Computing NEET 2024 marks vs rank is a tricky affair since as many as 67 candidates have got 720 out of 720, and all of them have been allotted AIR 1. Moreover, two candidates got 718 and 719 on account of grace marks given to them to compensate against the loss of time. This year, NTA has given All India Quota (AIQ) Rank to candidates on their scorecards. For all 67 AIR 1 rank holders, NTA has given their AIQ Rank in decimals, for example, 1.01, 1.02, etc. as per the NEET 2024 tie-breaking criteria

Q:   What is the exam pattern of NEET?

A:

NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test is a paper-pencil based test (PBT) of 3 hours and 20 minutes duration. There are a total of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), out of which 180 questions have to be attempted. The syllabus of the exam consists of Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects. The Biology subject is segregated between Zoology and Botany. On the other hand, Chemistry subject is segragated into Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Each subject will be divided into two sections, Section A and Section B.

Section A carries 35 questions and Section B carries 15 questions. While all 35 questions can be attempted in Section A, in Section B, 10 questions out of 15 have to be attempted. Each question carries four answer options and the correct option has to be marked on the OMR sheet. According to the marking scheme, each correct question carries 4 marks and there is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer. No marks will be awarded or deducted for unattempted or extra attempted questions. The following table brings the structure of the NEET exam.

SectionsNumber of QuestionsTotal Marks
Physics Section A & B35 + 15140 + 40
Chemistry Section A & B35 + 15140 + 40
Botany Section A & B35 + 15140 + 40
Zoology Section A & B35 + 15140 + 40

Q:   Will the NEET 2025 exam pattern change?

A:

The NEET 2025 exam pattern will be announced by NTA in the information brochure, which wll be released tentatively in the second week of February 2025. For the last two years, the exam pattern of NEET has remained the same. Hence, it is expected that the NEET 2025 exam pattern will also remain the same as last year. The NEET exam pattern had undergone changes previously in terms of structure and duration. The continuation of the same exam pattern of NEET will bring a sense of relief among students as they will not require changing their preparation strategy or look for new practice papers. Moreover, the previous years' NEET question papers would suffice for preparation and practice purposes.

Q:   Will there be negative marking in NEET?

A:

Yes, the NEET examination pattern suggests that there will be negative marking. For every incorrect answer, one mark will be deducted and 4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer. However, negative marking will not be applicable for the unattempted or extra attempted questions. Since there is a negative marking scheme for wrong answers, candidates must answer questions carefully and select the questions carefully which they are sure about the accuracy.

To know which colleges/courses one can be eligible for via NEET 2024, s/he must know the approximate ranks also. Only when one knows their NEET rank, s/he can begin researching the colleges eligible for. This stage is fairly simple, candidates can use the estimated rank to check the list of colleges in a NEET College Predictor. They can begin researching these colleges and prepare a list of pros and cons for each. This makes a choice easier for them during counselling.

NEET Score Band vs Total Number of Students

NEET is the only medical entrance test for admission to undergraduate courses in India. NEET 2023 was taken over 20,38,596 candidates out of which 11,45,976 candidates qualified. Except for those who score above 640, every candidate competes with hundreds of others for the same college/course. It is, therefore, important to know beforehand the sort of competition that one may face for a particular rank/score.

NEET 2024 has been registered by around 25 lakh candidates, and over 20 lakh candidates are expected to appear for the exam. Hence, with a higher level of competition, it is estimated that the NEET cutoff will be higher than the last year.

NEET 2024 Tie Breaker Criteria

Owing to a large number of test-takers for NEET, many candidates end up scoring the same marks in this examination. However, it is not possible to allot the desired institutes to the students if they are not ranked properly. To resolve this issue, NTA has tie-breaker criteria for NEET. These criteria help NTA allot different ranks to the candidates who have secured the same marks in NEET.

Tie-breaker Criteria for NEET:

a. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the test, followed by,

b. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Chemistry in the test, followed by,

c. Candidate obtaining higher marks/percentile score in Physics in the test, followed by,

d. Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the test,

e. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in the test, followed by

f. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Chemistry in the test, followed by

g. Candidate with less proportion of a number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in Physics in the test.

h. Application Number in ascending order.

The last factor has been added later by NTA.

Till 2022, NTA considered factors like candidates older in age and application number in descending order. These criteria have been removed for NEET 2023.
