I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University was established by an Act of the State Legislature in 1997. It was established as Punjab Technical University and renamed as I.K. Gujral Punjab Technical University by the State Government to promote degree-level studies in the state for technical, management, and pharmaceutical, etc. streams. The university has 121 AICTE and 65 UGC Institutes affiliated with it. The university has received a mandate to establish centres of excellence in emerging technologies that will promote research, development, and training.
To extend the knowledge and qualification to the students, the university has started offering several courses across streams in distance education mode. It also has learning centres for students of distance mode programmes.

IKGPTU formerly known as Punjab Technical University 25+ UG and PG level courses as the main campus. Students can pursue UG or PG-level programmes in 9+ streams. The department offers courses like BTech, BArch, BBA, BCA, BA, etc. at UG-level and MTech, MSc, MBA, and M.Arch at PG level. Students can also join lateral entry courses line BTech and BCA offered by the university. Students get to study an interactive curriculum with the practical implementation of the same.
At IKGPTU, they ensure to offer not just theoretical knowledge to the students, and students get to learn and practice at the lab and centres. IKGPTU owns 78.16 acres of land and has 10+ campuses across the state. The university's main campus offers good infra facilities to the students. It offers well-furnished classrooms, labs, and library facilities to the students. Labs at the campus are fully air-conditioned. It also has an auditorium having a seating capacity of 800 seats.
