AILET Marks vs Rank: Key Differences

Understanding the distinction between marks and rank is essential for AILET aspirants:

Q:   What is AILET 2024 Cutoff?

A:

National Law University (NLU) Delhi released the AILET 2024 cutoff during the counselling and seat allotment. The outcome was released on the basis of the All India Merit Rank released by NLU Delhi. The AILET 2024 exam was conducted on December 10, 2023. The actual cutoff was released by NLU Delhi at the time of AILET 2024 seat allotment. The cut-off for AILET 2024 was released separately for the BA LLB and LLM programs.

Q:   Is AILET cutoff for all categories the same?

A:

No, AILET Entrance Exam cutoff is released separately for the various categories. For instance, the cut-off is available for categories like Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PH categories. Note that open category candidates will not be considered for admission under reserved category seats. However, candidates belonging to reserved category will be considered for admission under both open and the reserved category they belong to. To be considered for admission under reserved category, the candidate must furnish the required category certificates. However, any candidate who is found using counterfeit documents can be disqualified at any stage of the admission process.

Q:   How is the AILET score and percentile/rank calculated?

A:
Hi there, The process of calculation of rank is very simple as it depends on the marks you obtained in the AILET exam. Each question carries 1 mark and makes it a total of 150 marks. Now, the candidate scoring the topmost marks are given the ranks accordingly. Also the no. of seats make the ranks as well. The seats are also reserved and thus seats have to be distributed accordingly. Also, there may be candidates scoring same marks thus they share the same rank jointly. Also the exam is taken only for NLU Delhi thus there is no preference list as such and the candidates are given the seats based on their ranks. Also, a candidate leaving the seat shall make a vacancy for the waitlisted candidates. AiLET initially releases the provisional allotment list and waitlist. Apart from this, there is no formula as to calculate the ranks. Your marks define your rank and seat at NLU Delhi.
  • Marks: Marks refer to the total number of correct answers a candidate secures in the AILET exam. The number of marks will directly depend on how well a candidate performs in the different sections, which include English, Logical Reasoning, Legal Reasoning, General Knowledge, and Mathematics.
  • Rank: The rank is a reflection of a candidate's performance relative to others. A candidate with higher marks is likely to achieve a better (lower) rank. However, the rank is not determined solely by the total marks but also by factors such as the difficulty level of the exam and the overall performance of all candidates.

In general, while the marks give a direct indication of a candidate’s performance in the exam, the rank positions them within the competitive pool and determines their eligibility for admission.

  • Total Marks: The higher the total marks a candidate secures, the better their chances of achieving a top rank. However, the marks alone do not guarantee admission, as the rank is the deciding factor in final selection.
  • Tie-Breaking Criteria: If two candidates secure the same marks, certain tie-breaking rules are applied. These include:

   - The candidate with higher marks in the Legal Reasoning section.

   - If the tie persists, the candidate with a higher score in General Knowledge is prioritised.

   - Further, the age of the candidate can be used as a tie-breaker, with the older candidate being given preference.

  • Category Reservation: Seats are reserved for candidates from different categories (SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD, etc.), and the merit list will also reflect these reservations. Candidates falling under the reserved categories will have a separate merit list based on their category-specific cutoff.
  • Normalisation Process: Since AILET is a highly competitive exam with many candidates taking it, normalization methods may be used to ensure fairness in the ranking process, especially if the exam is held in multiple shifts or under varying conditions.
