  • Focus on Accuracy: The scheme incentivizes candidates to focus on answering questions they are confident about, rather than attempting all questions regardless of their understanding.
  • Fairer Competition: Negative marking can create a more level playing field by reducing the impact of lucky guesses and emphasizing genuine understanding of the subject matter.

The CUET PG negative marking scheme, while aiming to reduce guesswork and promote accuracy, also has some potential disadvantages:

  • Disadvantage for Less Confident Candidates: Candidates who are less confident or prone to making minor errors may be disproportionately penalized, even if they have a good overall understanding of the subject matter.
  • Focus on Avoiding Mistakes: The emphasis on avoiding negative marks can shift the focus from demonstrating knowledge to simply minimizing errors, potentially discouraging deeper learning and critical thinking.
  • Unfairness in Certain Situations: In some cases, negative marking may be perceived as unfair, such as when candidates are faced with ambiguous questions or unexpected twists in the exam format.
