GATE Admission 2023

GATE Admissions 2023: With around 8 lakh test-takers in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) last year, the exam is the most popular one conducted for admission to various postgraduate courses offered by IITs, NITs, IIITs and other institutes/universities across India. The exam is also the gateway to engineering jobs in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

There has been a consistent rising trend amongst PSU’s to recruit students to have a valid score in the exam. From 7 to 10 PSU’s in the beginning, around 70 – 80 PSU’s accept the GATE score as on date. In addition to that, foreign universities in Singapore namely, National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and two universities in Germany – the Technical University of Munich and RWTH Aachen University also consider the GATE percentile valid for admission to their research-based programmes. Other than the PSUs and government institutes, many private engineering colleges and universities also accept the GATE score for admission to their master’s programme.

About GATE

Either of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) conduct the exam every year on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Government of India.

GATE is basically conducted to judge the comprehensive understanding of candidates in various undergraduate subjects such as Engineering, Technology, Architecture, and postgraduate level subjects in Science. In 2023, IIT Kharagpur will conduct the exam for 29 subjects (also referred to as “papers”) on February 5, 6, 12, and 13, at over 221 cities in India.

Q:   How to calculate GATE 2025 Score?

A:

The exam authority will calculate the GATE score by considering the raw marks secured by candidates in the GATE 2025 result. The raw marks, or actual marks, will be allotted to the candidates after evaluating the answers. The GATE score for the multi-session exam will be calculated by converting the raw marks into the normalised marks for that particular subject. The raw marks will be used for calculating the GATE score based on the qualifying marks. The scorecard will be available to qualified candidates only. Candidates should keep the soft copy of the GATE scorecard safe for future use. To check the GATE 2025 result, candidates need their enrollment ID/email ID, and password. The exam conducting authority will prepare the GATE 2025 result on the basis of the performance of the candidates in the exam Check for more detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.

Q:   What are the rules for CCMT seat allocation?

A:
The merit list for seal allocation will be prepared based on the GATE scores. There may be some cases where two or more candidates score the same marks; in such cases, the following will be considered: - In the case of the same year's GATE qualification, preference will be given to the candidate who has scored higher GATE marks out of 100. - If GATE marks are out of 100 and the year of passing GATE for two candidates is the same, then preference will be based on the All India Rank (AIR). - If the marks out of 100, years of passing the GATE and AIR are the same, then the Date of Birth will be considered. The elder candidate will be given preference. - If even the Date of Birth is the same, then the rank will be decided on the basis of random number generation. - Seat allotment is based on the Merit list and availability of seats as per filled Choices according to the Government of India (GoI) Reservation norms. Filling GATE 2023 application

GATE application is an online process that includes steps such as registration, filling the online application form, uploading the required documents, and payment of application fee. GATE 2023 application process will be available from August 30 to September 30, 2022, without a late fee and till October 7 with a late fee. Take a look at the GATE 2023 registration process below:

Step-1: Register on the GOAPS website

To begin with, aspirants have to register themselves on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) website by providing a valid email address, mobile number, and password. After completing the registration, candidates’ enrollment ids sent to their registered mail id. Candidates were advised to choose a password that’s hard to guess.

Q:   Is the use of a physical calculator allowed during the GATE 2024 examination?

A:
No, a physical calculator is not allowed during the GATE examination. Candidates will be provided with a virtual scientific calculator during the online GATE 2024 examination. It can be used to answer the questions. Also, mobile phones, physical calculators, wristwatches, or any other electronic items are not permitted inside the examination hall. Therefore, it is important for a candidate to know how to use the GATE virtual calculator provided in the GATE exam. Candidates should practice well before the exam to minimise calculation errors and reach the results quickly. About GATE Calculator It is a specially designed virtual calculator that is provided during the GATE examination to help candidates with their complex calculations. As we know, the GATE exam contains complex calculations and lengthy decimals up to three points and numerical values, which becomes a bit problematic for students to calculate on time because there is limited time available for students in the GATE exam. Tips and Tricks of using the GATE Calculator - Candidates should be aware of the components and operations of the virtual calculator. - Use brackets as much as possible. - Check already-placed operands to save time. - At the start of a new calculation, always press (C). - Answers should not be in fractions. Therefore, students are advised to get the correct answers up to the required decimal places.

Q:   Will I be able to download my GATE 2025 scorecard after December 31, 2025?

A:

No, candidates will not be able to download the GATE scorecard after December 31, 2025. The scorecard will be available for download from March 28 to May 31 free of cost. After May 31 till December 31, 2025, candidates will need to pay INR 500 for downloading the scorecard. It is thus advised that candidates download their GATE scorecard within May 31 and save/take print of the scorcard.

Q:   What if the power/Internet connection failed during online payment for GATE 2024?

A:
Candidates will be required to log in again whenever they can get back online to check their payment status on the GOAPS website. If the payment is received, candidates can print their application form. If the payment was not received by GATE then he or she can also check the status of the transaction from the bank account. If the fee amount has been debited from his or her bank account but GOAPS does not acknowledge any fee payment, then the money will be credited back to their account. However, this may take a week or more after the closure of the application process. In such a situation, a candidate may initiate a fresh payment on GOAPS without waiting for the money to be credited back to the account. This will ensure that the application submission will be on time (within the deadline). Read More for detailed information: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-application-form.

Q:   What is the GATE 2025 normalization procedure?

A:

Normalization is basically done for the exams, that are conducted in multiple sessions. It depends on various factors, such as the difficulty levels of the question papers across the multiple sessions into account. Or we can say that the scores obtained by the students are then normalized based on the mean and standard deviation of the raw scores in their respective sessions. This will help to account for any variations in the difficulty level of the different Sets of question papers. It also ensures a fair evaluation of the candidate's performance. The GATE result of a qualified candidate indicates both the GATE score and the marks obtained by the candidate. Check how GATE normalized scores are calculated. Institutions conducting GATE use formulas for converting the marks of candidates into scores. As some papers are conducted in multiple sessions, to arrive at a normalized score for these multiple sessions, a suitable normalization formula is applied. The normalization is done on the basis of the fundamental assumption, which is that "in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions". This assumption is justified since the number of candidates giving multi-session papers in GATE is large. Also, the procedure for allocating sessions to candidates is random. In addition, it is also ensured that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same magnitude. Therefore, the GATE normalized marks calculator is used to calculate the GATE normalized score. Further, read in detail: https://www.shiksha.com/engineering/gate-exam-results.

Participate in GATE 2023 Counselling

The exam conducting body of GATE does not organise any centralized counselling process for MTech admissions. Candidates seeking admission into the IITs, IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs have to participate in different counselling depending on their ranks and choice stream/institute. State and private universities offering MTech admission through GATE have their separate counselling process.

GATE 2023 Counselling schedule will be released in the first week of April. Qualified candidates of the exam have to participate in the counselling procedure conducted by two separate bodies for admission to an institute. A brief about the same is as below:

  1. COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal): COAP conducts counselling for admission to IITs.
  2. CCMT (Centralised Counselling for MTech): CCMT will conduct counselling for admission to MTech programs offered by NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and CFTIs.

Students should note that state and private universities will conduct their own counselling based on GATE scores.

COAP is not an application portal for MTech admission at IITs. Candidates have to register online for COAP and separately for the respective institute based on their preference.

Documents Required for Counselling

Students will be required to bring the following documents for the document verification process during reporting at RC:

  • Provisional seat allotment letter.
  • Self-Attested Copy of GATE Score Card (2020 or 2022 or 2023)
  • Photo ID proof.
  • Original Birth certificate issued by competent authority/Class X (High School) Board Certificate as proof of date of birth.
  • Class 12 marks sheet.
  • Marks sheet of qualifying examination (all semesters).
  • Degree/Provisional Certificate
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Three Passport size coloured photograph
  • Seat acceptance fee proof
  • Printout of the Registration form & locked choices
  • Migration Certificate
  • Transfer Certificate
  • Original Conduct Certificate from the Head of the institution last attended
  • An original Course completion certificate from the Head of the University/Institute in case result is awaited
  • One set of self-attested photocopy of all the original documents

In the past few years, GATE has been providing the best study and career opportunities for technical graduates. Pursuing a Master’s from the best engineering institutes of the country or a job in PSU give students a head start before even entering any industry. The exam provides its qualified candidates with an upper edge over the working professionals who have seen marginal growth even after years of experience in the industry. Every aspirant of GATE needs to work hard and realise their dream through it.
