JEE Main 2016 AIR 1 Topper Deepanshu Jindal is inspired by Steve Jobs: Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish speech
Deepanshu Jindal never dreamt of securing an AIR 1 in JEE Main 2016. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he first saw his JEE Main rank card which was released on the late evening of June 23. With an AIR 53 in JEE Advanced, Jindal expected to get a decent rank – in the Top 20s may be but definitely not an AIR 1 in the exam.
Son of a teacher, this Delhi lad credits his success completely to his family and teachers. He says, “My family supported me throughout my journey. My sister did not watch TV so as not to distract me from my studies. I credit my success to a lot of people including my family and my teachers”.

Aiming to get into IIT Delhi for Computer Science Engineering, Jindal is also a school topper and secured 98.6% in Class 12th Board exam. Steve Jobs’s “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish” speech at Stanford inspires him to be an entrepreneur in the future.
In an candid chat with Shiksha.com, Deepanshu Jindal, AIR 1 JEE Main 2016 Topper talks more about his preparation future plans, success mantra, his expectations from his dream institute and more.
Q. Congratulations on your achievement. How are you feeling being the JEE Main 2016 topper with an AIR 1
I am really excited like sort of stunned and in shock. I can’t believe. I am surprised I guess.
Q. Did you expect it?
No. Not at all. Not till 7 in the evening when I had seen the JEE Main 2016 result.
Q. How long have you been preparing for?
Science and mathematics were my favourite since childhood. But if you ask me about my first stint with IIT JEE preparations, I started with it two years back. Soon after starting my Class 11th.
Q. What was your preparation strategy for the exam?
I never had a study plan as such. I just concentrated on my studies without seeing the number of hours I spent studying. I couldn’t study for 12-13 hours a day for seven days a week like others do. It's not me. One should be target oriented and should stick to it. It helps. Infact, I used to take gaps after every 4-5 days. Balance between the two is very important. I handled stress and pressure from studies very calmly.
Q. Can you share your class 12th Board marks , your score in JEE Main and your rank and score in JEE Advanced?
- Class 12th Board Marks – 98.6% in boards
- JEE Main 2016 marks – 321/360 (Subject wise break up: Physics - 111, Chemistry - 100 and Mathematics – 110)
- JEE Advanced 2016 Rank – AIR 53
- JEE Advanced 2016 score – 261/372
Q. You were ranked 53 in JEE Advanced and 1st in JEE Main. How did your parents react to it?
They were really ecstatic and the feeling hasn’t yet sunk in for them as yet. They are sort of on the 7th sky or maybe higher. They actually Couldn’t believe what they heard. I am sure they are very proud of me.
Q. Which institute are you vying for and which is the course you aim to pursue?
I would be taking up Computer Science at IIT(Indian Institute of Technology) Delhi.
Q. What are your expectations from IIT Delhi?
I see it as a platform for achieving and exploring myself.
Q. Have you take any other exam/s besides JEE Main and Advanced?
Yes. I also appeared for BITSAT.
Q. Any tips for aspirants taking the exam next year?
I would like to say that:
- Always be flexible in your schedules
- Follow your heart and do what you want to do
- Live in the moment
- Manage the present and future would handle itself
Q. So, tell us something about your family?
My father - Jai Bhagwan Jindal is a tuition teacher and my mother Anita Jindal is a homemaker. My sister Ritika Jindal is in class 11 studying non-med.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
After IIT, I may take up higher studies and thereafter I will be pursuing entrepreneurship.
I wanted to do research but I have kept the final call for a later stage. If I do it then it will be for my own firm. Entrepreneurship and research will go together.
Q. Do you have a plan for your start up? Who is your inspiration for entrepreneurship?
Frankly speaking, I currently have an idea for my start up. But I hope that I would find out as I am at the verge of taking it further.
I do have loads of inspirations, many of them. However, Steve Jobs’s "Stay Hungry Stay Foolish" is my topmost inspiration.
Q. Tell us about yourself and your hobbies?
I love playing cricket and football. I do a lot of social networking.

No, IIT Delhi does not offer direct admissions to its MSc programme. The admissions are strictly entrance-based. Candidates seeking admission must apply and appear for the Joint Admission Test (IIT JAM). Once the exam results are announced, the institute releases a merit list.
