A lot of people believe COVID-19 vaccination should be made mandatory for going out in crowded places. We asked CAT 2021 aspirants that whether it is a good idea to make vaccination mandatory to appear for the exam.
CAT 2021 and COVID-19 vaccination - India has recently recovered from the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic and preparing for its third wave to hit soon. Some experts are predicting that the third wave will hit India in October while some are of the opinion that it may hit sooner (by August-September). The Delta variant of the virus has already been detected in a few states. At the same time, COVID-19 vaccination programme has caught speed and till today (June 28) over 32 crore people have been vaccinated in India.

A lot of conversation is being heard around vaccination as a mandatory criterion for travelling, reopening of offices and conducting business operations. In fact, Rajasthan has issued a regulation making it mandatory for people to have at least one dose of vaccine to enter public places from June 28. Similarly, Goa has made it mandatory for travelers to be inoculated with both doses of the vaccine.
Since, it has been proven that the person vaccinated with COVID-19 vaccine is better protected from the virus, vaccination is gradually acquiring the status of a free pass to move in public places. This brings us to the question that whether vaccination will become a requirement to appear for entrance exams like CAT too? Since, CAT is an MBA entrance exam and the age of candidates is 20+, it is quite likely that by the CAT 2021 exam day (November 28), a large percentage of aspirants will be inoculated already. But should COVID vaccination be a criterion for CAT 2021? We spoke to a few CAT exam aspirants to know their opinion.
Should COVID vaccination be a criterion for CAT 2021? What candidates said
Ranjan Kapoor from Delhi who is preparing for CAT 2021 said, “yes, making COVID vaccination mandatory for CAT aspirants is a good idea as it will instill confidence in us to go out and take the exam at exam centres. Since, the third wave is imminent and speculated to hit India by October, it will be better if we are vaccinated for the exam.”
Anisha from Kolkata, who appeared in CAT exam last year said, “I am going to take CAT again this year. Although, we appeared for CAT last year when there was no vaccine, making vaccination mandatory, at least the first dose, is a good idea as I had seen some of my peers getting paranoid over safety measures at the exam centre because of which they could not focus on the exam.”
Mohit Singh from Patna has a different opinion. He said, “vaccination should not be mandatory for the CAT exam. What if some candidates fail to get vaccinated by the exam day. If they will not be allowed to take the exam due to that, their hard work of one whole year will be wasted.”
Sudeep Bahl from Delhi echoed the same sentiment. “Making vaccination mandatory is not a good idea when a lot of exams are being conducted successfully by following COVID-19 safety guidelines. In fact, the CAT exam should be conducted in remote proctored method for the safety of all.”
Prerna Priyadarshi, another CAT aspirant said, “when a lot of other MBA exams are being conducted online, then why not CAT. It will be easy and much safer for all of us students to take the exam from home. Many students who may be suffering from coronavirus, will also be able to take the exam if it’s conducted in remote-proctored mode.”
With the COVID-19 vaccination drive in full swing right now the government’s target of vaccination the maximum population by December end, it vaccination as mandatory criterion may not be required. It is also not feasible as India is a vast country and there could be genuine cases of candidates not being vaccinated by the CAT 2021 exam day. However, the aspirants must strive to get vaccinated before the exam as the best protection against COVID-19 is the vaccine.
CAT exam is conducted in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode at over 400 test centres in over 150 cities across India. The CAT 2021 exam is expected to be held on November 28. Official CAT 2021 notification will be released soon. The registration process for CAT exam 2021 will begin in the first week of August. It is expected that change in CAT eligibility criteria or CAT exam pattern, if any, will be commuicated in the CAT notification.
