Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   Can I get admission to JNU without CUET?

A:

To get admission at Jawaharlal Nehru University, candidates must visit the official website of the University (jnu.ac.in) or NTA for course-wise admission criteria. JNU admission to most of the UG, PG and Diploma courses are based on candidates' performance in the CUET-UG & CUET-PG scores. For admission to JNU BA (Hons.) in Foreign Languages, BSc.-MSc Integrated programme in Ayurveda Biology and Certificate of Proficiency courses, JNU accepts CUET-UG. For JNU PG courses including MTech, MPH, MA, MSc, MCA and PG Diploma in Big Data, admission is based on CUET-PG scores. For JNU MBA admission 2025, CUET-PG is not valid and is dependent on CAT scores.

Q:   Is JNU better than DU?

A:

As per the NIRF 2024 rankings, JNU is ranked 2nd, while DU is ranked 6th under 'University' category. This clearly suggests that JNU is a better university overall. However, these rankings are based on a variety of factors. Furthermore, the best university for a student will depend on the individual needs and preferences. Here is the comparison of JNU and DU based on some key factors:

  • Academics: JNU is known for its strong academics and research focus. It has a number of world-renowned faculty members, and its students have gone on to achieve great things in their careers. DU is also a good university academically, but it is not as research-intensive as JNU.
  • Campus Life: JNU has a vibrant campus life with a strong student union. There are many student organizations and activities, and the university has a reputation for being a hotbed of political activism. DU also has a good campus life, but it is not as political as JNU.
  • Location: JNU is located in South Delhi, while DU is spread out across the city. This means that JNU students have a more central location, while DU students have more options when it comes to choosing a college or hostel.
  • Fees: The fees at JNU are lower than the fees at DU. This is because JNU is a central university, while DU is a state university.

Q:   What is the minimum marks for JNU admission?

A:

The educational qualification and minimum aggregate requirement varies course-wise. However, the basic eligibility remains the same i.e. Class 12 for UG and graduation for PG courses. Find below JNU eligibility criteria for top courses:

Q:   Is M.Sc. at JNU a good choice?

A:
{Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

Here's what current students and alumni have to say:

Pros:

* Excellent Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified, knowledgeable, and supportive. They provide great lessons, and practical classes are helpful.
* Good Infrastructure: The university has a great campus with modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art library, laboratories, and hostel amenities.
* Placements: While the placement rate may vary across departments, some students reported getting internships and even job offers from reputed companies like D.E. Shaw, Deloitte USI, and McKinsey & Company.
* Scholarships: The university offers scholarships to deserving students.
* Campus Life: Students enjoy a lively campus culture with regular events, festivals, and sports competitions.

Cons:

* Limited Placements: Not all students get placed immediately after completing their degree, although some do secure internships.
* Old Curriculum: Some students felt that the course curriculum could be updated to include more industrial exposure.
* Hostel Conditions: Although the hostel facilities are generally good, some students mentioned that they needed improvement.
* Facilities for Research Students: Limited research opportunities and resources might affect students' ability to pursue higher degrees.

Overall Assessment: Based on the feedback from students and alumni, pursuing an M.Sc. at JNU seems like a good choice for those interested in academics, research, and networking. While the placement record may not be stellar, the university's strong reputation, excellent faculty, and vibrant campus atmosphere make it an attractive option. However, potential students should weigh these pros against the cons and consider whether JNU aligns with their individual goals and expectations.

I am satisfied with our course.
Placements: Our university does not have a placement cell, so students need to be in touch with senior batchmates. They will provide you with jobs. You can also search for jobs online. If you have a good command of languages, you can get placed easily. Many seniors got placed in our college. Some students went to foreign to complete their higher studies.
Infrastructure: On campus, some hostels are well-maintained, but some of the hostels are very old because it is an old university. The infrastructure of the library is the best. The library and classrooms are well-maintained. Especially for girls, our campus is the most the safest place. You can easily move on campus at night without fear.
Faculty: Faculty members are highly qualified, so you don't need to worry about them. Most of them have done their higher studies in foreign universities. They are helpful. If you need any type of help, you can take help from them. A few professors are very strict related to their academics, but some of them are good in favor of students.
Other: It is one of the most prestigious universities in India. It is very different from other central universities. In M.A. and B.A. you will get MCM scholarships of Rs. 20,00 per month. Our college provides scholarships to students whose family income is less than Rs. 2,50,000 per annum. You can easily pay your hostel mess fee through scholarships. The mess fee is around Rs. 3,000- 3,500 per month. The tuition fee is Rs. 10,000 per month. The campus is surrounded by greenery.

Great night life with good faculty, facilities, and hostel.
Placements: This university was very famous and because of the benefits you will get. Many companies came for direct placement like amazon, flipkart, paytm, Gurgaon mnc, etc. There were many companies who took all the students into their companies. The most important thing was that we were not even graduated. We were in the final year of graduation. Those who sat in the placement cell, got selected.
Infrastructure: The hostel was messy and they were very old. The boys' hostels were not good but the girls' hostels were good. Our central building and our classrooms were good. The hostel was not so good but okay. Compare to DU, JNU was far better in food. The central library was very good. It had air-conditioners for summer and a heater for winter. It also had a cyber library and there were 9 floors from which you can find book of your own interest and can borrow it. In hostels, you will be provided with Wi-Fi and also in the central library. Everywhere at JNU, you would find Wi-Fi. You can use Wi-Fi only by student specific id which will be provided to you, when you get selected.
Faculty: Faculty members were good. Teachers were very intellectual because they were the same teachers who take interviews of RAW ( research and analysis wing ) agents. They also make IAS papers. There were sessional exams. They conducted 3 (sessional) + 1 ( semester ) = 6 months you have to have only in 2 sessional. It is your choice if you pass in two sessionals and you don't want to give 3 sessionals, that's totally fine. There is nothing wrong with it. Exams were easy, in language, you must study every day, that's the important thing. You don't have to study for long hours but you have to study daily even 2 hours is sufficient.
Other: This course is very good. That's about our academy. But if you come to JNU then you will explore many things and your intellect will increase. You will be mature. You will see many things on campus. Till now what you haven't seen, JNU's nightlife is very great. The best part is in Delhi you can't say that this area is secure but in JNU, it is fully safe even at night time. A girl can't go for walk alone and at JNU, even at 2 am you will find the girl going for walk alone. That's the best part.

The college provides great exposure to the political world.
Placements: There are 100% placements in college. Companies like Amazon do visit the campus for placements, and the average CTC offered was 6 lacs per annum. Many other companies also visit the campus. There is an active placement cell on the campus, and it gives a lot of exposure. You will get to learn about jobs in foreign nations as well as embassies.
Infrastructure: The college has a huge infrastructure. There are lots of buildings along with well-equipped classrooms. There is a medical centre which is totally free. There are big ground and courts for sports like basketball, football, and badminton. Hostel rooms are nice, and there are no restrictions on in and out timings at all.
Faculty: All the faculty members have great experience, and they are all from JNU itself. It is very hard to get through the faculty exams. The faculty resides on the campus, so they are available 24*7. They are very friendly and never force you to do anything, and besides that, they will help you.
Other: You can study at a very low cost at this college.

The cheapest education you get in India.
Placements: I got a placement in medical tourism. Although it is not a permanent job, I am being paid a handsome amount. Since it is a new language, there are a lot of opportunities. Students are also getting placements in Facebook, etc. We are also given building-related jobs.
Infrastructure: Jawaharlal Nehru University has a very good infrastructure. The college is connected with a pakka/vistar road. It has four entertainment points all located on the main road, and the whole campus has e-Rishksaw arranged by the administration itself.
Faculty: Faculty members are very helpful and cooperative. Their friendly behaviour helps the students to get their doubts cleared instantly. We can meet our faculty members at any time as they also reside on the campus. The course structure is student friendly which provides the students to explore their course each semester.
Other: Teachers were very helpful. Each department has some Indian as well as foreign faculty members. This helps the students to get a detailed study of the language and culture we are studying in a splendid manner. Our faculty members have PhD degrees in their respective fields. So they are well known to the ways on how a teacher can grasp the students' interest in an easy manner. They use both theoretical as well practical teaching methods. Faculty to student ratio in my department was 1:5.
