The university was established in 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, as one of the eight new IITs.     The hostel fee at IIT Bhubaneswar is INR 99,892 for the general category. There are four halls of residence, one for girls and three for boys. These halls of residence together can house about 2000 students. All these hostels have dining facilities for all residents, providing four meals a day (breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner). In addition to that, canteens and cafeterias are inside the hostel or at different places within the campus. A number of recreational, sports, literary, and social activities take place in the hostel during the academic year.
