NMC Opens Doors for Non-Biology Candidates to Appear for NEET-UG
The revision comes as a breakthrough for aspiring doctors, particularly for those with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as their core subjects during their 10+2 education. They are now eligible to take the NEET and pursue a career in medicine.
In a significant reform reshaping the landscape of undergraduate medical education examinations, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced an expansion in eligibility criteria for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). This landmark decision now permits candidates without Biology as a core subject to partake in NEET-UG.
The revision comes as a breakthrough for aspiring doctors, particularly for those with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) as their core subjects during their 10+2 education. They are now eligible to take the NEET and pursue a career in medicine.
Inclusivity in Medical Education: NMC's Clarification for PCM and Open School Students
The NMC's Undergraduate Medical Education Board has clarified that students specializing in PCM and those from Open Schools are now eligible for NEET-UG, following the GMER-2023 regulations. Furthermore, the Commission has taken a decisive stance to resolve all pending cases related to this matter.
Overhauling Medical Education: New NMC Regulations 2023
In response to numerous queries and ongoing legal disputes challenging the Graduate Medical Education Regulations of 1997 for MBBS course admissions, the NMC has issued a comprehensive Public Notice. The prior regulations, enforced by the erstwhile Medical Council of India, mandated a two-year study of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English during Class 11th and 12th from regular schools, effectively excluding students from Open Schools or those appearing as private candidates.
These regulations barred certain candidates from taking the NEET-UG test and led to the rejection of their applications seeking Eligibility Certificates. However, the recent NMC's Graduate Medical Education Regulations of 2023 have nullified the previous regulations retroactively, allowing candidates who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English to appear for NEET-UG.
Flexibility in Education: Revisiting Eligibility Criteria
Reflecting upon the New Education Policy, which advocates for flexibility in Class 12th subject choices, the NMC, in its meeting held on 14.06.2023, decided to reassess the approach of the erstwhile Medical Council of India. This includes permitting candidates to study the required subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology along with English) as additional subjects post their Class 12th from duly recognized boards by the concerned Government. Such candidates will now be allowed to participate in NEET-UG and subsequently be eligible for the grant of an Eligibility Certificate.
The revised decision will also apply to candidates whose previous applications for the Eligibility Certificate were rejected based on the criteria outlined in this public notice. Moreover, candidates becoming eligible after this notice's publication date will be allowed to appear in NEET-UG-2024.
Furthermore, ongoing court cases filed by MCI/NMC will be withdrawn, and the current position outlined in this public notice will be presented in all pending litigations involving candidates against MCI/NMC for swift resolution.
This revised version aims to maintain clarity and conciseness while highlighting the key points of the NMC's decision regarding NEET-UG eligibility criteria and the resolution of pending cases.
