FMGE exam commonly known as the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) 2025 exam is conducted and organized by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The exam is conducted biannually in computer-based mode, generally in July and December. The FMGE December 2025 session exam official dates have not been released this year and will be updated once it is out. The FMGE registration process 2025 might be started tentatively in April 2025.

The medical licensing exam is prevalent among post-graduate medical practitioners who have earned international degrees and wish to practice in India. Several candidates have doubts about the number of attempts/limits allowed on the FMGE exam. With NBEMS conducting the exam every year, this question has gained traction among the aspirants who have not been able to earn a medical license to practice medicine in India. How Many Attempts Are Allowed for the FMGE Exam?

There is no limit on the number of attempts a candidate can take to appear for the FMGE exam. NBEMS allows candidates to avail the medical license if they wish to practice medicine profession in India. Therefore, there is no limit or restriction on the FMGE attempts allowed for candidates.

Q:   How many marks are required to qualify FMGE licensing exam?

A:

The qualifying marks according to the FMGE exam pattern are 50% or more. Candidates need to score 150 marks or more to qualify FMGE 2024 exam. FMGE exam will be conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). 

Q:   Can I send someone else on my behalf to collect my FMGE Pass Certificate?

A:

No, it is mandatory for the candidate to be present when the Pass Certificate is being issued. In the absence of the candidate, the authorities will not issue the Certificate.

Q:   How many attempts are permitted in FMGE?

A:
There are no restrictions on the number of attempts. If a candidate is unable to clear the examinations in June session, he/she can reappear in the December session. Qualifying the exam is mandatory criteria for those who have completed primary medical education outside India. They have to qualify the exam to practice in India. Candidates have to register online and submit application form for FMGE exam.

However, in case a candidate has cleared the exam and has received the medical license, then the candidate will not be allowed to appear for the exam. The FMGE license stands valid for a lifetime and aspirants need to repeatedly appear for the exam to avail it.

Who is Eligible to Apply for the FMGE exam?

Find out the FMGE exam eligibility criteria to appear for the exam:

  1. The candidate must be an Indian national or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI). Only such candidates are eligible to apply for the FMGE exam.
  2. Interested aspirants should possess a primary medical qualification, which is confirmed by the Indian Embassy concerned. In addition, the candidates will have to submit proof of primary medical qualification. If someone fails to submit the required documents within the stipulated time, he will not be considered eligible for the FMGE exam.
  3. The candidate should have obtained an ‘Eligibility Certificate’ from the National Medical Commission (or the erstwhile Medical Council of India).
  4. The result of the final examination for primary medical qualification will be declared online. 

FMGE Exam – Exceptions for Candidates

A candidate seeking provisional or permanent registration in India shall not have to qualify for the Screening Test if he/she holds an Under Graduate medical qualification from Australia/Canada/New Zealand/United Kingdom/United States of America and the holder thereof has also been awarded a Post Graduate medical qualification in Australia/ Canada/New Zealand/ United Kingdom/United States of America and has been recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in that country.

NBEMS has the exclusive right to set and change the FMGE exam pattern. For the FMGE December 2025 exam, the exam pattern has remained the same. Find out the FMGE 2025 exam pattern to understand the exam well:

Q:   Can I appear for FMGE exam in Hindi language or any other regional language?

A:

No, FMGE exam is conducted only in English medium. Candidate cannot appear for the FMGE exam in any other regional language. Unlike other competitive exams, there is no other medium of language introduced on this entrance exam. 

Q:   Can I appear for FMGE 2024 from any location?

A:

No. Candidates have to appear for the exam from the list of centre chosen by candidates while applying for the exam. The candidate will have to take the test on a pre-assigned computer at a designated FMGE 2024 test centre. A candidate can choose the option for test centre while filling details in the application form for FMGE exam. NBE will release the list of exam cities along with the official information brochure. Registration is mandatory to submit FMGE application form. Dates for FMGE 2024 will be notified soon by NBE.

Q:   What will be the total marks for FMGE 2024 June session?

A:

FMGE 2024 question paper will be of 300 marks. There will be 300 questions in the examination, each question will have a weightage of 1 mark. To attempt each section, 2 hour and 30 minutes will be allotted.  The question paper will be divided into two parts, comprising 150 questions each.

Q:   Can I pursue a master's degree from India if I don't clear FMGE?

A:
No, it is mandatory to clear FMGE if you have completed your undergraduate medical degree programme from outside India. However, candidates with an undergraduate medical degree from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States of America or the United Kingdom, are exempted from FMGE. They need not to appear for FMGE exam for pursuing Masters in medical field. Candidates have to apply on the official website, NBE. Edu. In to register and submit application for the exam.

About the Exam

FMGE December 2025 exam will be conducted in online mode (computer-based format). The medium of the examination will be English. No other language is allowed in which candidates can appear for the exam. Candidates will be evaluated based on 300 multiple-choice questions (Objective-type questions). There will be two shifts of the FMGE exam which will be held in a single day of 2 hours and 30 minutes each. Candidates can switch between the sections to attempt the questions. There is no sectional time limit to appear for the exam.

FMGE Marking Scheme

According to the FMGE exam pattern, all the questions in the FMGE question paper will have equal weightage. One mark will be awarded for every correct answer. No marks will be awarded/ deducted for incorrect answers. The examination will be conducted in two phases – Part A and Part B of 2 hours and 30 minutes each.

FMGE Pass Percentile

According to the FMGE guidelines which are released by NBEMS, a candidate needs to score at least 50% marks in the examination to qualify for the FMGE exam. Only those candidates will be entitled to get an FMGE certificate who pass the exam by securing the minimum qualifying marks.

There is no limit on number of attempts for a student. Any applicant can appear for the FMGE exam as many times as they want. However, it should be kept in mind that once a candidate qualifies for this exam, he or she cannot appear for it again.

The cutoff marks are the minimum marks which applicants need to secure to pass the exam. There are various factors which determine the cutoff marks of FMGE exam. Since FMGE exam is conducted for a total of 300 marks hence applicants need to secure the minimum passing marks.
