Best for academics, not professional.
Placements: It was never a job oriented course. It was a rich learning experience. There is no placement cell. This is not a professional course. But it is good for those who look towards academics as a career option. Almost all of us are placed in good universities now across India from centers of geography to population, development studies etc.
Infrastructure: The infrastructure is way better than most of other universities. It is a residential campus, we hardly used to go out of campus for anything we required. The central Library of JNU has nine floors and has ample books. There were two field trips 15 days each during our course. The canteens served really diverse and good food.
Faculty: The faculty at CSRD is amazing. There are about 30 teachers. Almost all of them have great command at their subjects. The course is interdisciplinary in nature. They have term papers which are great learning experience. The continuous evaluation works well. There is no system of attendance.
Other: The night life at campus is fabulous with a rich political cupture.

I am blessed to be a part of ths prestigious institution.
Placements: This is a research-based institution, and the students mostly get jobs in the private sector. One of the recruiters was Azim Premji Foundation, primarily operates in Rajasthan and recruit educational functionaries at a district level. Another organization that came for placements was PRADAN. According to my friends who were shortlisted by this organization, didn’t intend to join it as the job required relocation to Rajasthan, starting with the basic salary of Rs. 20,000. There are companies which frequently visit the campus and hires the students of language courses for the role of the interpreter which has a huge scope and market.
Infrastructure: I will describe the infrastructure of CSRD primarily from of a student point of view. The classrooms are well-equipped with computer facilities, and each centre has its own departmental library. The Wi-Fi connection encompasses the domain of hostel also, and it’s very effective making it easy to download research-oriented journals. The JNU admin has paved the way for the students and for teachers, as well to download high-quality research works published in journals like Springer, Elsevier, Economic and Political weekly with just a click. There is a myriad of books available in the library, filled with old and new books, all catering to the needs of thirsty research scholars. The library remains open throughout the day and there is seating room for the students which is air-conditioned providing respite to the students from the scorching heat of the sun mainly during summer. There is Sports Complex (near Aravalli Guest House) which ensures the sporting spirit of the athletes in the campus is maintained. There is a Health Centre where the physicians deal with minor situations and if they are not able to deal with any health-related issue of students, the latter is referred to the nearest Government hospital like Safdarjung Hospital or AIIMS with free ambulance service.
Faculty: I will illustrate this parameter too from the point of view of the students of CSRD. The centre has well-qualified professors who are trained to teach us the two most important branch of geography- the physical and the social geography. To be precise, the social aspect is more emphasised in the department since the centre involves studies of regional development. During our studies, we focused precisely on the differentiation that is around us and as to how geography plays a pivotal role. There are mandatory two trips every year for the Master's students. During my tenure in college, we went to Himachal Pradesh as part of our physical geography course to study the landforms and had another trip to Uttarakhand, in which we did an extensive survey on Social Geography aspects. The teaching in JNU (from my viewpoint of CSRD mainly), is not conventional unlike most of the other universities which follow certain pattern of a book. The teachings in the class were related with the mundane life around us. Paper formations at first seemed like something beyond my knowledge but with further reading of the journals, the term papers became a treat. We were instructed to do the primary surveys and then form our own primary survey. Software were taught extensively to deal with large-scale data like STATA and to evaluate our performance there would a power point presentation where every student had to explain as to what they researched and what are their findings. The department taught me to question the subjectivity and to look at every aspect from a critical point of view which also included constructive criticism.
Other: There are a total of 18 hostels in the campus and each hostel holds its hostel night every year during winter. These nights are arranged with pomp and vigour. Also, there is North-Eastern programme held every year which displays the culture and the ongoing issued of the north-eastern states. Every festival is recognised in JNU whether it is Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja to Lohri, etc. The International Food Festival is held every year where students get to taste the delicious international cuisine. The campus life is lively especially the night time where half of the students are on the road roaming freely after the hectic work in the day, and the campus also ensures safety for girls who have to walk from library to the hostel during midnight. It is during the midnight that one can see people having ‘chain’ at Ganga Dhaba. General body meeting is usually held in any hostel where the students are interacting either with any renowned politician like Shashi Tharoor or with the Economists like Atul Sood. There are scholarships for those people who are not financially privileged and the money ensures the sustenance of those students in the campus.

Here is jannat of academic environment.
Placements: There is no placement cell in jnu for social Science students though language student can get placement in the multinational companies. Basically it is research based university hence most of the student prefer for M.Phil and Ph.D. Many student get foreign university scholarship on the basis of grade or research work, thesis. It is one of the best university for the research in india basically in the field of social Science. It is not only focus on the academic but over all development of student through various activity, field trip, survey, dissertation etc.
Infrastructure: Infrastructure is really awesome the well furnished classes room. Each center have their own library apart from central library which is one of the largest library in india. It have all the report planning commission as well as all fine year planning documents. The Hostel are very good and every student will get hostel.24x7 electricity and water available. The most important thing is the aesthetic beauty of nature and blue buck available in the campus which is natural this made unique. You can roam around in the Campus in any hour of the day without any security issue.
Faculty: Faculty members are well qualified the are very experienced and very interactive. Most of them treat us as friend you will feel free to talk them anything even about your personal life. The academic environment is so good that in the midnight you can find them in the academic block and most important you can ask anything to them, they will never deny you.

Students also asked

Q:   Can I get admission to JNU without CUET?

A:

To get admission at Jawaharlal Nehru University, candidates must visit the official website of the University (jnu.ac.in) or NTA for course-wise admission criteria. JNU admission to most of the UG, PG and Diploma courses are based on candidates' performance in the CUET-UG & CUET-PG scores. For admission to JNU BA (Hons.) in Foreign Languages, BSc.-MSc Integrated programme in Ayurveda Biology and Certificate of Proficiency courses, JNU accepts CUET-UG. For JNU PG courses including MTech, MPH, MA, MSc, MCA and PG Diploma in Big Data, admission is based on CUET-PG scores. For JNU MBA admission 2025, CUET-PG is not valid and is dependent on CAT scores.

Q:   Is JNU better than DU?

A:

As per the NIRF 2024 rankings, JNU is ranked 2nd, while DU is ranked 6th under 'University' category. This clearly suggests that JNU is a better university overall. However, these rankings are based on a variety of factors. Furthermore, the best university for a student will depend on the individual needs and preferences. Here is the comparison of JNU and DU based on some key factors:

  • Academics: JNU is known for its strong academics and research focus. It has a number of world-renowned faculty members, and its students have gone on to achieve great things in their careers. DU is also a good university academically, but it is not as research-intensive as JNU.
  • Campus Life: JNU has a vibrant campus life with a strong student union. There are many student organizations and activities, and the university has a reputation for being a hotbed of political activism. DU also has a good campus life, but it is not as political as JNU.
  • Location: JNU is located in South Delhi, while DU is spread out across the city. This means that JNU students have a more central location, while DU students have more options when it comes to choosing a college or hostel.
  • Fees: The fees at JNU are lower than the fees at DU. This is because JNU is a central university, while DU is a state university.

A:
{Source: M.Sc. students & alumni}

Here's what current students and alumni have to say:

Pros:

* Excellent Faculty: Teachers are highly qualified, knowledgeable, and supportive. They provide great lessons, and practical classes are helpful.
* Good Infrastructure: The university has a great campus with modern facilities, including a state-of-the-art library, laboratories, and hostel amenities.
* Placements: While the placement rate may vary across departments, some students reported getting internships and even job offers from reputed companies like D.E. Shaw, Deloitte USI, and McKinsey & Company.
* Scholarships: The university offers scholarships to deserving students.
* Campus Life: Students enjoy a lively campus culture with regular events, festivals, and sports competitions.

Cons:

* Limited Placements: Not all students get placed immediately after completing their degree, although some do secure internships.
* Old Curriculum: Some students felt that the course curriculum could be updated to include more industrial exposure.
* Hostel Conditions: Although the hostel facilities are generally good, some students mentioned that they needed improvement.
* Facilities for Research Students: Limited research opportunities and resources might affect students' ability to pursue higher degrees.

Overall Assessment: Based on the feedback from students and alumni, pursuing an M.Sc. at JNU seems like a good choice for those interested in academics, research, and networking. While the placement record may not be stellar, the university's strong reputation, excellent faculty, and vibrant campus atmosphere make it an attractive option. However, potential students should weigh these pros against the cons and consider whether JNU aligns with their individual goals and expectations.

Can I do MA geography through correspondence? No, you can't. Geography is practical-based and if you don't have it in your Bachelor's degree then you can't pursue Master's degree. There will be an MA degree in Geography firstly and of course, you can.
