IGNOU Highlights 2025

Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. As per the latest NIRF 2024 rankings, IGNOU ranks No. 1 under the newly introduced category 'Open Universities'.

The IGNOU admission cycles are conducted twice a year, in January and July. IGNOU History

Some of the historical facts of IGNOU are listed below:

The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO.
Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis.
In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university.
Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed.
The report also suggested various measures to be followed while formulating the instructional and management processes of the open university, which included: admission procedures, preparation of reading materials, setting up of study centres, live contact with teachers, etc.
This was followed by the release of a draft bill by the Union Government of India for the establishment of a national open university. However, due to some unforeseeable circumstances, the entire process was delayed.
In 1985, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, again formed a committee to prepare a plan of action for the establishment of the open university. Based on the report released by the committee, the Union Government passed a bill in Parliament, and on September 20, 1985, IGNOU came into existence.
Named after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the university held its first convocation in 1989 and awarded degrees to more than 1000 students.
IGNOU received full recognition from the UGC in 1992, and all the degrees awarded by the university started being recognised as equivalent to the degrees offered by other regular universities in India.
Indira Gandhi National Open University started its virtual campus in 1999, by offering its first-ever online course in Computer and Information Sciences.
Today, IGNOU stands as the world’s largest university and serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad.

The college is good if your purpose is to join distance education.

Placements: There is no such assurance of placement with IGNOU but there are many career options like that of Professor, Associate Professor and Assistant Professor. The best thing about the college is that I can pursue my graduation while I work full time. There is no such thing as internship provided by the campus, you will have to do everything on your own. The college will only provide you with the course and exam details, that's it.

Infrastructure: I can't say much about the infrastructure because it's a distance learning thing and we need not visit the campus for anything. But I have visited the campus and they have lab, library and full Wi-Fi enabled campus. The campus also has a recreational area and a very good canteen.

Faculty: I don't take classes but there are classes available on weekends and the fee can also be paid online via logging into the portals and uploading all the documents along with the online fee. The exams are difficult if you do not study, but it’s not like you will have to study everyday to get good marks. You can score about 70% by just studying at the time of the exams.

Other: I chose this course because this will add a value to my current job and it's easy to pursue it from here with a full time job. The course can be more helpful if they provide us with the study material. There is no such thing as campus life or events here as we do not go to the campus.

Review of Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Placements: It is an open university so you can get any placement here. So I would recommend that if someone wants to live a college life, they should opt for a regular college, not this one. Because here, you won't experience anything. And classes are not good as well. It is not worth it.

Infrastructure: My study centre was Ramanujan in my first year, so it was good in terms of infrastructure, canteen and others, but I don't know about hostels as I am not from a regular college. But I think there are no hostels because I did not see any there and buildings are being constructed.

Faculty: Teachers are good and one of them was a Ph.D. holder but one thing that I hate is that of the five, only 2 used to attend classes and if I talk about a course, then it is good and to the point. There is nothing extra. And exams are easy if you study PYQs and you also get marks on assignments, so it is not that difficult to pass.

Other: As it is a university, you don't get to experience real college life, so I would suggest you opt for regular college because here you just give exams and that's it. You have classes on weekends in the last 3 months before exams. I chose this because I wanted to work as cabin crew but if you don't want to work, don't choose open university.

IGNOU Scholarships 2025

IGNOU scholarships 2025 are offered to students belonging to reserved categories (SC/ST). The university also provides exemption/ reimbursement facilities time to time as per the rules of the university. Candidates can also apply for government scholarships.
