitutional Law, Criminal Procedure Code, and Civil Procedure Code will carry 10 questions each. While IPC, Indian Evidence ACT Family Law, Law of Contracts, SRA, NIA, will carry 8 marks each. Q:   Has BCI released list of AIBE 2024 test centres?

A:

Yes, BCI has released the list of AIBE XIX 2024 test centres. The test centres list has been released along with the official AIBE 19 Notification. Candidates have to provide choice for AIBE 2024 centre while applying for the exam. A maximum of three options can be declared for exam city choice. BCI provide the exam centre to candidate along with the admit card for AIBE 2024. Once allotted, candidates request to change the exam centre will not entertained.

Q:   When will AIBE 18 be held?

A:

The Bar Council of India (BCI) conducted All India Bar Examination 2023 on December 10, 2023. Candidates who could not qualify AIBE exam earlier, could appear in the 18th session of BCI exam. They can get all important updates regarding AIBE XVIII exam dates and events on this page. Candidates who will qualify the bar examination of India, will be issued Certificate of Practice. AIBE XVII (17) COP was released on December 7. AIBE XVI (16) were issued 'Certificate of Practice' on March 30, 2022. Candidates can obtain COP by downloading AIBESCOPE, a mobile application from Playstore or iOS store. AIBE XVII (18) qualified candidates are expected to get their COP once the result is announced.

Steps to fill Application to obtain COP from State Bar Council

Step 1: Download or obtain the COP application form from the respective State Bar Council Website or address.     

Step 2: Fill the Application Form completely with respect to academic qualification, bar council enrollment, and AIBE qualifying status

Step 3: Submit the Enrollment form with the required documents and required fee

Attach the undermentioned documents: 

  • AIBE Result Copy
  • Academic Qualification Documents
  • Three passport size  photographs (colour and recent)
  • The SC/ST applicants should also submit valid caste certificate issued by the competent authority 
  • Other certificates, photographs, declarations and documents as per Application Form

The application fee for all state bar councils varies, and are subject to change every year. Therefore, candidates are requested to get the application form along with latest fee.

How to enroll with State Bar Councils for AIBE exam?

The online registrations for AIBE exam began on August 16, 2023. The last date to fill AIBE 18 Application Form 2023 was on or before November 16, 2023. Qualifying AIBE is mandatory for law graduates to earn the right to practice in a court of law in India. Qualified candidates will then be issued the Certificate of Practice (CoP). But to apply for the AIBE exam, the candidate needs to be registered as an advocate with their respective state bar councils. 

Since the registration process is done at a state level, the mode of registration may vary. For example, advocates in the state of Chattisgarh have to go to the Bar Council Office in person and get registered. However, the bar councils of Karnataka, Maharashtra and a few other states have online registration options available for advocates.

Is AIBE qualification mandatory for candidates who have passed graduation before 2000-2010?

In case the candidate has passed the 3-year or 5-year LLB program before 2009-2010, they aren’t required to qualify the AIBE exam to practice in a court of law.

  • Advocates Act, 1961 - The act gives the state councils the right to frame their own rules for advocate enrollment.
