Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Can I get admission to JNU without CUET?

A:

To get admission at Jawaharlal Nehru University, candidates must visit the official website of the University (jnu.ac.in) or NTA for course-wise admission criteria. JNU admission to most of the UG, PG and Diploma courses are based on candidates' performance in the CUET-UG & CUET-PG scores. For admission to JNU BA (Hons.) in Foreign Languages, BSc.-MSc Integrated programme in Ayurveda Biology and Certificate of Proficiency courses, JNU accepts CUET-UG. For JNU PG courses including MTech, MPH, MA, MSc, MCA and PG Diploma in Big Data, admission is based on CUET-PG scores. For JNU MBA admission 2025, CUET-PG is not valid and is dependent on CAT scores.

Q:   Is JNU better than DU?

A:

As per the NIRF 2024 rankings, JNU is ranked 2nd, while DU is ranked 6th under 'University' category. This clearly suggests that JNU is a better university overall. However, these rankings are based on a variety of factors. Furthermore, the best university for a student will depend on the individual needs and preferences. Here is the comparison of JNU and DU based on some key factors:

  • Academics: JNU is known for its strong academics and research focus. It has a number of world-renowned faculty members, and its students have gone on to achieve great things in their careers. DU is also a good university academically, but it is not as research-intensive as JNU.
  • Campus Life: JNU has a vibrant campus life with a strong student union. There are many student organizations and activities, and the university has a reputation for being a hotbed of political activism. DU also has a good campus life, but it is not as political as JNU.
  • Location: JNU is located in South Delhi, while DU is spread out across the city. This means that JNU students have a more central location, while DU students have more options when it comes to choosing a college or hostel.
  • Fees: The fees at JNU are lower than the fees at DU. This is because JNU is a central university, while DU is a state university.

Q:   Is M.Sc. at JNU a good choice?

A:
{Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

Here's what current students and alumni have to say:

Pros:

* Excellent Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified, knowledgeable, and supportive. They provide great lessons, and practical classes are helpful.
* Good Infrastructure: The university has a great campus with modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art library, laboratories, and hostel amenities.
* Placements: While the placement rate may vary across departments, some students reported getting internships and even job offers from reputed companies like D.E. Shaw, Deloitte USI, and McKinsey & Company.
* Scholarships: The university offers scholarships to deserving students.
* Campus Life: Students enjoy a lively campus culture with regular events, festivals, and sports competitions.

Cons:

* Limited Placements: Not all students get placed immediately after completing their degree, although some do secure internships.
* Old Curriculum: Some students felt that the course curriculum could be updated to include more industrial exposure.
* Hostel Conditions: Although the hostel facilities are generally good, some students mentioned that they needed improvement.
* Facilities for Research Students: Limited research opportunities and resources might affect students' ability to pursue higher degrees.

Overall Assessment: Based on the feedback from students and alumni, pursuing an M.Sc. at JNU seems like a good choice for those interested in academics, research, and networking. While the placement record may not be stellar, the university's strong reputation, excellent faculty, and vibrant campus atmosphere make it an attractive option. However, potential students should weigh these pros against the cons and consider whether JNU aligns with their individual goals and expectations.

Our college is very nice to achieve success.
Placements: In our college, M.Sc, M.A, CA and all kinds of courses are available, which charge the fee of about Rs. 30,000 per year. Many alumni of our college are in top-ranked colleges.
Infrastructure: In the mess, good quality breakfast and lunch are served. In the hostel, bubble bed facility is available, and all facilities are very nice. There was a very nice structure for studies. I was a leader in our hostel, and no one from outside will come to the hostel to disturb your study. The hostel is nice for all students, and I will suggest you to stay in it.
Faculty: All the teachers here are highly qualified in their own subject, and they are aware of the students' study and syllabus. They always motivate students, and they all are doing their jobs well. They all are highly talented and smart. They separately teach academically weak students and make them well educated.
Other: I have chosen this course as it is very nice, and it builds my career and provides me with knowledge. Our college provides scholarships to talented students. We will study hard for that, and there is a student union centre also to express our opinions.

JNU is one of the best places to study, even if the financial status of the students is low.
Placements: Approximately 87% of students got placement from last two years. The highest salary package offered was 14 LPA, the lowest salary package offered was 6 LPA and the average salary package offered was 9 LPA. Top recruiting companies are Lifesciences Pvt Ltd, Alkem India Pvt Ltd, Newyork lab Ltd. Top roles offered are professor, researcher, junior scientist, patent manager etc. The highest salary package offered was 14 LPA, the lowest salary package offered was 7 LPA and the average salary package offered was 10 LPA in our course. Nearly 95% of the students get an internship in different pharmaceutical companies and industries like Alkem, Mankind, Patanjali, Dabur etc.
Infrastructure: Our department is occupied entirely by Wi-Fi, library, labs and classrooms. The central government of India is funding the college. It's one of the cheapest institutes of country for M.Tech Biotechnology. The hostel is fantastic. The food available at the mess with a reasonable price and also maintain quality with hygiene. We also have a medical centre on campus.
Faculty: JNU has one of the best teachers in the country. They have in-depth knowledge in their respected field of works. Thee teaching quality is up to mark. The course curriculum is not only relevant, but it's the best curriculum for biotechnology. It makes every single student industry-ready.
Other: I chose this course because I completed my B.Sc in Biotechnology. Biotech let you work as a researcher and scientist. We need some more facilities regarding placement. Many events and fests take place in this college to have some quality time. Our university is a closed campus, so it is good. Extracurricular activities like sports and cultural meets are organised from time to time every year.

The college has lovely campus, excellent faculty members and good infrastructure.
Placements: Most of my seniors in the college are pursuing PhD in prestigious institutions, and some have joined JRF. Some of my seniors are applying for PhD in other countries like US, Germany, UK and Canada. One of my seniors is pursuing PhD. Currently, a placement cell is being established in the department of biotechnology.
Infrastructure: JNU has an amazing campus with free Wi-Fi facility. The campus is completely nature-friendly. It has a beautiful central library which is student friendly and remains open all the time. Labs are very good for science students. The college provides a good environment for sports as well.
Faculty: The college provides world-class faculty members in all the departments. They are very intelligent and friendly. They are well qualified, and most of them are graduate and postgraduate from foreign universities. Their teaching quality is very good. The student to faculty ratio is very good. Students also get industry exposure.
Other: The college organises annual fests and sports. The college provides debt scholarships to the students. The college also has a good environment and connectivity.

Review of JNU - Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Placements: Department of biotechnology does not have any placement cell. Most of the time, students have to go for research even if they do not want. I have seen no one who has secured a job from the campus. The university plays no role in providing internships. It is up to the student to look for the internship. Few students get paid one, and most others get an unpaid internship. The average stipend offered for the paid internship is Rs. 15,000 per month.
Infrastructure: JNU has good infrastructure. It is located in South Delhi and has a sense of calmness. Hostels and academic block are now fully Wi-Fi enabled. Classrooms are average, and the labs are decent. There is an active medical centre inside the campus with a 24x7 ready ambulance. Labs have proper funding and do active research work. The canteen food is good, but the hostel food is not good at all. Hostel rooms are on a sharing basis. In my 2 years, I did not have any problem with the infrastructure.
Faculty: The course curriculum is designed in such a way that it is very useful to get a PhD. However, if you are interested in some other field like masters, then it might not be a great option. Professors are good and have the expertise for their subjects. They all have their labs and proper funding from DST and DBT. Teaching methods include teaching on the whiteboard along with the projector. We went for an industrial visit once to Rishikesh to a factory which was making calcium tablets. It was a good experience. The whole trip was paid for by DST.

My experiences at JNU Biotechnology Department.
Placements: I will be clear on this. JNU have no placement cell that I know of and generally offers no placements to students. It being a research institute inspires students to go for Ph.D. I do not know anyone personally who has got a job straight out of university. Coming to the internship part I had an internship in the US. The professors are really helpful and they gave me a generous recommendation. My other classmates did an internship in India only. Few even decided not to go for the internship. It all depends on you.
Infrastructure: The university has pretty decent infrastructure when compared with other institutes of India. I have been to a couple of colleges abroad and compared to that we need more improvements. When I was in JNU it did not have Wi-Fi in hostels. There was a medical center for students, having an ambulance for emergencies. There is also a sports ground and a swimming pool. The mess food is horrible but canteen food is somewhat decent. The hostel rooms are on sharing basis and I was allocated an old hostel. The rooms were okay. I personally did not have any issue with JNU.
Faculty: The course is relevant and up to date. It has helped me to secure an internship in the US. Most of the professors are helpful and serious towards there job. They are keen to solve your query and mentor you. The teaching methods are digital along with proper textbook approach. The student-faculty ratio is not high and helpful for one to one interaction with the facilities. We did have an industrial visit to the starting of the first year. It was some Polio manufacturing unit in UP. The curriculum is useful and very helpful.
