Engineering Admission 2025: Fees, Entrance Exams, Dates, Eligibility, Application, Selection
Vidhi JainContent Writer
The Engineering admission process involves both merit as well as entrance examination. Engineering is a vast field that basically deals with the application of scientific and mathematical principles to solve problems related to technology and software. Popular colleges and universities in India offer a variety of Engineering specialisations for students to choose from, including Computer Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biotechnology Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Food Technology, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and many more.
Engineering admission eligibility requires the students to have passed Class 12 in the Science background, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics subjects and scored at least 50 to 75 percent marks in the board exams. A few of the specializations may require Biology or Computer Science as one of the subjects. Some of the private colleges also offer admission on a merit basis, considering the performance in Class 12 exams; however, mostly all of the reputed colleges need candidates to appear for entrance exams and secure a decent rank in the same.
One of the most renowned and competitive Engineering entrance exams is JEE Main 2025, with more than 20 lakh student applications each year. Another extremely important entrance exam for securing admission to postgraduate courses in Engineering is GATE. Other popular Engineering entrance examinations include KCET, MHT CET, COMEDK UGET, WBJEE, VITEEE, TNEA, BITSAT, etc.
Engineering courses, amongst which BTech is the most popular are offered across all the top Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) such as IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and National Institute of Technology (NITs) like NIT Trichy, NIT Rourkela and NIT Surathkal. Other popular private institutions include VIT Vellore, BITS Pilani, Lovely Professional University, Amity University, etc. The average Engineering course fees is around INR 10 lakh.
Engineering admissions are based on top engineering entrance examinations and candidates must score a decent rank in order to secure admission in top engineering colleges. Engineering courses are offered across various levels such as Diploma, Undergraduate(BTech/BE) or Postgraduate (MTech/ME), and Doctoral (PhD).

Q. What are the steps in Engineering courses admission process?
A. The procedure for admission to engineering courses is almost the same across all top engineering colleges. The syllabus as well as the pattern is also very similar and candidates must be prepared in order to secure a seat in colleges.
- Candidates must first select which branch or specialisation do they wish to pursue under engineering.
- They must fulfil the criteria for engineering entrance examinations. They must score passing marks in Class 12th and must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Candidates must have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate in the Class 12 (or equivalent) board examination. The aggregate marks for SC, ST and PWD marks should be at least 65% in order to be eligible for entrance examinations.
- Candidates must apply for the entrance examinations by thoroughly filling the application form and must appear for the entrance examination by preparing religiously for it.
- Institutions will declare the results and based on the cut-off and rank awarded to the candidates, they will be selected for counselling process.
- The opening and closing ranks for various branches across various engineering colleges will determine whether a candidate is able to secure admission to the desired engineering college.
Q. How to prepare for Engineering Entrance Exams?
A. Candidates who are aspiring to take admissions to engineering courses must realise the growing competitiveness amongst these exams. The difficulty of questions has increased as well as the syllabus also includes logical and verbal reasoning. Therefore candidates must be well prepared by solving mock tests as well as revising the concepts of Class 11th and 12th.

- Prepare an effective time-table in order to prioritise the important subjects and cover all topics for reading as well as revisions.
- Choose Study Material wisely in order to practise questions as well as clear the basic concepts. Candidates can start with NCERTs and subsequently solve reference books such as RD Sharma for Mathematics or HC Sharma for Physics or Arihant for Chemistry.
- Revision and Mock tests to gauge one's preparation and prepare for the real-examination in order to increase one's efficiency in marking the right answers and reducing wrong attempts.
Q. What are the popular entrance exams for admission to Engineering courses?
A. Candidates must have appeared and cleared some of the top engineering entrance examinations in order to be eligible for admission to engineering courses. Some of the popular entrance exams are WBJEE, TS EAMCET, LPUNEST, BITSAT, JEE Main and others which are extremely competitive.
