In India, a graduation degree is considered the most suitable educational qualification to compete for the most reputed government exams. Graduation is a milestone in anyone’s educational journey. Being a graduate makes the candidate eligible for various Government exams. Though most of these exams do not ask about the subjects studied in the graduation degree but some of them ask about the questions of postgraduate level.

The candidates need to choose a specialization in the graduation degree and, based on the subject studied in the graduation, the eligibility to various government exams is decided. It would be better to classify the exams as per their sector to simplify the explanation for the exams. After graduating, the candidates become eligible for the following exams:

Civil Service Exam

These exams are called the Civil Service posts, be it the All India Service, Central Civil Service or the provincial civil services. These are the officer posts having the decision powers and highest scope of duties and responsibilities. These exams include the following.

The candidates can appear in any of the state PCS exams. The educational qualification required for all the above exams is a graduate degree from a recognised university or equivalent institution. There is no bar of percentage in the graduate degree. It implies that irrespective of the percentage of the graduate degree, the candidate can apply for the exams. This provides a level playing field for all the candidates. The age limit for the exam can be different and the candidates need to check the individual exam for more details.

Specialized Service Exam

These are the specialist service examination that requires a specific subject of study in graduation. These exams recruit candidates having specialised knowledge of the subject and hence the eligibility criteria include such subjects in the educational qualification required for the exam.

In addition to the above, the candidates are required to appear in subject-specific papers. There is no minimum percentage required to apply for the exam. All candidates having the same degree can apply irrespective of the percentage of their graduation degree.

Banking Exam

Banking Sector is one of the largest sectors that conduct the recruitment exam at the national level. There are two most common posts for which the recruitment exam is conducted. The following exams are the most important exams for the Banking Sector:

IBPS Clerk Candidates who have completed Graduation from any discipline can apply
IBPS RRB Graduate Degree from a Recognised University/institution with a minimum of 55 per cent of marks
IBPS SO Graduate Degree with specific Subjects
NABARD
  • Graduation Degree with 60 per cent (55 per cent for reserved Category candidates)
  • Graduation Degree in a specific subject such as Agriculture/Agriculture Engineering/Animal Husbandry/ Veterinary Sciences
RRB Grade B Graduation in any discipline /Equivalent technical or professional qualification with minimum 60 per cent marks (50 per cent for SC/ST/PwBD applicants).
RBI Assistant Candidates must have completed graduation from any discipline with a minimum of 50 per cent

There are some posts for which special educational qualification (specialization) is required. The banking sector can be said as the most dynamic sector because the recruited candidates have to undergo various pieces of training from time to time.

Defence Exams

Candidates who wish to join the defence forces can appear in the following exams. There are two most important exams conducted to recruit candidates for the Defence jobs

  • Candidates should have an Engineering degree in Electrical or Electronics or Telecommunication or Instrumentation or Instrumentation and Control or Electronics and Communication or Power Engineering or Power Electronics with 60 per cent marks.
DRDO CEPTUM  Graduate Degree in a Specific Subject

AFCAT Exam

Technical Ground Duty Post

  • Candidates must have completed Class 12 with 60 per cent in Physics and Mathematics and a minimum of four years degree graduation/integrated post-graduation in Engineering/ Technology from a recognised university
  • Candidates must have passed Class 12 with 60 per cent in Physics and Maths and a four-year graduation/integrated post-graduation qualification in Engineering/Technology from a recognised university or cleared sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institute of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies with minimum 60 per cent in specific subjects.

The candidates should note that there are special educational qualifications required for some posts which are above the graduate degree in engineering. They need to check each exam separately to get all the details about the educational qualification required to apply for the exam.

Group C exams

The Group C posts form the backbone of the administrative structure of India. The major workforce in the Central and State government departments are Group C employees who do the clerical work of the department. The following exams are conducted to recruit candidates for clerical positions in the Central and State Government machinery.

These exams saw fierce competition and most of the candidates could not clear the preliminary stage.

Central Armed Police Force Exams

These forces are indispensable for the internal security of the nation. These are the positions in the Central Police Forces such as CRPF, BSF, CISF and the like. The positions include the Assistant Commandant and Sub-Inspector posts.

Being conducted by the Central recruitment agency, these exams are conducted at the national level and the candidates can be posted at any place across the nation. There is no condition of minimum percentage in the graduation degree.

Police Exams

These are the state-level examination conducted by the State Police recruitment bodies. The candidates are appointed to the position of Sub-inspector through these exams. In some states, the educational qualification for the Constable exam is a graduate degree.

No minimum percentage (in graduation degree) is required to apply for the above examination. The candidates must read the official notification for the physical requirements of the exam. These exams conduct the written and the physical examination to recruit the candidates for the above positions.

Other Government Exams

The candidate who is a graduate can apply for those exams also where the required educational qualification is Matriculation or Higher Secondary provided they fulfil the age limit and other criteria. Some of these exams are given below:

There are various exams where the candidate can apply after the Graduation degree. The candidates must refer to the exam notification of each exam to understand the eligibility criteria other than the educational qualification such as the age limit and specialization required to apply for the exam. If the candidate does not confirm any of the eligibility criteria mentioned in the official notification, their candidature can be cancelled at any stage of the examination.

Q: Which Government job is best after graduation?

A: This is a very subjective question and the suitability of the job depends on the interest of the candidate. The best government jobs after graduation are the Civil Service posts where all the decision-making powers are concentrated.  Some candidates will find the defence jobs best after graduation degree other will argue about the Banking Sector jobs. Some candidates will vote for the specialised services related to the subject they have studied till their graduation. This depends on thier interest. There is no perfect answer for this question.
